As a listener, you streaming music does not support an artist. The math is simple. Spotify pays $4000 for 1 Million plays. Even if you play a song 1000 times, $4 is generated. Then split between all songwriters/label/whatever the deal is. Find an actual way to support your faves.
This kid made this remix in his bedroom, and now it has inspired an official single for Fat Joe. He's in the video and everything. That's some far reaching DJ/producer creativity. Big up!
"Be Thankful For What You Got" singer & writer William DeVaughn worked at DC Water when he spent $900 to cut a demo of the song at a Philly studio. It went on to become a timeless international smash, but he never quit his job. Here he is performing it at his own retirement party
YOU'RE DOING GREAT.
It's fucking HARD out here right now. You're doing great. You never planned for any of this; no one did. The strange feelings you've never felt before are because we've never been here. Getting through the day is a win. Even if it feels like a loss. Keep on.
Great news! I’m partnering with
@AppleMusic
to bring my mixes to their platform. Very exciting to be at your fingertips on such a big platform. First one up is my “Satisfaction Guaranteed” mix, one. Hip-hop, funk, disco, reggae, and more, all cut-up and sequenced in mixtape style
If there's one thing I think every DJ should take away from the Grimes incident -- it's DON'T get on the mic and announce to the room you're having technical difficulties.
The minute you do that, everyone in the room (or all over the internet in this case) knows. Avoid doing it,
When is the last time you really listened to "Blowout Comb" by Digable Planets? It's a flawless record. Aged incredibly well. Take it in when you have the time
Ended my most recent 1-hour set cutting over "Stay Fly" by Three 6 Mafia, a song that still sounds brand new today. Way ahead of it's time. Go peep that set too, you'll like it.
Stakes Is High. One of Dilla's & De La's finest moments. And it keeps getting better with time. Bumped Dilla for 12 hours yesterday, and that was a common thread. Longevity, baby! Ayo Dave!
This is 🤯 - one of Grandmaster Flash's copies of Chic's "Good Times", gifted to

. Crayon markings and all. As used in "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel"

One of the best exercises you can do for scratching (on turntables, CDJs, controllers, anything) is just doing a basic baby scratch consistently for as long as you can.
Then get rhythmic with it, leave some space, come back in, clean it up. Slow/fast hand speed. Basic control.
If you're a fan of music/arts & you've got it in your budget to support right now, today, please consider paying it forward. Subscribe, donate, buy. The toll the pandemic is taking on the arts community is immense. There has been so much loss & we're still only seeing the start.
You know what sucks? When you wear a dope shirt under your sweater thinking you're going to take your sweater off at some point during the day and flex with the dope shirt but then you don't take your sweater off all day and then you waste a wear of the dope shirt. That sucks!
Biz made everyone feel welcome and could turn any room upside down with laughter. Every single situation I ever saw him in became hilarious. And he remembered everybody. One of the most positive people ever. Long live his spirit & character

If your DJ edit cuts out the non-4/4 parts of a song, a lot of the time, you're missing the point. Those time changes and extra beats & bars are in there for a reason. Work with the record, learn to count your way backwards, and you (and the listener) will be better for it.
It would appear that Black Thought's well is bottomless. New projects coming or out with Sean Kuti, El Michaels Affair, his own band, released that album with Danger Mouse last year... all projects filled to the brim with top notch lyrics.
Your Top 5 is incomplete without him.
Last night, the promoter brought his personal copy of Fela Kuti "Expensive Shit" to the DJ booth and gave it to Rich Medina mid set. He put it on, and went and took a bathroom and smoke break.
That's how it's done, folks.
OG Anunoby's
@Raptors
buzzer beater from last night, remixed. That was INCREDIBLE. Big up OG & Kyle Lowry on a spectacular play. And shouts out to
@KardinalO
for the timeless classic...
Incredible amounts of fun last night on stream live from
@djjazzyjeff

smashing Toronto Bastid's BBQ '23 Day 1. We are back today with Day 2. Thank you to all who support these BBQs, in my city and abroad!
The rollout for this album has been incredible.
Lead up singles & videos, live appearances, performances. I’m perfectly primed for the release of the album tomorrow July 12.
And oh yeah: the music has been great, too. That helps. Big up the OGs Pete Rock & Common.
Vestax PMC 05Pro. Who had/has one?
Out in Calgary and my brother still has my first “pro” mixer. I bought this off of Sixtoo (
@sixtoobeats
who also gave me my name) when I was 16/17 and upgraded from an American DJ two-channel mixer (which I recall being pretty decent as well).
I know the world's in a real bad place... but I can make you dance (if you want me to). The world needs some uplifting right now. Hope this is part of your fix. Eternal shoutouts to ZAPP & Roger Troutman.
Today I DJed for 1 hour between DJ Maseo & DJ Jazzy Jeff and 5 minutes after my set I was playing stuffed animals with my daughter while listening to the stream. That's a story I will tell my daughter when she grows up.
When we go back to doing shows, how about we support our friends directly instead of asking for guest list? Let's just make it the norm. Common gesture. Maybe even make it taboo to ask in most situations! Let's be proud of putting our money in our artist community's pockets.
