Iโm extremely pleased to share that I successfully defended my PhD today!!!

Also, Iโm home! ๐ฟ๐ผ
11 years ago, I left ๐ฟ๐ผ to pursue higher education abroad. 3 countries ๐จ๐พ ๐ณ๐ฑ ๐ฑ๐บ and 3 degrees later, it felt amazing to celebrate how far Iโve come with my family โค๏ธ Really donโt take any of this for granted ๐ฅน
Deepest sigh.
No visa appointments until April, conference is in March. These are the barriers that affect the participation of people from certain countries from fully participating in all aspects of academia, specifically attending conferences.
Awarded my first travel fellowship for a conference! ๐๐ฅณ
โฆ..now, i just have to try and get a US visa in time to actually attend in person, wish me luck ๐ค๐ฝ๐ฅฒ
Sometimes I think about how surreal my life has turned out. Growing up in Zimbabwe and Botswana, I never though at 25 I would be pursuing a PhD, doing cutting edge neuroscience research in Luxembourg. Donโt let anyone tell you your dreams are not valid โค๏ธ
I just plotted some data in R using ggplot2 and even though itโs a super basic boxplot I made it really pretty and itโs my first time doing it on my own and Iโm really proud of myself ๐ฅบ
This year, Iโve finished my PhD, been to ๐ฟ๐ผ and seen my family after 4 years, moved to London, started a really exciting postdoc, and seen Beyoncรฉ and its only May ๐ญ๐ฅน๐๐ซถ๐พ
What a life ๐ฅน๐ค
Just started teaching myself to program in R (with the help of a really motivating postdoc in the lab). Any resources you recommend for someone with zero programming experience or advice that could be helpful?
@AcademicChatter
Officially 1 year since I defended my PhD, which is insane (how has it been a year already ๐), but in retrospect, so much has happened since then. Grateful for how far I have come since and I am genuinely excited for whatโs to come ๐ค

Every so often when Iโm in the lab I have these sudden moments where Iโm like wow, Iโm really a scientist. Today it happened while I was in cell culture and it just registered that I was pretty much โmakingโ neural stem cells. Wild.
Weirdest part of wet lab work is randomly adding colorless liquids to tubes for hours on end with no indication that anything at all is happening, spinning the tubes a bunch of times and hoping at the end you have a new colorless liquid with DNA/protein/etc ๐

Fun fact: Africa is a CONTINENT (shock! awe! ๐ง๐คญ) with 54 very diverse countries and over a billion actual multidimensional human beings.
Who wouldโve thought?
๐๐
My first time truly seeing African women scientists was 2 years ago, at 25, when I started my PhD and got active on Sci Twitter. Before that I literally had no one to look up to who looked like me/had a similar background to me. Made the imposter syndrome too real. I hope 1/n
For my PhD Iโm working with cell lines from Parkinsonโs patients with mutations in the gene that encodes alpha-synuclein. One of my goals is to understand the consequences of these mutations on the molecular level and how that contributes to disease progression
#BlackInGenetics
Missed my official PhD graduation ceremony today, mostly because I just didnโt have the bandwidth to do visas to Luxembourg after having done a visa to the UK a few months ago. While Iโm okay with it, I often think about how visa barriers just add an extraโฆ burden.
More good news ๐ค๐จ Super excited to share that I will be joining Prof Karen Duffโs lab

Very proud and happy to share my first, first author paper published in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience! ๐ฅณ๐ฅณ We used midbrain organoids to model familial Parkinsonโs, showing dopaminergic neuron loss, a-synuclein pathology + astrosenescence ๐ง ๐ฌ
4 years, a pandemic, a lot of life and a PhD later, I am finally going to see my family. What a journey. Luxembourg was more than I couldโve dreamed of. Leaving feeling content and proud af. I did that.
Not all introverts are shy. Some of us can be quite social/talkative/outgoing. But, after a certain amount of socializing, we need to spend time alone and look inward to recharge our mental batteries. ๐
