Some of you are likely wondering why I haven't tweeted in a while, either about work at my new job or other things. On April 16, one of my sisters, Nataline Rose Kolbe, died in a car crash. Let me tell you about her (this will take multiple tweets)
Hi all, I'm back from my vacation. It was unfortunately cut short, and allow me a moment of personal privilege to say why.
On Oct. 18, my father, Steven Michael Bohnel, died after a long fight with alcoholism. He was 56. Let me tell you a little bit about him.
Hi all, returning from a brief hiatus on this website to announce that today is my first day with
@PittsburghPG
. I'm working as a general assignment reporter for this newspaper, one that is nearing its 237th birthday.🧵
@mffisher
I don't like dunking on people on this website, it already happens too much. But I feel professional journalists have a responsibility to teach student journalists and, in this case, lift them up as I thought their message was compassionate, empathetic, and indeed, journalism.
Starting another thread to share some personal/professional news. Today is my last day
@frednewspost
. On Monday, I'll begin work down the road covering Montgomery County government and some other subjects
@BethesdaBeat
.
Reporting today from Maryland's capital, a place steeped in history and now the center of political activity. I start a new chapter in whatever little impact I am leaving on this world, as today marks 27 trips around the sun for me.
Let me state this emphatically: Caitlynn Peetz broke the original story related to this settlement in the early stages, before international outlets picked it up. She is a big-time Journalist, with a capital J. It's a privilege to work with her.
NEW: After more than two years of litigation, Montgomery County officials have reached a $275K settlement with the family of a 5-year-old boy who filed suit after they say he was berated and assaulted by police.
Hi all. We've rebranded. This name better encompasses what we do on the day-to-day, reporting on and serving Montgomery County, Maryland.
Our work continues. You can reach me at

Random tweet: Today I turned 29. My mother (on phone) and sister surprised me with a cake and some gifts. I have been extremely fortunate in my life, and it's largely because of them.
I am still in shock. I'll have more words on this soon, when I am able to collect my thoughts. For now, just know Jeremy's selflessness, especially in helping those less those fortunate than himself, will help guide me for the rest of my days. Rest easy, friend.
It is with immeasurable sadness and grief that we confirm the death of Jeremy Arias, the News-Post’s cops and courts reporter and every kid’s highlight of a newsroom tour. He was 34.
I try to keep my opinions to myself about stuff related to my work, but one of my biggest pet peeves about political/government journalism in this country is the constant focus on the horse race and not enough robust coverage on issues that matter in people's day to day lives.
NEW: I went to Harrisburg and Annapolis last week for the inaugurations of
@JoshShapiroPA
+
@iamwesmoore
and found…2028 well under way
Put aside that pining for Michelle Obama, Dems, you have a bench
My column:
The beginning stages of a tree planting for
@Jarias_Prime
at
@frednewspost
. Jeremy liked all kinds of wildlife and nature, so this is bringing some comfort. This magnolia should, with proper care, reach 20-30 feet.
A friendly reminder that it was Pam, then a statehouse reporter
@baltimoresun
, who broke the initial stories about McGrath. She's a damn good reporter.
NEW: Roy McGrath is considered a fugitive by the US Marshals. The local sheriff in Florida checked his house this morning and he wasn’t there.
This is after former Gov. Hogan’s ex-chief of staff skipped out on court this morning.
A longer tribute to a truly one-of-a-kind man, a colleague and a friend who, through his actions, taught me the power and importance of selflessness and giving to those in need. Rest easy, Jeremy.
For those still following the
@MontCoExec
vs
@DavidTBlair
race,
@DrZ_ElectionNut
just told me that most, if not all, of the 4,000+ mail-in ballots left have been canvassed. The teams have started on more than 7,000 provisionals. Zelaya hopes that work will be completed tomorrow.
Parents/teachers/etc. It's been an interesting week at
@MCPS
. I'm following up on what has happened this week, and
@CaitlynnPeetz14
's work (big reporter shoes, to say the least). Want to talk to me? My DMs are open. (I can't talk to EVERYONE, just a warning. Thanks)
At the risk of having an opinion on this website, it's a sad commentary on our local media landscape that I was the only reporter that saw these votes in-person. I get that you can watch the meeting online. But there is no substitute for reporting on something in-person.
I usually keep the personal stuff off here. But today is tough for my family and I. It marks a year since my one sister, Nataline Rose Kolbe, died in a car crash in Placer County, California. She was 25. I've written more about this in my pinned tweets and on Facebook. (1/2)
A little news nugget from the Allegheny County Council budget and finance committee. After spirited debate,
@bethanyhallam
's budget proposal to pay incarcerated people at the Allegheny County Jail $10 per day passes in a 4-2 vote. Gimme a sec to get the vote tally and more info
If you thought the county executive race in
#MoCo
between
@MontCoExec
and
@DavidTBlair
was close, a reminder about what is happening in Frederick County. A recount to determine a race decided by 3 votes. Remember: voting matters. Read up on local candidates, and issues. Then vote
Breaking: Keegan-Ayer has requested that elections officials count by hand each of the roughly 4,600 ballots cast in the race for the Democratic nomination for the District 3 council seat. District 3 encompasses the west side of Frederick.
More votes are in, in the Montgomery County executive race.
@MontCoExec
now has 51,883 votes, and
@DavidTBlair
has 51,729 votes. That means the incumbent is on top by 154 votes. Elrich's lead shrank by 19 votes versus yesterday. Still over 10,000 ballots to count, folks.
Typically don't share many opinions on here outside of sports, but wanted to remind folks: there is no cost to being kind--and it just might make someone's day, no matter how small the gesture. Was just reminded of that.
Some breaking news: remember the I-270 project spearheaded by
@GovLarryHogan
? According to a release from his office this morning, the
@USDOTFHWA
has delayed acting on an environmental impact statement. Hogan's office is exploring legal action. More to come
@BethesdaBeat
I'm at a local Starbucks and a young woman just noticed my press badge and asked, "Are you a journalist?" and I said yes. We had a brief conversation about local news and government and she said as she left: "Good luck!"
It's the little things, people.
It's Primary Election Day in Maryland. I just voted. Find your local polling place, and get there by 8 pm if you haven't voted already. Now, time for work.
I'm finally catching up on the first results of the
@gouchercollege
poll. No matter what you think of the poll, let's consider that
@MileahKromer
has built this into one of the most trusted statewide polls in less than a decade of existence. It is a Maryland institution.
And
@MontCoExec
confirms the indoor mask mandate ends tomorrow at 12:01 a.m. Elrich notes: "I want to remind people that any business entity that serves the public can still require indoor masking if they wish, and they have the right to refuse entry or service."
Simply put, Christine was incredible. She was an intern in name only--that is to say, she was a great reporter on our reporting team
@BethesdaBeat
.
@thedbk
is lucky to have her as a news editor. Her future is bright. Local journalism is better because of people like her.
Today was the last day of my
@BethesdaBeat
internship. It's been fun, and I've learned more than I could've ever dreamed. I wound up with nearly 70(!) bylines over the past 12 weeks. I'll keep freelancing for the Beat and
@Bethesda_Mag
, so stay tuned!
1) This obviously does not reflect the perspectives of everyone who DMed or emailed me or
@CaitlynnPeetz14
.
2) I may have the byline, but the story's backbone is the list of previous stories this week (all Caitlynn's work) and the endless relationships she has established.
After this week, many Montgomery County Public School employees and parents were upset at a lack of leadership and communication from top school officials. Here is what some of them had to say.
I've tried for multiple minutes to find the words to describe how big of a task we have in trying to replace Caitlynn. All the stories she wrote and the sources she built are making that difficult. But more than that, it's the trust she built with the people of Montgomery County
🚨Well, pals, it’s time for me to have some news of my own: Next week will be my last with
@bethesdabeat
.
This is so bittersweet for me because I have genuinely loved my time covering Montgomery County, but my next stop takes me to
@educationweek
, an outlet I’ve long admired.
County officials and community partners celebrated the opening of a new homeless shelter on Nebel Street in North Bethesda. The shelter can house up to 200 people and offers a range of services.
Hi all. Today marks a year since we lost a giant of a man, with an even bigger heart. I've thought a lot about Jeremy Arias since then, and what he would make of current events. I also will never forget how gracious his family is, given what happened. We all can learn from that.
I want to make clear that I am no special reporter. It would be nice to see other members from the media at these meetings once in a while. This legislative body governs more than a million residents, and yet I am the only one here most weeks.
In a meeting with the County Council,
@MCPS
Interim Superintendent Monifa McKnight said another round of schools will be going virtual, but doesn't say which ones. Announcement coming later today, she said.
Whoa:
@MontCoExec
tells reporters on a call that
@MDHealthDept
will end its daily data dashboard for COVID-19. It will be once per week, he said. Will follow up on that.
It has taken all of two days for
@christinezhu142
to produce a really important piece of journalism for us
@BethesdaBeat
. Read more about Enzo Alvarenga, an 18-year-old cyclist who was fatally struck on Old Georgetown Road earlier this month.
I knew this would be good, but it has always struck me how Caitlynn has such a handle on Montgomery County Public Schools that it seems like she has covered the district for a decade or more (She's only been covering the schools since September 2018).
Here's the crowd at the Swissvale Busway station for a presser with
@PeteButtigieg
and other federal leaders on $142M for Pittsburgh infrastructure projects. Scheduled to start at 12:30 pm
It's the first time in three years I won't be in Annapolis for Sine Die, so this is an appreciation tweet for all the journalists there. Their work in Annapolis is so important for Marylanders across this state.
Compared to so many others that have suffered during this pandemic, I am so well-off. I humbly ask for one thing of all of us moving forward: that we not forget about empathy and compassion, qualities I feel can elude us not only on this website, but elsewhere in life. Be kind.
Hi all. A programming note. I will be outside of the country, beginning tonight, for a vacation to Dublin, Stuttgart, Venice, and Florence, with my youngest sister. Therefore, I won't be on this app. I'll be back in the USA late on July 8--for the run-in to the election in July.
Random observation: Can I just note that state legislators sometimes reference newspaper articles in their bill hearings?
@cmcampbell6
just had three of his articles referenced in one just moments ago.
Hi
@nytimes
. I work
@frednewspost
. I appreciate you shining a light on local news orgs, but when I click on the "or search near you" option, we don't pop up. A lot of fine news orgs across Maryland and the region, but not us. Can you include us? Thanks.
"Can we go for a walk now? I've been couped up in here all day."
Watching
@CaitlynnPeetz14
's doggo for about a week. Lots (!!!) Of energy, but she's a good pupper.
Hello from Rockville for today’s school board meeting, the first one open to the public in 1.5 years. Start time is now 12:30
On the agenda:
• Reopening
• The future of the SRO program
• Hiring of a firm for the superintendent search
• Etc
Updates will be threaded here 🧵
In North Bethesda tonight as the
@mcdcc
decides who to nominate for District 14 in the House of Delegates (governor then decides whether to confirm). Meeting at 7:30 pm. Background:
This may fly under the radar a bit, but it's big news. Stuart Harvey was well-respected across Maryland, and probably nationwide. Reporter hat aside, the man was an encyclopedia of knowledge about election law.
I have been attending
@MoCoCouncilMD
meetings for months and am just now realizing that a lot of the chairs in here have plaques... recognizing every single person who has ever served as a Council Member in this county. Whoa.
As political observers have noted earlier, after the new round of provisionals,
@MontCoExec
leads
@DavidTBlair
by 35 votes, winning the first count. (55,497 to 55,462 votes). Blair has said he will request a recount, and it's within the 0.25% margin to be free (government-paid)
Does anybody know any good First Amendment/free speech lawyers based in Montgomery County, MD who are able to talk in a pinch? (Some of my followers probably know what this is entailing)
Thanks in advance.
In a town hall with
@MCPS
and county leaders,
@hanaolooney
says that out of 50 social workers to be hired in schools, only 7 have been hired. Regional and national competition for those positions are a factor, she said.
And here we have it:
@CMJawando
and
@KristinMink_
will be introducing the bill related to rent stabilization next week.
@MontCoExec
has also been looking to do this. The bill text is not yet available, but here's some basic info, per a
@MoCoCouncilMD
press release.
I’m just a spectator, but we’ve got a good crowd on hand at Walkersville HS for Middletown vs Walkersville girls basketball. Gym is nearly full. It’s nice to see communities get behind their high school teams.
I don't think the Frederick County community will ever really appreciate the ways Bill Green has served them over the years. He is literally everywhere.
It's the first day of school in Montgomery County. Here's the scene outside Rosemary Hills Elementary in Silver Spring. Buses are also starting to pull in.
I'm at 11th St. and Liberty Ave., where the parade/march for Pittsburgh Pride 2023 is scheduled to begin at noon.
@GovernorShapiro
and
@AustinDavisPA
are scheduled to participate along the route, which will cross Andy Warhol bridge onto the North Side
Looks like another update has come through in the Montgomery County Executive race.
@DavidTBlair
has 46,824 votes, leading
@MontCoExec
, who has 46,693 votes. That's a 131-vote lead, which means Elrich gained 14 votes versus the last count.
@DandreaJimmy
Jawando says testing should be required in school, per state regulation. Says people should have to opt-out, not opt-in to testing in schools. "We shouldn't be being held hostage to not getting state support, because we want to get people tested in school."
An update: Both
@MontCoExec
's and
@DavidTBlair
's campaigns say they stand by the Board of Elections' audit, and are glad it was caught before the election was certified.
I visited
@Gr8FallsPark
earlier today for the first time. The fact that the National Parks Service offers annual passes to this place for $35 is absolutely incredible. Residents in the region cannot take that for granted (Also NPS please don't raise the price now lol)
County police have identified the body found at the explosion at the condo complex in Gaithersburg. Juan Pablo Marshall Quizon, 36, is determined to have committed suicide by smoke inhalation and burns.
@justupthepike
Wheaton and Silver Spring are fundamentally two different urban cores, both with a Metro station and various bus lines. Both have malls. Both have different major businesses. The issue is the "Silver Spring" mailing address covers WAY too big of a geographical area in the county.
A situation local reporters often find themselves in is calling someone to tell them about a proposed or recently passed policy/bill and ask how it would impact them, only to find out you're kind of revealing this information to said person for the first time.
I've said it once and I'll say it again. Local elections are important, including in
#MoCo
, where there will be two new districts (11 total County Council members) and the county executive race. And a whole lot of other races. This job is important.
Today marks the last week
@MoCoCouncilMD
meets via Zoom as a full council. They're slated to return to Rockville next week. Therefore, it's also the last time we have the opportunity to see
@CmHucker
's cat during meetings.
