Do you think authors should put warnings on their books to notify potential readers that the story may contain subject matter that can trigger negative emotions or memories?
Eg: abuse, neglect, suicide, etc?
And if you're a writer, have you ever included such warnings?
Is there a motivational quote you read or recite often to help you get through the day?
Eg:
"This too shall pass."
"Nothing is impossible."
If so, please share it; there are many who could use a bit of strength or inspiration to help them get through their day.
You're a struggling, unknown author.
A politician you despise - with millions of followers - reads your work and loves it.
S/he invites you to speak at one of their campaign events about your journey as a writer.
Would get your name out there and increase sales.
Do you accept?
Would you sell your current, unpublished work-in-progress to a famous author for $10,000?
You must not disclose to anyone that it is your draft.
No one will know it was your story.
The author will get all credit when book is published, along with all royalties.
Do you?
An influential person reads your book, loves it, but requests you change a specific aspect in your story because it upsets them.
You politely decline.
S/he calls you insensitive.
This person’s fans begin to boycott you, hurting sales.
Do you now change your book to appease?
What do you think when authors state:
"I don't write my stories, my characters do."
Or
"My characters create themselves, I don't."
Is a fascinating direction given that the author creates the characters, their traits, actions, beliefs, story plot and direction, etc.
When you write, do you make it a priority to ensure your characters are ethnically and/or sexually diverse?
Or do you focus on telling your story, and not worry about what skin color or sexual preference your characters have if not relevant to the story?
When you write, do your characters smoke cigarettes (or vape), drink alcohol, or do drugs?
If so, are you trying to convey a character trait, or is part of your novel's societal world?
When my character's engage in such 'sins', it's part of their society vs. a trait (usually).
If an editor suggested you remove an entire chapter from your book to improve story flow, but you strongly felt that chapter was essential to your story, would you still remove it?
When reading a description of a person in a novel, do you prefer the description immediately (eg: Tom stood 6 feet tall. His short brown hair and brown eyes ...)?
Or spread out over paragraphs (Eg: hair and eyes description, then narrative or dialogue, then more descriptors)?
When your final draft of your latest novel is complete, and you only had enough funds to hire one professional, who would it be?
A good editor?
An incredible designer for your book cover?
A relatively new book promotor?
Other (specify).
Would you augment your brain with a biological computer chip that would allow you to instantly memorize and recall all new information?
A hard drive, so to speak.
And it comes preloaded with a dictionary and thesaurus.
@NotaliaMateo
I've been seeking evidence as well.
Best I've found is she is 'associated' with 'anti-vaxers', is 'supportive' of the Freedom Convoy, and has 'voice support' for 'far-right' ideologies (whatever those are).
Seems like a campaign to discredit her for whatever reason(s).
@ryangerritsen
"Misinformation", "disinformation" ... these have lost the true meaning. It now means "Whatever WE say is the truth."
Is now the equivalent of sabre rattling, distraction for key issues.
Was there ever a time when politicians actually cared about those they govern?
@ztisdale
For context: if you were to buy all these ingredients (baby carrots, cucumbers, celery, cauliflower, grape tomatoes) on their own (and at a lower-priced market like Food Basics), the cost - do it yourself assembly - would be ~ $15-$20.
How much do you censor your writing to not offend readers?
Let's say you use the word 'retarded' in a dialogue exchange between two characters. A beta reader warns that word may offend some people.
Do you change it (and similar words), or trust the wider audience's maturity?
@RubinReport
@michaelmalice
"Experts say ..."
"Experts warn ..."
"Some say ..."
"An anonymous source says ..."
There's an 'expert' or 'some people' for every issue.
What irks me is how they can never seem to find an 'expert' with the opposing view.
@canadianpoli
How is conservatism 'destroying' Canada?
Am honestly curious; I hear a lot of buzz words, accusations, and so forth.
But nothing concrete.
Please inform, thanks.
If we had to kill and clean our own meat (re: trap a rabbit, skin it, gut and carve it, etc), do you think more people would be vegetarian?
Assumptions:
- are sufficient veggies, wheat options available.
- there are no others to do it, such as local hunter and/or butcher.
A major publisher wants to publish your book!
But …
They need you to edit it and add elements of the genre you least have interest in.
Eg; your romance is now a romance/ slasher horror.
Your sci-fi is now a sci-fi/comedy.
Do you still take their offer?
@weavercafe
Fair point.
Others have suggested that such an alliance of sorts, even if temporary or for promotion, could backfire in this day and age of highly polarized politics.
What do men sometimes (or often) get wrong when they write female characters in their novels, be they major or minor?
And what do women sometimes (or often) get wrong when they write male characters in their novels?
@ryangerritsen
Take note of the language used by media and gov't when describing the Freedom Convoy protestors: "Occupiers."
Who "Occupies"?
Criminals, gangs, violent ppl, invading armies, etc.
The term "Occupiers" was used strategically, perhaps to sway public opinion against the convoy.
Curious question to authors:
Do you think publishers consider author 'traits' when deciding to accept a novel or other works?
Such 'traits' may have nothing to do with the quality of work, such as skin color, sexual orientation, political leanings, etc.
@TrueNorthCentre
Need definitions on what constitutes "feeling harassed". A word? A look?
The issue with such policies is they are extremely nebulous, their interpretation often a product of emotion or vendetta vs. rational application.
Is a potential tool to silence opposition or resistance.
Imagine you post something innocuous (such as 'everyone has suffered in life').
A segment of X/Twitter demand you apologize because others have 'suffered more'.
How many times do you think you'd have to apologize before you're 'forgiven'?
Or would you ever be?
Should parents be required to leave an inheritance for their adult children?
Or should they, as adults, earn their money as their parents did by working hard?
Children do not ask to be created.
Is it not fair to compensate them for their parent(s) choices?
@cdnrefusenik
Nice optics though.
Photo op done in front of fresh and colorful fruits and veggies to signify how much they care about your health, and how awesome our grocery stores are to have such abundance.
Which is ironic given how much fruits and veggies cost these days.
Your first book in a series sells reasonably well, but far from what is deemed ‘successful’.
You’re already writing the sequel.
Your publisher believes that if you kill off your main character for ‘shock value’, sales will skyrocket for book 2.
Do you kill your main character?
As a writer, do you hire sensitivity readers?
And if so, why?
With caveat that you are not purposely out to insult, slander, etc. anyone.
In a way, are you responsible for how others may negatively interpret your work?
Readers:
Do you prefer extensive descriptions of environmental settings (like a messy room, a crowded bar, a quiet church), or do you prefer basic descriptions and allow your senses fill in any blanks (sounds, smells, etc)?
Caveat that important descriptors are added by author.
When ppl read your book, what do you hope they take away from it?
A great story?
Escape reality for awhile?
A lesson learned?
Encourage thinking about one or more issues?
A message that there is hope in the world?
Abandon all hope?
Etc.
What's yours?
If an author demands you not read their book(s) if you follow an opposite political position than theirs (i.e. "If you support Trump, don't read my novels!"), do you oblige them, or read their work regardless, casting aside politics for the simple joy of reading?
Do you think it’s easier (relatively) to edit your book, or someone else’s work?
As in first draft of novel is complete, now arrives first round of edits.
@cbcwatcher
@TaraRHenley
The following quote, from the article, needs to be enshrined and heralded to all Canadian journalist:
"Canadian media does need to be saved, that is very true,” said Henley. “My message is simple. The government cannot save us. We have to save ourselves.”
@ThevoiceAlexa
These covid religious practice videos/news clips/etc need to be archived for future generations to look back upon; they will wisely ask: 'wtf!?'
I wonder the questions children will ask the covidian zealots in 30, 40, 50 years from now.
@Bell_LetsTalk
Bell - honest inquiry:
With the negativity you get from a seemingly large portion of Twitter users (based on comments), do you ever feel the need to address any of the issues raised by posters?
I see a lot of dislikes and comments to your tweets.
Any momentum to address these?
Is there a superstition that you believe in?
Broken mirrors causing bad luck (or walking under a ladder), throwing salt over your shoulder, not washing your hair on certain days, etc?
@TerryGlavin
@cbcwatcher
Wait, what?
Isn’t journalism to investigate and report on facts?
The left has already ‘decolonized’ journalism, come to think of it; most news is biased in favour of the left.
Mission accomplished, I guess.
Strange, the ‘decolonizers’ are themselves colonizing.
Here's one (of many) concerns with bill C-63 (re: monitoring 'online hate'):
Them: as long as you don't post hate online, you're fine!
Us: Ok. I'm against children being exposed to -
Them: That's hate!
Us: I don't believe in efficacy of covid vax -
Them: That's hate!
Etc.
Would you allow a popular author to use one of your main characters in their newest novel?
The author would maintain most traits you've given that character, but author can do anything with that character as they see fit, except kill them off.
You receive an acknowledgment.
Out of curiosity with other self-published authors:
What is your threshold in terms of books sold before you stop writing, and over how many years?
In other words, if your books rarely sell over 3-5 years (or more), do you continue writing for the love of, or give up the dream?
You and a friend co-author a novel over span of 2 yrs. It is almost done.
You have a disagreement, cannot resolve it, decide to take a writing break.
Unknown to you, your friend publishes your collaborative book. You receive no mention nor writing credit.
Confront or ignore?
What’s the longest stretch of time you worked continuously, measured in hours (eg 20 hrs, 30 hrs, etc)?
And what was the job?
Me: 22 hrs back in my construction days rushing to finish a renovation with the crew.
If you discovered an author, poet or other artist you respect has polar opposite views on key issues that are important to you (i.e. political affiliation, religion, immigration, etc), do you still support them and their work, or do you boycott as some 'sins' cannot be forgiven?
Can a person be moral without religion?
The belief in morals can be complex (eg: murder is wrong unless in war, self-defense, etc).
Yet, overall, that to not kill, steal, etc, comes from a higher power?
Or is it concerning that some require these rules from a power to be moral?
@RReynoldsAuthor
Is interesting how many ppl have stated they would add a trigger warning after one ‘complaint’.
Is neither right or wrong, just fascinating how we seem, as a society, to accommodate the dislikes of others.
Could you be an executioner?
Old school type, where your job details hanging or swinging an axe to carry out the sentence as ordered by a court of law.
You would be given an executioners hood to conceal your identity.
@klhicks912
Absolutely!
Having fans of one genre doesn't mean they won't enjoy your other works that populate different genres.
I believe readers - ourselves included - care about great storytelling backed up by great writing.
I've read great books across genres I'm not really into.
If a company (car, fast food, cellular service, etc) asked you to promote their product or service through the actions and dialogue of your characters in your newest novel, would you?
They offer you $3500.
Your characters must promote said goods twice per chapter.
@ryangerritsen
@CTVNews
The issue with these types of climate change articles is they rarely - if ever - invite (or report) on other experts who hold the opposite view.
They give all oxygen to those who support 'climate crisis', and little to none for scientists who say the opposite.
Narrative.
Are you able to provide brutally honesty, but constructive, feedback when you write a review for a book?
Pressure up: could you do this for a friend or family member who wrote their first novel ... and after reading it you believe it one of the worst book ever written?
Has anyone been approached by a publisher who wants to publish your book(s), yet you have to pay them an upfront fee?
Not a ‘scam’ in the traditional sense, but a pay-to-publish business.
I’d pass, of course.
Curious if anyone contacted.
In your opinion, what is the ‘lowest’ level of education an author needs to competently write a book?
I think anyone can, regardless of educational attainment, given they are well read, understand sentence structure and grammar, and have some great stories to tell.
@SeekMasculinity
Yes!
As an addendum: in real life, not video games.
I wish more people would 'level up' and get 'achievements' in reality and not on their consoles.
A major publisher likes your work and offers you a contract.
But -
Due to your ‘controversial’ history (their words), they refuse to sign you up unless you use a pen name.
They choose the name.
Your writing career will forever be under a pseudonym.
Will you sign with them?
Would you let a ghostwriter write your next book, yet they get 50% of all profits made from the book, including any movie/streaming deals?
You provide the overall story layout, characters, plot points, ending, etc
And you get to make final edits.
When you write your novels, short stories, poetry, etc, do you allow your political, ideological, or other leanings to show, keep things balanced by presenting opposing views, or do your best to stay neutral?
You’re weeks away from self-publishing your latest novel.
A new movie or series debuts.
As you watch, you realize the story, plot, and some characters are eerily similar to yours.
Their ending is the same as yours.
Do you still publish it?
Or engage in some serious edits?
What is a concept or subject you cannot seem to grasp, no matter how much you study or how hard to try?
Me: advanced mathematics.
And the way some people vote.
Writers:
Do you write with more focus, energy, imagination, or clarity when you are on stimulants?
Be if coffee (or caffeine in general), alcohol, drugs, or other inputs?
Or do stimulants cloud your process?
