If you enjoyed the beautiful music at the
#Coronation
please support music in schools. It is essential for the future cultural life of the nation to inspire and train the next generation of musicians. Your local bands, choirs and orchestras need your support.
Today, among all the robes and fur and ceremonial are some very beautiful bits of craftsmanship. Keep an eye out for the Bishop of Winchester's Insignia for the Order of the Garter.
Bishops have a habit of leaving their robes behind when they retire from the House of Lords. We have been sorting through the large number, and so far, discovered ones owned by Cundy, Booth-Clibborn, Selby and Askwith.
I seem to be the only one who has not put up a Christmas tree today. Any one else holding off till Advent 2 or 3? Just does not quite seem right so early.
Mixed feelings today after 13 years it's my last day in Parliament for a little while. Having worked for 70 bishops & three 2nd Commissioners I am off on secondment managing the Dioceses Commission for 6 months. More politics but a different sort, I hope to be back in the spring
During the ceremonial last week I was let through the cloisters in Parliament, part of the old Palace of Westminster usually off limits to staff. The restoration has been beautifully done, I hope more people get to see this great medieval survival.
Due to the new hot desk policy at Church House the Lego Parliament has had to relocate. It has been moved into our office in the Palace. Pleased to report no bits were lost in transport and the lights are back on.
Today I get to be the Lords Spiritual wardrobe department collecting robes for the State Opening and meeting the lovely team at the bishop's palace.
Does anyone know where I am visiting today?
Today we said goodbye to Grannie. She taught me many things, how she kept one coffee going all day, to make some amazing puddings and change gear like I am driving a sports car. Also to draw, paint, sculpt, play cards & how to drink Gin&Mix (1/3 gin, 1/3red & 1/3white vermouth)
@WalkerMarcus
The four abbesses of Shaftesbury, Barking, St Mary at Winchester and Wilton were summoned by Henry III to the Long Parliament. Also records from 645 show that King Wightred of Kent summoned Abbess Mildred, Etheldride, Æte and Wilnoda to Council at Beaconsfield.
Those of the praying sort. Please keep our MPs and their staff in your thoughts this week. Just a glance at their twitter mentions & inboxes will show only some of the volume of abusive messages being left. Whatever their views & voting record they don’t deserve this.
A busy day today preparing the bishops for the State Opening. 13 attended the ceremony, 12 will respond to the speech over the next five days of debate on a variety of subjects ranging across devolution, heath, justice, climate, environment, economy, foreign affairs and culture.
Acting as a postman today for the Legal Office, collecting Ammending Canons from the Crown Office. This is what an Amending Canon looks like once it completes all its stages in Synod/Parliament and has recieved Royal Assent. The Great Seal is then applied to the offical copy.
This is the oldest Lords Spiritual State Robe, it was assessed recently and most of it is thought to be around 350 years old. The newest parts are the two fur edge pieces.

Here you are. This is the oldest state robe in the collection. As you can see it has had a few repairs over the years. We have 15 in total which are usually handed from one Lord Spiritual to their successor. This one however, only seems to have ever resided with one See
Well a very lovely, if slightly damp (torrential rain) day at Buckingham Palace. Lots of lovely conversations with charity reps, clergy and others invited to share the day.
The Lord Spiritual wardrobe department opened for business today for the State Opening. Cue the big logistics chart of who has a robe, who wants to borrow one, and how we get it to London in time.
Today is the final day of Bishop Graham being Bishop of Norwich. It has been fantastic to work with him in the
@UKHouseofLords
over the last decade. He is currently the only bishop to both walk on custard & skydive. The Eastern Daily Press had great fun visualising him skydiving
Today
@bishopSarahM
responded to Government Statement “Preparations for Leaving the EU” asking the Government how many groups funded through the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund will have their work with refugees put at risk if this funding is lost due to a No Deal Brexit
Having a little explore of Church House before the
@synod
arrives in a few weeks time. Reminded that is not the only National Assembly to have used the building. It has also played temp home to
@UKHouseofLords
&
@HouseofCommons
and it has also hosted a State Opening of Parliament
In the autumn, several new bishops will join the bench. The Bp of Newcastle, Bp of Winchester Bp of Norwich, will take their seats. They will bring expertise in rural communities, post indutrial communites, International Freedom of Religion & Belief, climate and environment work
So today I said goodbye to my lovely desk of 12 years in Church House and moved round the building. My new desk has a rather different view as you can see but also seems to be rather lacking in colleagues.
@spelmanc
It's been a pleasure to work with you over the last four years. You are the only Second Commissioner to serve 3 different PM's & made some lasting changes to laws on modern slavery, tax transparency, women in detention, persecution of religious communities and so much more.
First day in new office in Morton’s Tower at Lambeth Palace above the old prison in the old porter’s lodgings. Have spent most of the day hoovering the years of dust and moths out the carpet. Sign on wall would suggest that room was last used when Lord Mackay was Lord Chancellor.
Quite a day today, the Loyal Address and first meeting of the King with Parliament. These occasions in Westminster Hall are rare and its such a privilege to see the constitution in action. The Church, State, Peers and Commons gathered to formally recognise the Crown.
The Bishop of

asked a question about air pollution in London and the need for research into the long term effects on children's health.
A sad day in Chichester today saying goodbye to my first employer. Aged 12 I volunteered in the greenhouses washing plant pots and later ran the gardens before going to Uni. Over tea each Sat they taught me gardening, politics, science, and encouraged me to join

Well, what a wonderful concert, with packed audience and standing ovations all round. Such a powerful performance of Dream of Gerontius. A great privilege to sing in the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls. 🇻🇦 🇬🇧

day has been great fun. The Royal Lego is out again, the house is decorated for the party on Monday. We have a festival in the park today which has been a great celebration of local talent with a light show later. It’s great to see the community coming together

Cathedrals, Abbeys, Priories and Churches along with The Church House, Westminster have played host to

Frank's work was the best example of how working cross party could achieve change on child poverty and food banks. One of the last sitting MPs to a member of the General Synod and the Ecclesiastical Committee. A sad loss to Parliament.
Congratulations to

who was introduced to

as the first woman to join the Lords Spiritual seven years ago today. You can find out more about Bishop Rachel's contributions to the Lords here:

Today was my last day being based in Church House and after 13 years I found a new window hidden in a cupboard. From April I will be working out of Lambeth Palace and back with the parliamentary team.
Happy seventh anniversary of your introduction to the Lords

This speaks to me as someone with dyslexia, it’s a daily battle to complete work as I don’t think the same way as colleagues. I prefer to hand write docs, I prefer to call rather than email as written expression is difficult. But it why I enjoy singing as it does not effect music

Such good fun last night to be able to say thank you to
@evepoole
and
@LMinghella
for all their help and support over the last few years. They have both made a huge impact in their roles in the Commissioners and will be very much missed.
It’s been a pleasure working with
@BishopNewcastle
. Today she gave her valedictory speech in the budget debate. Her forensic mind for detail, deep commitment & support for her diocese, social justice, young people esp the vulnerable or with disabilities will be greatly missed
Today
@bishopSarahM
asked the Government what response it was making to the recommendations from the Home Office Scientific Development Branch into the sale of rounded knives. Studies showed reducing availability reduced crime and the number of lethal injuries.
@dioceseoflondon
Still remember my first day meeting the Lords Spiritual at Lambeth Palace, sat next to Abp Rowan, Bp London & Bp St Albans, rather intimidating. First thing they wanted to make clear was "the CofE doesn't exist it is made up of its parishes. Can't say 'the Church thinks or does"

@BishopPaulB
Private Members Bill to remove the two child limit from Universal Credit has been published today. This is part of a long term piece of work which the bishops have been undertaking on welfare reform. You can follow the Bills progress here:
Parliament took a moment today to remember those from both Houses and staff who died in conflict, especially those recorded on the memorials from WW1 and WW2.
