Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this. It has been a huge pleasure to work with so many talented scientists as mentors, collaborators, colleagues and students
@ETH_en
. The mucosal immunology future is bright 💡🧫💊!
Our new paper with
@Diard_Lab

We are delighted to announce that Emma Slack (
@Slack1Emma
) has joined the Dunn School as the Barclay-Williams Professor of Molecular Immunology!
Emma is a leader in the rapidly growing field of the human gut microbiome. Find out more ⬇️
„Covergirl“ 😂
Thanks to Céline Jenni, a former
@ETH_en
debating class student, now science journalist, for the nice write-up (with Sabine Reber)! Seeing our students grow is the best part of this job!
It is always nice to collaborate with
@Diard_Lab
- this time we've written a review. We hope it helps (a little bit) to understand how mucosal immunity manipulates the microbial ecology of the gut. Also we hope that you enjoy reading it!

Fully funded PhD position available! Please RT
Finally the official version is out!
I'd like to apologise to anyone working on gut microbiome metabolism who will now need to do experiments in the middle of the night...
For what it is worth, in my group I try to volunteer myself for the 4am timepoints...
New review out in

from Jacob Wilde and Kevin Foster, that I had the honor to meddle in as the resident immunologist.
What possibilities do hosts have to influence their microbiomes?
May contain pandas...
Enjoy!
Out now! Fantastic collaboration with

@markusarnoldini
. Congratulations the co-first authors Jiayi Lan, Giorgia Greter!
Measuring the metabolic activity of gut microbiome in ambient gases/breath around a live animal!
@AdrianoAguzzi
A little while ago, I got an excellent and critical review back which finished with a section “notable/exciting things about this work”. I now add this to all my reviewing. Spreads a bit of happiness, and no need for crystal balls!
My two kids crashed my online teaching _twice_ today. BUT both kids were fully dressed both times and neither of them talked about bowel movements. I'm putting this down as a "win".
Do you want to know how much energy you actually get from your gut microbiome (and what measured SCFA levels really mean)? Then look no further! 👇🏻
Exciting new work from
@markusarnoldini
and Jonas Cremer.
That‘s a wrap for
#ISME18
!
My take-homes:
1) All mucosal immunologists should go to microbial ecology meetings!
2) I think my closest prokaryotic ancestor is called Hod…
3) I should think about redox chemistry way more than I usually do.
Thank you
@ChristofHollig1
and all!
Good luck to all the 1000 teams running the 114.77km of the

@foodimmunology

Congratulations to

Track 10 was hillier than I remember agreeing to 😂 but I survived, with photographic evidence to prove it.
Excited to share our latest pre-print: "Non-invasive monitoring of microbiota and host metabolism using Secondary electrospray ionization-Mass spectrometry"
Huge credit to Jiayi Lan, Giorgia Greter,

New swisstopo app! Very handy in the mountains! The track recording and drawing is brilliant. And it is free. What not to like? (Disclosure: husband involved in its production. But generally I’m hypercritical of his stuff 😉)
All geared up to kick-off the spring semester with the 8am Immunology lecture tomorrow IN PERSON with masks 🥳!

I've even managed to find my "legally permitted non-laser" pointer, which I assume is still rubbish (has anyone discovered a good one of these?)

If not, why not??? My kids are fascinated by infections (pin worm, anyone?🤦♀️) and there is so much to tell in the progress humanity has made in saving the lives of millions.

I’m being asked to comment for several events called « race for a COVID-19 vaccine». Just to be clear, the race is all of us against the virus. The >40 clinical trials give us a chance to win this. Good explanation why 👇🏼. All involved are doing something amazing.

is very proud to announce that Julia Vorholt (IMB) will co-head the NCCR “Microbiomes” for the next four years. This NCCR researches how bacterial colonies affect the health of humans, animals and plants.
Markus Aebi is one of those giants who has had a huge influence on the direction of my science and who point blank refused to take any credit for it! Inspiring generations of scientists to add a spoonful of sugar to their ideas. We wish him a very happy and fruitful retirement!
With Markus Aebi’s retirement, ETH is losing a great scientist. The microbiologist has also made a name for himself as a teacher and mentor. His passion is reflected in his involvement in many university institutions and in a series of prestigious awards.
We’ll said Jen! Imposter syndrome is much less of a problem than A**holes who make brilliant people feel unwelcome. Let‘s commit to calling it out when we see it happening! An ally in the room is worth thousands on here.
1/ Hi twitter academia. This is a 🧵on an experience I had at a conference recently. After my oral presentation, I was TOLD that it was not reasonable to pose and test a hypothesis in mice based on observations made in the clinic. I was TOLD this was the WRONG way to do it.
