I’M HOME!!The hospital let me out last night and I woke up this morning to the sun streaming in and the view of trees from my bedroom window and my gorgeous children wanting a gentle hug with Mama. I’m so lucky and so happy to be back in comfort and surrounded by family 😊
I’m out of surgery!! It took rather longer than we thought, but apparently that’s because I have “an unusually long rectum”. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Also it was very deep inside my pelvis.
Mr Lindsey is confident he got it all&I’m lying in bed drugged up to the eyeballs looking forward to some sleep. I can’t tell you all what a comfort it has been to have all of your support. I’ve been so moved and felt a cushion of love surrounding me and carrying me through. 🥰
4 of 4) It’s so strange writing a post like this. I’m not really one for sharing this sort of stuff. But at the same time, I’d like to show people that as an artist it’s possible to have these blips and then come back better than ever!! 🤞xxx
This video seems to have cheered up a lot of my friends on facebook so I’m going post it here too. For anyone who needs a giggle; the eternally happy Raphael Wigglesworth:
Update: My operation has been brought forward to next Tues, 11th October with Mr Lindsey at the JR in Oxford. Good news!! Just been looking him up and it looks like he knows what he’s doing. AND he uses a robot 🦾 🤩
If you’ve just watched the first night of the Proms you may have seen that we’re now expecting number 3!!! Here it is, facing down with its arm and fist up by its face 😊
Update for those who’d like to know - Looks like I’ll be having an operation on October 22nd. Not set in stone yet but 🤞We know that it’s stage 3 rectal cancer and he’s going to take out the tumour and surrounding lymph nodes>
Such a joy to be back and singing Ryan’s beautiful music. Also first time singing Mahler 4 and I LOVE singing it!! Just incredible to sit right amongst it onstage during that heart-breaking 3rd movement
@the_halle
What playing!
Our first ever single as a family consort from the album we recorded last summer has just been released!! We had such fun making this album in memory of my darling Dad who brought this beautiful music into our lives. Listen to the full track here:
>I’m hoping I won’t have to have any chemo afterwards but they won’t know until after the operation. Thank you all for all your beautiful messages and prayers. I feel surrounded by love!
Right! I’m back!! Since 2019 I’ve popped out two babies and now it’s time to get back on the road aarrgghhhhh. Here’s some shameless self-publicity for those who want to know:
My gorgeous Auntie Rachel died last night. She was the naughtiest, funniest, most beautiful and courageous person I’ve ever known and we will miss her so much. So happy to think of her reunited with my Dad who adored his sister. She held up her 2 fingers to cancer and so will I!
3 of 4) BUT the good news that I received yesterday, is that it just looks like I need an operation and maybe some radiotherapy. I’ll be bouncing back and singing again as soon as my body permits.
1 of 4) I’ve wondered whether to write this post, but I feel that as a performer I have to be honest about why I have to keep cancelling work especially having only really just started again after having children.
Reflection:
1.I’ve never known guilt like the guilt I feel about starting work again having had children. Tearing myself away from this new instinct to have my brain trained solely on all things baby, is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do
2 of 4) I’ve been diagnosed with a colo-rectal cancer, which is funny given that was what my darling Dad died of last year, and I probably had it the whole time we were nursing him!
Ryan and I are delighted to announce the inaugural St Birinus Festival this November! It's a series of concerts featuring visiting musicians and academics as well as our very own Davey Consort () Please do come and please spread the word!!

2.Maybe it’s wrong to start again while they’re so young. So many people do these days but it seems to go against everything that feels natural. I never realised how strong parents need to be mentally in this respect
Ryan and I are performing a recital of Schumann, Müller-Hermann and Mahler together tonight at the Wigmore Hall. If you feel like venturing out on this cold, wet November Sunday evening, we’d love to see you!

If anyone wants to hear a truly beautiful piece of music and one of my favourite pieces of Ryan’s, listen again here to last night’s broadcast of his piano concerto played wondrously by Stephen Osborne and the BBCSSO (2nd in programme, before Mahler)
Amongst all of the of his other Symphonies I had forgotten how magical Mahler's 4th is.
Truly mesmerising performance by
@the_halle
with conductor Ryan Wigglesworth and the dreamlike voice of
@SophusBevanus
at the
@BridgewaterHall
tonight.

is best.
Warning: I’m going to mention the unmentionable - periods! I want to know if anyone else suffers like I do with their voice when they start their period? Is there ANYTHING that can be done to take down the swelling of the cords every month or is it dangerous to take anything? 🧵
(Periods!🧵)It seems worse having had children… I sang a concert last night and it was terrifying having to perform with a voice that just wasn’t working as usual. Having rehearsed with ease, I was looking forward to the concert and then I woke up with a different voice 🤬
1)7th&8th April I’m starting with Ryan’s new Magnificat for Sop, chorus & orch in Bergen with Ed Gardner
10th April - Bach St Matt Pass at RFH
14th April - Mozart Concert Aria with Mark Elder & BBSSO

No it’s my ‘new’ rectum! The surgeon removed the whole damn thing and my colon is now learning how to do the job. My surgeon really wanted to try and do it without me having to have a stoma. Hope you have the same, although life with a stoma is better than no life as you say!

The image of you frolicking around the stage in your gym slip I hope will never leave my memory. ‘Twas but a beautiful sight to behold
