Amour (2012, Haneke)
"I despise films that have a political agenda. Their intent is always to manipulate, to convince the viewer of their respective ideologies. Ideologies, however, are artistically uninteresting."
--- Michael Haneke
Garland was forced into a sexual exploitative industry by her abusive parents. The blame isn't on her.
Blackface was unfortunately common practice at the time, and it's strange an exploited girl periodically gets heat for it but not all the different white men of the time.

People misinterpret what we mean when we say we want more sexy movies & think we mean we want more sex in movies.
Nope - Challengers proves that a movie can be supremely sexy without having any real sex in it. Foreplay & two sexy people lusting for each other is often sexier!
I think what's interesting about studying films like Birth of a Nation, Olympia, The Most Beautiful, etc. is not how their form "succeeds" in spite of their politics and more how their form is intrinsically linked to their politics and historical and cultural contexts.
You're tasked with teaching a course in film history. You have fourteen feature films to show the class to cover the most ground possible, what will you choose? Be realistic.
My daughter, about two years ago, was using a chest binder. We didn't know about it. She was using a male name at school, we didn't know about it. When she began cutting and hiding out in her room more, we were concerned.
When we finally confronted her, she was on the edge of

Nobody Gets Zack Snyder โ WATCHMEN (2009) Critique | Style is Substance
Nearly all adopted assumptions about the "correct way" to represent queerness on screen are rooted in liberal assimilationism and therefore must be analyzed and criticized accordingly.
The word "zombie" is used as a metaphor in the song, just as the visual likenesses of "zombies" are used as metaphors in the film. It's not rocket science.
Zack Snyder's entire career and mindset can be summarized by him deciding he needed a song for Army of the Dead with the word "Zombie" in it, and thus picked "Zombie" by The Cranberries, a song that five seconds of googling would have told him is not, in fact, about zombies
People rightfully throw shade at Doug Walker's video, but I don't see a fundamental difference between it and YMS' approach to media criticism, save for the latter's occasional effort at actual analysis. Perhaps it's a more charming type of cynicism mixed with a hint of taste?
People say things like "all you need to make a film is a camera and an idea" but do they actually mean it?
So many standards for quality filmmaking are rooted in classism and formalism. It's about time to do away with that. Shoot more shit on your cellphones. Emancipate cinema.
EXCLUSIVE: Vincent Gallo made sexual and explicit comments to women during auditions that were so shocking and upsetting, it caused two of the women to report the actor to SAG.
"I want you to believe you will die," the actor allegedly said.

I've thought about this flashback quite a bit. It's still from the victim's perspective. She looks back at her sexuality with a nostalgic longing until it was stripped away from her. Similar shots are echoed later on when her daughter liberates herself sexually.

"It's a cultural revolution, it is very socialist, very equalitarian. Pirates are granting the masses access to films. Pirates are bringing films into people's homes. ... pirates are challenging the status quo by doing what they do: they are fighting the system." โ Lav Diaz
People also paint it as Garland playing a Black stereotype. This is only partially trueโ she's playing a character who dons blackface in a play. Make of that what you will.
The fourteen year old "bitch" later grew up to be a Civil Rights activist in the 1960s.
Except it almost suggests culture has grown past its homophobia, and transphobia is only a recent phenomenon. They still say all these things about gays too. They said these things about trans then.
The Degeneracy video bluntly highlights many issues that have subtly plagued Cinema Cartography for years. They're calling for conservative resistance to postmodernism under the guise of leftism.

It's worth noting that whenever people post dumb "enlightened centrist" bullshit like this they always say "pro-Palestinian" and not "pro-Palestine." Likewise, they always say "pro-Israel" and not "pro-Israeli." It's easy to determine where sensibilities lie.
I wish lost media obsessives were more interested in finding and preserving lost silent films instead of SpongeBob chocolate milk commercials or whatever.

florence pugh being nude in oppenheimer added nothing to the plotโฆ films can be brilliant without using graphic nudity to add nothing but shock factor
Hunter Schafer liked a bad post almost a year ago and clarified she didn't agree with all of it and supports non-binary people. When she was 17, she even said she wanted to explore the non-binary part of her. She hasn't said anything transmedicalist before or since.

I don't think so. I think the point behind Deckard possibly being a replicant is that the lines between human and replicant are arbitrarily designated. I think the theatrical cut hints at this just about as much.
I have doubts AI will catch up with real art in any sort of competitive sense, but mainly because the people who push for and cheer it on tend to possess no artistic bones in their bodies.
It's fine to look at history with anger and criticism. It sucks that racism and exploitation overshadow even the more seemingly innocent corners of Hollywood. Garland gets singled out because she was a female icon of the era. Meanwhile, SNL used blackface as recent as the 2010s.

You're acting like hate speech should be tolerated from 27-year-olds. She says she's always supported the rights of everyone and people should be held accountable.
I don't see an issue with having content warnings before films. We've dealt with them on television for decades. The problem with the MPA isn't taking notice of content, but how homophobia and puritanism dictates what's acceptable for audiences to see.
Channels with "subs" in their name can't comment on videos (not even their own) without being auto-deleted within 20 sec. This includes my channel โ Style is Substance.

It is weird to see this circulate every few months like clockwork as if it's breaking news when I've known about it for eight years. What is anyone really supposed to say?
@goodneptune
Well, "abolish" has such definitive meaning and advocating to abolish something is arguing to destroy something for everyone, regardless of their experiences.
"Normalize not coming out" would be better.
There is so much moralistic criticism directed at Salรฒ, or the 120 Days of Sodom by zoomers who googled "most disturbing films" and yet next to nobody ever brings up Pasolini's use of underage actors.
People abbreviate LGBTQIA+ all the time, but with right wing groups campaigning specifically to drop the T from LGBT and thereby alienate transgender people from the community (a tactful rhetorical attack on the community as a whole), it's frankly questionable to just say "LGB."

I get the sentiment but I don't quite agree on a rhetorical level (currently?) I think sex and gender are different, even if there's not an objective, all-encompassing definition for either. Better argument imo would be to move away from gendering sex which seems to be the issue.
The perpetuation of Snyder derangement syndrome based on clickbait headlines.
He was talking about director's chairs... the ones he'd be sitting in. His worst crime here is that hat.
I can't imagine teaching Birth of a Nation or Triumph of the Will in a film class without the lesson relating directly to the aesthetic pursuit of evil and/or reflection of the evils of US and German history. Personally I find it insightful.
EMMA SELIGMAN IS THE FIRST CELEBRITY (to my knowledge lmk if i missed any) TO DENOUNCE THIS LETTER SHE WAS IN. she was seen at Palestinian protests earlier in the week and sheโs advocated for us in the past. so it makes sense, lets pray more celebrities come to their senses
For God's sake, stop saying "gender critical" to describe transphobes. They don't think critically. Also, nobody is more critical of gender than trans people.
Imagine sitting next to Ben Shapiro in a theater as he angrily scoffs at the screen and to prove his masculinity and mask the fact his gay ass enjoys it.
My producers dragged me to see โBarbieโ and it was one of the most woke movies I have ever seen. My full review of this flaming garbage heap of a film will be out on my YouTube channel tomorrow at 10am ET.
Cis people should be able to make trans films tbh. If it's done with sincerity, they're critically and artistically engaging with the fluidity of gender/sexuality and questioning the paradigms.
We just don't need transphobic hacks like Taika Waititi telling the stories.
Transphobes getting red with anger over Kristen Stewart being vaguely fluid with her gender expression. These folk really want to gatekeep what women can be despite saying the contrary.
Most kids in the States play M rated video games, and so many of those should be T.
Stop being so puritanical about movie ratings. Teenagers can handle a lot.
@goodneptune
I take it you're basically just trying to say people shouldn't feel obligated to disclose their sexuality? The assumption that one is straight unless they come out is heteronormative. You're pushing against that.
I get what you mean but that's not quite what's communicated.
Since weโre talking Auteur Theory, letโs talk about how it often erases the contributions of women. Have you heard of Mellisa Mathison? You should considering she contributed to many of your childhoods, helping write Indiana Jones and ET, and more.
In my opinion, the issue with extra long video essays isn't so much their length (there's long prose after all), but rather the fact they tend to be so much summary and so little actual analysis.

I recognize maybe 10 of 500 people on that Glazer hate list. The few who stick out include Amy Pascal, Michael Rapaport, and Tara Strong. These three I mainly know about due to their racism outside of this.
