Today is my last day at id Software.
I'll always deeply treasure my time here and the lifelong friendships that have come with it. The last eight years have been a literal dream come true; I'm excited to experience all their future games as a fan.

This is absolutely fucking hilarious. Jerry Keehan is a level designer at id ( awesome guy and someone I really enjoyed working with ). One of his catch phrases was an excited "Mmmm boy!" and the occasional jokey (fake) "brrrrt"
I was walking with Andrew Hulshult back to his car and he stumbled in the parking garage and dropped guitar picks like rings in sonic the hedgehog. Not exaggerating.

Equal parts fun and complicated to code and animate. A tiny detail I always appreciate is when visible ammo on the weapon is representative of how much is in your inventory so I put that in too.
If you aren't playing indie games you're missing some of the coolest, goofiest, sincerest, most ridiculous, most heartfelt, most fun games being made period.
Pro-tip: For PVE shooters with a reload mechanic, make the last bullet in a player's magazine deal double or triple damage. Will subtly increase those tense moments where they feel like they barely scraped by.

5 years ago we were running the live action TV spot for DOOM( 2016 )! Caught it at one of my favorite bars. Gave me goosebumps at the time. Awesome memory, miss that place.

I remember playing our first levels in my early days at the studio and wondering how to reload. Then I realized you just... didn't. After years of playing realistic shooters that blew my mind and convinced me this game would be special.
Innumerable times I'd need help with a bug or a feature and who did I turn to? A more senior programmer? Na man, I'd hit up QA. They did amazing work on this game.

Doom VFR released 5 years ago! We had a tiny team simultaneously building the game and kicking out event demos every 3 - 6 months. It was extremely challenging but such a great opportunity for ownership, such a formative growing experience for me. will always be proud of this one

Wanted something with a super high fire rate so took a first pass at an SMG. 90ms firing interval.
I read a great piece of advice a while ago for prototyping gameplay: Do it with the sound off. Great sound effects can cover up shortcomings in gamefeel. If your features feel impactful and effective without sound then the audio is going to take it to the next level.
