Been home for an hour, wife calls that 2 foxes were cojoined in a paddock up from our house as she drove past
.223 did a quick job from ~80m
Hopefully our chooks will get some respite now, no baby foxes from these two.
Hats off to volunteer FFs and farmer responders in putting out a stubble fire within the hour north of Bute.
Trundling back from Pt Broughton, saw smoke, pulled over, saw tractor & bin in the path. Bit of a sprint but got the jigger out of the way with flames up my arse.
After 30+ years of trouble free angle-grinder use, I had blade disintegration issue yesterday
I consider myself to be quite safe with tool use, but end of the day laziness saw me not secure work piece good enough
Lots of stitches later, I'm OK, kids quite amused by my bandage
Pretty proud of my Dad, Max as he starts his 59th harvest today. Still a valuable member of the team & his knowledge of red machines is extensive.
Striking the first blow on their new farm 'Citadela' in the Cockaleechie Hills on Southern Eyre Peninsula.
Stoked to have won Ag Innovation award at
@SA_CAAwards
last night for fire danger index alerting at harvest time. Thanks to
@PrimeSuper
&
@CommBank
for prize & regional community support of the systems I've put in place. Loving being involved in Ag industry
Done&Dusted. Lost a footy GF today, threw my boots in the bin
Feel blessed & fortunate to play 306 games for 4 great footy clubs
Many memories, many mates, many stories. Such value playing team sport, been huge part of my life
Sad, but glad to have had the opportunity to play
After 19years, this is my last trial plot to harvest.
Full time focus on Ag Tech monitoring with my Agbyte business.
10 utes, 960,000kms done for the ~34,000 trial plots in that time.
Loved it, thanks to many LMK colleagues and numerous other Ag industry people I've come across
Update on my Vic road trip this week.
Installed my 600th weather station site! When I started Agbyte in '09, I was still working at Landmark (Nutrien) as a research Agro, never thought it would grow into what it is today. Also recently installed my 500th dryland Soil Moisture
Got to give the cameraman credit from the local paper. Agbyte sponsorship logo on the ball in a nice spot.
Oh, and the young fella I'm rucking against, gave him credit too for letting an old fella win this tap
Wow-wee. After hearing about it for a few months, finally have seen my Bro's new Optiseed bar by InnovateAg
Totally in awe of the engineering design, so robust & clever. Still working out some bugs this week, but hopefully, his months of research will pay off
Had my 1st experience giving evidence at parliamentary hearing yesterday into SA Fire & Emergency services bill.
Great opportunity to discus the positive practice change that Fire Danger Index alerting has seen & how this empowers regional communities.

@LPearson15
Off to play in my 20th season of footy for the Pasky magpies. Our eldest chicken pulls the boots on too and the youngest playing together in the netters. Local clubs are so important for rural communities.
@sarahinthesen8
Sarah, as a proud South Aussie, I am too all for no coal & reduced carbon output
That to me = nuclear. You would have my vote if Greens used commonsense & supported nuclear
Qld farmers should be able to grow sustainable & profitable cotton with the water they're entitled to
Been a month since I was thru the Upper North of SA, some of the driest cropping areas. I post these photos so others are aware of the plight of those who won't get a harvest this year.
Faba beans around Laura, 500mm Ave annual region, 30cm high at best.
Wheat near Caltowie,
Took 2 days longer than I'd hoped, but have completed converting car LP gas tank into bullet smoker, mounted ontop of Metters oven.
Sick of cutting, grinding, welding, painting, but hopefully it works well & I don't need to modify.
Some Tommy Ruff fish are first to go in
Thread 1/-. Garden/orchard day, nice spot to be in warm summer weather
I get asked a fair bit about our food production methods, so though I'd explain a bit here
Currently have 12 veges growing, many that as a kid I would have thought disgusting, but have learned to love
Crop conditions & prospects have gone to shizer in a fair proportion of SA's Mid North & elsewhere.
Please Lord, may that rain band thicken up and slow down.
Dropping in to the family farm whilst on Eyre Pen. Always a treat to see harvest underway.
Two new
@seed_terminator
's are smashing ryegrass to dust. They've done grain loss tray counts this arvo, around 1% at 30T/hr.
Great technology in action
Headed to Eyre Pen yesterday, caught up with my brother & his team, nearly 2000ha's in. Rolling the dice in very dry conditions.
2nd yr with Optiseed bar, have done fair bit of rijigging air hoses, really happy with how it's performing. JD tractor been remapped to 630HP making
After years of dreaming, we are a step closer to being 'off-the-grid-self-sustainable-tree-hugging-doobie-smokin-hippies'
13.5kW solar and LG battery comissioned yesterday.
Awesome ability to monitor with Solar Edge app.
Happy to help out if anyone else is considering the same
I think I have come across Australia's roughest boom spray vehicle. Tank in the back (with herbicides containers), garden hose delivery system, front mounted boom. Made me twitch a bit
Fire-fighting hose hint. Use heavy duty - glue filled heatshrink on end of hose over joiner. Helps with hose stability and stops sharp edges of hoseclamps on fingers.
Ahh, a wet Saturday in our food production orchard. Got the in-laws staying tonight, gives me great pleasure to cook straight from our garden.
I keep ticking the boxes to be their favourite son-in-law....I'm their only one, so I guess that's a given.
Did a quick trip to Vic yesterday for some
#WeatherStation
and
#SoilMoistureProbe
installation.
Bought my swag to keep away from people, got bogged last night near Inglewood (after 90mm in Friday)
Took self isolation to a new level.....me and 4000 frogs
So had a thrill on Sunday arvo with wheel studs busting off at 110km/hr on Lincoln HWY half way between Cowell/Whyalla. Managed to work it to the side of the road easily enough. Had wife & 2 kids on board after my niece's 21st, so woke them up with a start.
I have to wear it, I
Home yesterday after a 2 week backpacking trip thru Japan with family.
A truly wonderful experience; we chose to get some:
-big city sights (Osaka)
-historic Japan (Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara)
-hiking in the alpine region (Hakuba)
-Seaside fishing & diving (Toba)
Awesome food
In my hand is result of 2yr journey to develop a 4G modem module to replace the 3G Telit H24 modem used in 1000's of telemetry devices since early 2000's
The Adcon telemetry units I've used up until 2019 for my weather stations would otherwise be redundant in July this year when
All set up at my ol' stomping ground, Immanuel College for their careers expo. 25 years ago, whilst learning to brew Ouzo from anniseed essence, smokin doobies & "studying hard" I would've never thought I'd be back to inspire the next batch of Ag Techies.
And that's number 100, my 100th weather station install this year.
In those 96 days:
-90 soil moisture probes installed
-120 site maintenance visits
-5ร to Vic, 1ร to WA
-22,000kms driven
Big thanks to the On Farm Connectivity Program for assisting uptake of AUS AgTech. Pretty
Quick sneaky trip over to Eyre Peninsula this morning, 50+mm across the Sth in past few days. Crossing the Todd river, kinda didn't expect it to be that deep....to busy filming & not reading the adjacent depth gauge
Yorke Peninsula footy leauge to cancel our senior season for 2020.
Sharpening our focus on our underage kids by facilitating a shortened comp for them starting Aug 1st.
Interesting year to take on the preso role, appreciate our club delegates input &
@SANFL
support
Early morning start over to Eyre Peninsula for some weather station maintenance & installs.
Plenty of feral goats on Nth EP, took my .223 and skinning knife. I'm a fan of goat curries, so now have some free-range, organic, carbon negative meat for my next cook up.
Headed along to the Immanuel College careers pathway expo last night in an attempt to guide some young-un's down the AgTech path.
Not sure that mentioning driving 1500kms each week is a great way to spruik the concept, but just keeping it real.
Had a few queries regarding our espaliered orchard setup, so here goes
@chriswalsh008
Netted over wire stringers on CCA posts, peak ~3m high
About 25 x 20m footprint
New lean-to shed on RHS will house aquaponics
700!
Put in my 700th monitoring site this week.
Presented at
@GRDCSouth

@HartFieldDay
'Maximise coverage, minimise loss' workshops yesterday; as a celebration of the milestone offered a Field Monitor mobile weather station as a door prize.
Excellent event, happy
Headed over to Eyre Peninsula yesterday. Got to installing a weather station at the Tumby Bay airport for the community.
Has been lots if waiting on sth EP for moisture to come down, but finally good enuf to go. A blessing to spend a bit of time with my Dad, Bro & their team as
A nice surprise to my 6am start. Found a Twany frogmouth owl on
@srkehancock_sam
weather station site. It's partner was nearby. They are pretty elusive animals, so a treat to see them.
Not the best decision to camp out in my swag last night as it got down to 0ยฐC.
Early start shows spectacular fog movements as cold air drains into the Yeelanna valley.
Some frost impacts likely on grain crops (as were my feet first up)
@HoolyMcg
Hoolz, could argue your initial Tweet was 'schoolboy' behaviour. Those that attended the awards night, were taken aback by Albo's attemp at humour. Then he apparently didn't even stay, so attendees had minimal chance to react. Why do you think all attendees should have reacted
Spent a few days in Vic last week installing
#weatherstation
sites. Replaced a few BCG Taggle units.
A good demo of why cheap plastic wind sensors are crap, failing after ~4yrs. Non-replaceable bearings = throwaway
Poor wind speed & direction leads to poor decision making
Thrilled to be able to celebrate a 20yr A grade & 10yr B grade footy premiership reunion last night at Paskeville FC. Excellent turnout of team mates, very fortunate to have majority still living somewhat locally.
Two bits of good news. 1, fortunately this girls mummy is not on Twitter and 2, I've found myself a useful helper next time I put up a Temp/humidity sensor on a 10m tower
Challenge is on. Have loaded up with weather sensors, telemetry units & soil moisture probes, headed to Vic and embarking on installing 19 sites - all part of Fed Gov On Farm Connectivity Program offering 50% rebate on hardware & service costs.
Also upgrading some 10m inversion
So this stuff excites me & why I find soil probe data so valuable.
~100mm rain in Dec, soaked to 110cm. Self sown canola germinates (Mininera, Vic).
Look at diurnal stepping down thru profile which indicates root depth.
Roots active at 105cm ~60days after germinating. Wow
Had a
#WeatherStation
site get burnt near Yorktown on Wed
Replaced raingauge, solar panel, T/RH screen, windvane tail, some cabling, junction box
All sensors & telemetry still worked. At times, I get a bit of flak about expense of my units, but quality pays
And to compliment the Coppers keg fire bucket, I've now finished restoring a Metters wood oven
~100 YO, in good condition, drilled out all the spot welds and riverted it back
Needed to weld some cast parts too, but should serve me well
Now to learn tricks of heating the oven
Head down, bum up installing 12 weather station & soil moisture probe sites across the Wimmera in past few days for the On Farm Connectivity Program providing 50% rebate on AgTech gear.
Early starts are beautiful at times, sunrise near Stawell this morn.
Recent rain caused
A 2 day trip to beautiful Eyre Peninsula. Crops looking huge allover. Pretty sure lentils at Ceduna will out-yield some near my home at Paskeville (land worth 3ร as much)
Wet on Sth EP, nice to see lots of canola, reckon there will be some high 3's for T/ha yield
We'll call it a 'working holiday'. Managed to install 9 weather stations on Eyre Peninsula on my way to Venus Bay for our annual family trip. Meg & kids came a couple days later as did my parents-IL.
Trusty AOR camper trailer & tinnie served us well once again.
@woolworths
@SaysEmmaField
I really hope you do pass this onto your procurement team. Lentils grown in AUS are amongst the best in the world, a quick chat to any pulse marketer will confirm. They can be traceable and providence guaranteed. I would have thought many of your customers would want that
Was a good time had spending Christmas with family back at Yeelanna.
Also enjoyable to be able to drive the harvester for the first time in about 15 years.
10 days of fine weather so they can knock it on the head please.
@EatmoreWeetbix
@Wilkschag
This fortnight is one of those periods where our food production goes to extreme
Goldmine nectarine, Flamecrest peach, passionfruit, tomatoes, cueys, spring onions & table grapes
Stewing & preserving a fair bit this weekend. Feeling blessed to be able to grow such things
In the past 5 months, we've had a crack at a reasonably large landscaping project at the front of our house yard which has been undeveloped pretty well since we renovated the house in 2012-14.
It slopes to the lowest point on our block, so wanted to put in a dam
That took longer than planned.
Built 10ร portable Field Monitor weather stations for monitoring trial plot sites.
Rain gauge + Temp/RH for dew point, delta T & frost severity index + still camera taking an image twice a day of the growing plants.....just need some rain to
So this chunky bit of skin was on my shoulder yesterday.
Had annual skin check 2weeks ago, Doc did biopsy on a patch that was identified a yr ago as 'one to watch'
Multi focal basal cell carcinoma was result, so back in to have 10cent size removed.
Get your skin checked
And in some extra exciting news, I finally have a rain gauge that has (nearly) cracked 20mm in a day!
Southern Eyre Peninsula getting some of the good stuff
Life moves to another stage for our family, saw the eldest off for a 2 month trip to Germany as part of her 'gap year'. Pretty bold taking off on her own at 18, but I guess that's kinda our fault for instilling a sense of adventure.
Hope the 5 words of German she knows can get
In my happy place. Cooking Matson Pork Box (Yorke Peninsula) crumbed schnitty pork steaks, roast pumpkin & veg in the Metters wood oven for the family. 30 degree May day, if it's not raining, it might as well be good living weather
Have returned home after 1750kms since 5am yesterday. Thru to Bordertown, Pinnaroo, Tailem, Burra, Terowie (swaged by railway), Yunta, Curnamona, Orroroo, Pt Augusta, Mambray 4 site maintenance.
Lots of green in upper North. A beautiful countryside we have.
Always thrilled when I get asked to put in a Soil Moisture Probe in sheetrock limestone country, this one near Curramulka on Sth Yorke peninsula.
15 pilot holes on this site before I got thru to 130cm, still a long way short of my 38 pilot hole record (only 10kms from here)
Federal government On Farm Connectivity Program is now open. Provides 50% rebate for Ag Tech hardware.
Agbyte is one of the providers for weather station & soil moisture probes. If you are in Vic or SA and are interested, please get in touch. 1st in, 1st served, so get your
A few milestones.
Had Dmax 1yr today, 78,000kms smashing down dirt roads. Love it, tough & comfy.
Recently installed 500th monitoring site (11yrs). Koonibba-Elmore, KI-APY lands, got it covered.
+ve Covid on Sat, quite shit Sun/Mon, better since Wed. Very happy I'm 3x Vax'd.
So I was the silly muppet that won the SARDI Terrior wine research tender to put in 72 soil moisture probe access tubes. Not the hardware supply, just the labour. At least the scenery is nice........
Hooray and celebrations. Have just swapped my last 3G modem module to 4G in all my older Adcon telemetry units - 305 in all.
Using the 4G modem
@PorosityAg
& I developed, it's been a long slog from Esperance (WA) to Wilmington (SA) to Elmore (Vic). Done before my Aug 31 deadline
Has been a few months since I was last in SA's Upper North region. Sth Flinders ranges is one of my favourite spots, lovely to be back.
Installing weather & environmental monitoring sites under the imposing Mt Remarkable.
A place where dryland cropping transitions to pastoral.
1.6m
#SoilMoistureProbe
install at Arthurton, Yorke Peninsula, SA. I guess the ease of auger penetration is an indication as to why this land is valued at $12,500+/ha. Prime dirt indeed
My latest Agbyte Adventure has been installing some weather stations in Ngarrara country south of Fitzroy Crossing. Data to be used for cultural controlled burning & feral pest control. Prett big journey bringing 3x weather stations on the flight, but managed to get them built ok
Have 3 helpers with me today working on
#WeatherStation
maintenance. They've been thru my ute into suncream, bandaids, pocket knife, loose change, Aerogaurd and all the food I bought. All by 11am. Might be a long day
Best rain forecast for quite a few weeks.......really keen on booking a wet August in or I might need to manually enter in rainfall figures to my weather station sites to keep clients happy!
Close to crazy busy May. Nearly done with On Farm Connectivity Program installations, 120 sites done, 20 to go.
Only have 80 more telemetry units to upgrade 3G > 4G, has been many late nights & swagging out.
Off on Agbyte's biggest adventure yet, heading to places that are as
Finally got to install 10m air Temp tower for inversion monitoring on the family farm.
Should make quantifying inversion conditions and therefore spray decisions easier
@Wilkschag
@EatmoreWeetbix
@spraydriftgirl
Ahhh, if one is patient enough, lost tools have a knack of showing up.
Couldn't find my
@BahcoTools
shifting spanner for over 5 years.
Established I lost it at this weather station site back in 2017, been back annually, but not noticed it until now. Hope it polishes up ok
On the tailend of laying 3800 clay brick pavers for the planned aquaculture shed.
Compacted dolomite sand is a wonderful base and reasonably parallel concrete plinth footings making it easy to keep square.
After a week away on
#EyrePeninsula
& 100mm of rain, was pretty excited to check out our orchard production
Goldmine Nectarine snapping branches
Hydroponic cueys swinging in the breeze
Loaded with tomatoes Inc heirloom Var; Green Zebra, Wapsipinicon Peach & Tigerella
Paskevill FC and NC wind up presentation dinner tonight. Privileged to be able to take my smashing wife out and about. Can't wait to get my hands on the B grade leading gaol kicker award after my stunning 12 goals.
4th night away in Vic installing weather stations & soil moisture probes, at my furtherest East site @ Runnymede. In the swag tonight, got offered to stay on the farm where I'm installing a site tomorrow morn, they have a hot outdoor shower, full moon, happy as a pig in mud.
Quickest trip To KI ever.
Caught 6am ferry over (4am start) & now on 11:30am back. Fixed 2 weather station sites with helper No2. Beautiful flay conditions on the water although sheep smells are making Euro tourists turn their noses up!
March = 8200kms in Dmax visiting 112 weather station sites, a new record
Worked on 3G > 4G transition for my IoT devices, general maintenance & few new installs as well
Progressing with intuitive spatial display platform to take user experience of these ~450 sites to next level
I'm fortunate in my AgTech career, I've chosen hardware that's usually robust, can be maintained & upgraded. These
@Sentek
EnviroSCAN probes are 12YO.
Updating from 3G to 4G CAT M1 modem.
I've deployed only 4G telemetry since '19, but have 300+ 3G units installed prior to that.
Spent the day around the Upper North of SA installing soil moisture probes. Beautiful part of SA.
Mt Remarkable so pretty in the morn sun.
An old weir gate on Willochra creek.
This region is long way short of annual rainfall, plenty of paddocks not yet germinated
Did my final 2019 site install
#WeatherStation
and
#SoilMoistureProbe
under lucerne pivots at Jamestown
Biggest year ever for Agbyte for site installs & kms travelled (70,000)
Thanks to customers & suppliers for support & patience. May your Christmas be blessed & enjoyable
