On CSPAN, Rep. Jamie Raskin said that after his son died on NYE, his family wanted to be together, so his daughter and son-in-law were with him in chamber. "We wanted to be together ... I thought I could show them a peaceful transfer of power," Raskin said.

Someone with the best of intentions asked me today when I was going to “move up” from education reporting. Honestly, to me, there is no “up” from here. I will spend the rest of my career writing about education if I’m lucky enough to do so.

being harassed is not simply “part of the job” of being a journalist and we have to stop perpetuating the idea that it is. We have to do better for our future writers. Also: stop harassing journalists.

The concept that local journalism is “less than” national reporting is terribly misguided. Communities deserve strong, informed local reporting on matters that directly affect them. If you’ve forgotten that, you’ve forgotten some of the core principles of journalism. Good night.

There’s this misconception that education is an entry-level beat, but that couldn’t be more misguided. The intricacies, the intersection of equity, economics, courts, politics, health, etc. Everything. It all starts here. It takes real, unique skill to do the work well.

Can’t believe I need to say this but I’m not going to entertain any comments on this profile from anyone categorizing a group of students as inherently less than another — including minorities, low income, LGBTQ+ and those in special education programs. Stop it.

Thinking this morning about how tomorrow marks the start of the fourth MCPS school year I’ve covered and I’m still so excited about and energized by this work, which is honestly pretty cool

Is anybody else’s sense of time just completely warped right now? Things that happened two weeks ago feel like months ago. Tuesday might as well have been six weeks ago. I never know what day it is. No? Just me? 😅

sitting with my silly lil coffee on my silly lil balcony with my silly lil dog thinking about how right now, in this silly lil moment, I’m living a life my younger self would’ve never dreamed we’d have, and celebrating all of the tougher moments it took to get here. Whew 😮‍💨
