Iran is in a way heartbreaking, because one gets the sense that, under a different government, its people could be a great and welcome part of the West.
@visegrad24
To be fair, Clare Daly is not at all representative of Western politicians. But, my dear Irish voters:
What on earth is with Clare Daly and Mick Wallace representing your country in the European Parliament?
@carbdiem
Ooo, no.
Complain about American tourists if you want, but you're not entitled to stiff people of money they rely on.
Some British people have this very self-righteous view about tipping. Just consider it to be part of the bill, when you're here. We do.
@yarotrof
@diazbriseno
This is a good opportunity for a serious conversation about the security risks associated with the Russian-citizen community in Spain, and in general with anyone who maintains ties to an enemy state.
@RealCynicalFox
This is so incorrect.
Russia is liable for the destruction it has inflicted on Ukraine. To the extent it has assets in the West, those can quite rightfully be confiscated and redirected to Ukraine.
This is perfectly "rules-based".
@KittySiddy
@TrueSlazac
Free and fair elections? Free speech? Civil liberties for the population? Not imprisoning those who speak out against the regime? Not having a literal dictator?
So many metrics from which to choose...
@USConst_Amend_I
“We see you” is one of those loathsome, vaguely threatening bratty obnoxisms that offend while conveying nothing responsive.
Yet, it’s all protected…
The Fourth, Fifth, and Eighth are up there. But you were always my favorite.

Does anyone remember the Russian guy in the Baltics who posted something like, I'm a Russian patriot, but I can't say it out loud because they'd send me to Russia 😅
@__Injaneb96
So many Iranian Americans have been a welcome voice of sanity on Israel, Ukraine, and indeed Iran, amid this barrage of Islamism, anti-Westernism, and sort of weird postcolonial grievance...
@Valen10Francois
I cannot wrap my mind around the anti-nuclear thing.
Much as it pains me to say, France's policy (despite aging infrastructure and lack of recent investment) is broadly the correct one, and Germany's is wrong...

@carbdiem
No, not here. Tips are incorporated into the wage structure and everyone's expectations.
You don't have to like it, but if you travel here, yes, it is your responsibility to tip according to American custom. Consider it mandatory.
@chrnclsofmdnss
@VlastimilBalaty
Most of the Russian-speaking Ukrainians I've encountered really don't like Russia destroying their cities and killing them. This should be obvious.
@RealCynicalFox
That is absolutely not required.
If Moscow parks its assets in the United States, or Belgium, or the UK, then those assets are subject to the jurisdiction of the laws of those countries.
What the kangaroo laws of a dictatorship have to say about it is of no moment.
@Granty58
@carbdiem
Maybe so! Thanks for that view.
Be sure to tip appropriately if you travel here, though. Foreigners using sociopolitical opinions as an excuse to be cheap are generally viewed fairly negatively.
@DoctorVive
I feel like everyone must have been appalled at the first part of this thread, only to have the conclusion turn out like something instilled by a cult...
@Valen10Francois
I'll never forget reading a French comment on some lifestyle piece regarding a man pursuing a woman he knew was married.
The French guy was like, well, maybe her husband just isn't that satisfying, you never know. And the Americans were appalled. 😅

@SteinbachErika
I mean – yes, the Allies did want to defeat Germany, which they did in fact do. Deal with it.
And regarding those crimes, that was the Red Army (although the expulsions were agreed).
They cannot forgive the Western allies for defeating them, so they lash out.

This is *deeply* immoral, and cynical – every Russian citizen fails every day in his / her responsibility to change Russia's regime. How can we accept Russian citizens when Ukrainians are fighting for their lives?
It's also counterproductive – these people will be the most...
@TrueSlazac
Russia is a dictatorship.
Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan are (more or less) liberal democracies.
No need to be a chauvinist to recognize the facts.
"...Many among us say... we have to find a compromise, and one must be able to negotiate. From a 🇷🇺 perspective, it's not about a compromise; it's about victory. That seems to us absurd and antiquated...", but 🇩🇪 must grasp that perspective.

Neither Slovenia nor Poland is a poor country, nor have they been for some time. Odd bit of chauvinism...
As seen from outside, the UK needs to address its productivity problem, but the Conservative Party has entrenched preferences for a) parked foreign wealth and b) the old.

Well, a mass mvmt of 🇺🇦 women (along with their children, and elderly people) seems to have caused far less disruption in Europe than other migrant flows skewed toward young men.
Various confounding factors – but I'd bet mvmt of younger men in particular causes more problems.

Ukrainians aren't the right color or religion, so in these people's worldview, they cannot be "oppressed".
I keep saying: unlike Bin Laden, no one in 🇺🇲 who wasn't Ukrainian, Russian, Jewish, Polish, or an academic had ever even heard of Bandera before Russia's war in Ukraine.

Reunification wouldn’t have been necessary without the USSR. As in, the USSR is the reason the GDR was able to repress its citizens for 40 years.

Our courts, and those of our allies, are independent of the government, unlike Russia's courts – and no doubt Russia will sue.

The People's Republic of China is our adversary (i.e., our enemy, but politely).

Hong Kong people whom I encounter here often lament the loss of British Hong Kong – if not British rule per se, then the free and unique society that existed there before the territory was crushed by the Chinese state.
These narratives are incredibly tired…

Why keep moving the goalposts, Senator?
Just vote for the deal, and then see if you can get a stricter one after November.
And whatever you do, pass support for Ukraine now.
Stop deflecting and take responsibility for governing.
@islamicize
Ex-Muslims *really* threaten and irritate Islamists, we can tell from the pushback.
But we don't need a "use" for ex-Muslims – if they're pro-Western ex-Muslims in the West, then they're just Westerners. And it's their voices that are most important for non-Muslims to hear.
Super glad that Clare Daly lost her seat in the European Parliament.
I lay a lot of very justified criticism on Ireland. But today, I appreciate the voters of that country for kicking Clare Daly to the curb.
Perhaps she can retire to the sunshine of Assad's Damascus.
@SenRickScott
1. We're not sending Ukraine a check. Most of this money, as you well know, is spent in the United States;
2. Ensuring Ukraine's victory over Russia's occupation force is vital to our alliances and European security;
3. These are separate issues; you can do two things at once.

The Catholic Church should be directing their complaints to Russia and to its sham Orthodox Patriarchate.
His Holiness seems to be displaying some of the anti-Western sentiments that plague certain Latin Americans of his generation, rather than seeing the situation as it is...

This is embarrassing and beneath the dignity of your office, to which you were elected, by us, i.a. to represent our country before foreign officials.
Both of these issues are your responsibility. Not one or the other.
Please stop making excuses and authorize that funding.

I mean, some of my ancestors were among them, but I wouldn't have let them in.
They *did* practice an alien religion. They *were* poor and bedraggled. They *did* congregate unhygeniecally, form gangs, and so on.
No need to rhapsodize. They were pretty undesirable.

Right. This must be why ethnic Russians from Moscow and the ethnic Russian heartland are so vastly overrepresented among the occupiers killed in Ukraine...

Yes – generally when visitors from abroad use social activism as an excuse for being cheap, we view that negatively.
It's obviously not a visitor's place to fail to conform to the tipping culture. If it will change, 🇺🇸ns will change it – and not by individual acts of cheapness.

This is an Australian exchange, but I'm reminded of the British commentator who said something like, You Americans romanticize revolutions because yours went so well. Usually, they make things worse.
@Tyler_A_Harper
It shouldn't be astounding, for two reasons.
First, this isn't a proxy war. Ukraine isn't a 🇺🇸 proxy; it's an independent country whose people do not want to live under 🇷🇺 domination, and they are entitled to ask for, and to receive, aid in the amount required for victory...

I mean, I understand what the Islamists see in progressivism – a soft-headed ideology that is a perfect vehicle for the former to insinuate itself into Western polite society – but I really still struggle to understand any appeal that runs the other way.
Self-loathing?

The US government’s policy is pro-Israel. It’s one thing for citizens of a free country to express themselves; it’s quite another to undermine the elected government’s position from within the State Department.

Most of what you describe as “terrorizing” Palestinian civilians is designed to prevent events like what happened yesterday.
I understand the desire for greater Palestinian self-determination, but sniffing out the rabid anti-🇮🇱 ideology, not to mention Hamas, is a prerequisite.
