This is what the English 'countryside', as seen from a train, looks like. Because it's green, I guess things look good. But look how empty of wildlife it is. Not a single bird visible. Not one. Massive swathes of our 'countryside' are just devoid of animals.
We are in a time of unprecedented ecological crisis. Animals large and small are declining everywhere. It is time to make small sacrifices to help the natural world survive and thrive. If you're lucky enough to own some garden space, here's a thread on things you can do help...
"Horror moment eel bursts its way out of heron's throat while it's flying away" Yeah, headline (from Daily Star) speaks for itself. Photos are from Maryland. Heron survived. Photos Mr Sam Davis.

image is doing the rounds on social media. It's a fabulous painting from legendary Italian artist Gino D'Achille and (among other works) appeared in Daniel Farson's 1975 book Vampires, Zombies & Monster Men. It has an interesting backstory (thread) ...
Finally able to announce that I'm part of the team behind the new
@AppleTVPlus
series
#PrehistoricPlanet
, to be released May 23rd. Finally, a series that portrays
#dinosaurs
and their contemporaries in keeping with our understanding. LOTS more news to come!
Tyrannosaurine tyrannosaurs of
#PrehistoricPlanet
. The number of decisions we made in designing our look for these two animals would surprise you. They were tweaked and revised and modified -a lot- and every detail was the source of extensive discussion.
Let’s look at another famous ‘mystery animal’ image. This time the 'de Loys ape' photo of 1920(ish), taken in the Catatumbo River basin of
#Venezuela
. You surely know the photo already. But do you know its complicated backstory? Join me as we explore it in this loooong thread…
This is amazing if you haven't seen it already: Palmer & Packer's article 'Giraffe bed and breakfast: Camera traps reveal Tanzanian yellow-billed

roosting on their large mammalian hosts'. New to me, even though published 2018...

OK, hello and let's go as I
#livetweet
during a watch of ep 1 of
#PrehistoricPlanet
! I'll try and keep everything in the same thread. This is the COASTS ep - 1 of 5 - that will be streaming one a day on
@AppleTVPlus
... Here we go!
Breaking news I've seen on Facebook and Insta: Coyote Peterson is claiming to have discovered the skull of a non-human primate in British Columbia. Is talking about this as if it's for real...
For
#FossilFriday
, check out the images of this amazing
#Pleistocene
griffon
#vulture
, entombed in an Italian pyroclastic deposit, and preserved as a space in the block. Iurino et al. (2014) scanned the block and were able to reconstruct the animal in 3D!!

More..
For
#PrehistoricPlanet
, we agreed on the presence of lips (like those of lizards) on
#dinosaurs
like
#Trex
. But the new study out today implies that we didn't go far enough, since it seems that the lips were -even more- extensive!
The incredible and heartbreaking fire at the National Museum at Rio de Janeiro means that there's a call to collect photo taken there. Mail them to thg.museu

At long long long last, it’s time to embark once more on a
#PrehistoricPlanet
megathread, focusing on the science-based decisions we made when putting the series together. Better late than never, I guess. Here, we’re looking at season 2, and this time at episode 2: Swamps…
I've just been looking at Big Sara, the privately owned

skeleton (genuine fossil, not a cast) currently on show at Westquay Shopping Centre,

. What a spectacular specimen! Here are some thoughts...

It's official -- we're about done on putting the art and text together for MESOZOIC ART, a grand new

, edited by myself and
@sharkbitesteve
, featuring wonderful new visions of ancient life by a long list of excellent modern artists
Welcome to another thread on the science behind the new
@AppleTVPlus
@bbcstudios
series
#PrehistoricPlanet
, specifically EP 4: ICE WORLDS. This thread will work best if you read the tweets as you watch the episode in real time – do this if you can…
There's lots of speculation about the contents of
#PrehistoricPlanet
series 2. You're most definitely NOT going to be disappointed. Bigger and better, more and different animals. And as I've said in books and articles, the Cretaceous was not a "dinosaurs only theme park" :)
Time for a
#TetZoocryptomegathread
! This time we look at one of the most famous sea monster accounts: the WWI incident in which the crew of the U-boat U-28 witnessed a gigantic, crocodile-shaped monster get blasted out of the water by an explosion. Yes, you read that right…
If you use or generate AI art in fields like

Here’s a thread on another famous/infamous bit of modern
#monster
lore… the so-called Muppet
#LochNessMonster
photo, taken on 21st May 1977 by Mr Tony Shiels. As usual, it has a really fun backstory, follow me as we explore it in this thread…
I've just received the most extraordinary new book on

and for dinosaurs in pop-culture. It's in Korean! But follow this thread for images (a short video coming later too).

Google 'puma' and all results are footwear. Google 'amazon' and all results are the giant company. Other examples too. I know I'm biased, but I hate this. A part of nature deficit disorder.

can swim and dive really well, and forage for prey a few metres below the water's surface. They keep their eyes open while doing this. This is a screengrab from a video sequence showing a captive animal.

The seal died. Every day, you see dog owners let their dogs run amok in places where there's wildlife. The dogs do whatever the hell they like. I'd really like to see this brought to an end.

This poor seal was attacked by a dog near Teddington thankfully some brave passers by managed to get it off before it killed it. One of rescuers needed stitches, the seal is now at wildlife rescue centre. The owner of dog walked off, please report to police if you know them
A package from Mexico arrived today. I'm pleased to say that I now have the excellent swimming T. rex from

The
#AllYesterdays
hippo is doing the rounds again. There are CAVEATS to this idea that are usually missed. The monstrous reconstructions are meant to apply to HYPOTHETICAL cases where those doing the reconstruction are unaware of soft tissue data and ignorant of mammal anatomy.
Over recent days, palaeoartist Emily Willoughby has been accused of being associated with race science and its attendant political positions. For that reason I cannot, from hereon, have any association with Emily or her work. I will not be engaging in discussion on this matter.
Your regular reminder that the

currently known as Otodus megalodon - vernacularly as

Time for another
#TetZoocryptomegathread
, in which we examine the backstory to a photo or film said to depict a cryptid, or monster. This time, we’re not looking at a photo claimed to be of a live animal BUT at photos which depict a very dead one: a rotted carcass, in fact…

Be a better person and stop hating on

Not ashamed to say I screen-grabbed this tweet, shared it, printed it out, framed it, and hung it on the wall. The reaction from the community is _exactly_ what I hoped for.
#PrehistoricPlanet
The overwhelming love and support as well as complete lack of complaint for Prehistoric Planet just goes to show that paleo accuracy is something that future media should strive for rather than sticking to outdated and uncreative depictions of paleofauna
Time to embark on another of my

PHOTO MEGA-THREADS (from hereon,
#TetZoocryptomegathread
). Today: Rilla Martin’s 1964 Ozenkadnook tiger photo, aka the ‘Rilla critter’ photo, from western Victoria, Australia. It's one of my favourite mystery animal photos. Ok...
Part of me does think that

It's

At this point I've discussed a lot of palaeontology stuff with Sir David Attenborough. He told me that - while prepping for his role in Jurassic Park - his brother Richard asked him "what are these people _like_?" Sir David had got to know lots of palaeontologists by then...
Ok, this.
