This is what the English 'countryside', as seen from a train, looks like. Because it's green, I guess things look good. But look how empty of wildlife it is. Not a single bird visible. Not one. Massive swathes of our 'countryside' are just devoid of animals.

It's #Aquilolamna day. A remarkable, long-'winged', probable lamniform shark from the Late Cretaceous of Mexico. Described by Vullo et al. in Science, it seemingly filled a manta-like niche. Woah! Paper: (art Oscar Sanisidro) #sharks #FossilFriday #fossils

Ok, this. #Pelicans (shown in 2 of the photos here) practise 'glottis exposure': they invert the pouch and stretch it over the neck and chest. This isn't about overheating but is used to stretch and rearrange tissues of the lower jaw and throat (fig from Schreiber 1977). cont --

Yes, it's time another #TetZoocryptomegathread . In previous megathreads, I've covered several #LochNessMonster photos, including Hugh Gray's from 1933, Peter O'Connor's of 1960, and the Shiels 'muppet' of 1977. Time for another one!
