I research women and far-right movements in the U.S. and Europe, including why women are increasingly likely to join and how their role has changed. This speech was a masterclass. 1/
As a result, more women are not only joining far-right movements but are becoming active participants. This, in turn, helps normalize the movement, making it more socially acceptable and contributing to the rise of the far-right in places like the U.S., France, and Germany. 11/11
Place the woman in an environment that promotes traditional gender roles, even if it is a façade. Many of these women promote traditional gender norms while often violating them (e.g., working outside the home). 3/
First, platform a woman. This is becoming an increasingly common and intentional tactic, especially if you can use that woman to promote the heteronormative (and white) family archetype. 2/
What is the cumulative effect? First, and most importantly, is the intentional framing. Putting women in leadership positions softens the rough edges of the movement that historically has been patriarchal and misogynistic. This mainstreams the movement. 9/
Raise the alarm about the threats to children. The threats to children are always a powerful motivator, which is why the “Save the Children” campaign and attacks on schools and libraries as threats are so effective.
“She had been sex-trafficked by the cartels at age 12.” 5/
Use references from the majority culture, like religious symbols and practices, references to ethnicity, or language (wearing a cross, referencing prayer). 4/
Frame immigrants as a threat to women and children, especially white women.
"Just think about Laken Riley....this beautiful, 22-year-old nursing student went out on a jog one morning. But... She was brutally murdered by one of the millions of illegal border crossers” 6/
Second, use women and children (especially children) as a foil against whatever you’re fighting against: current leadership, immigrants, foreigners, etc. Who doesn’t want to do whatever you can to protect children? This motivates participation. 10/
Hearken back to an idealized version of the nation (e.g., references to the blood of patriots who overthrew tyrants and pioneers who tamed the wild), and we need to reclaim that.
"Despite the current state of our union, our best days are still ahead." 7/

There has been one scandal after another his entire term, but the past couple of weeks have seemed particularly fraught. What’s the probability Trump doesn’t even make it to November? Do you agree with Carville’s assessment that Trump will drop out?
Why men are generally more dependable in the workforce ~
• Their hormones are stable
• No monthly periods
• No chance of pregnancy
• No need to recover from birth
• No menopausal symptoms
• Handles stress far better
• Have more energy
• Don’t feel as much responsibility
Can someone please take these ideas in my head and put them on paper in a coherent and convincing form?
Please and thank you.

As someone who researches women in the far-right, I agree 💯. I wrote a thread about her speech highlighting some of the points you make here. It’s a trend that cannot be ignored.
As someone who studies far-right movements, this is 🎯. It’s much easier to consolidate your own power if you can unite people around a common “enemy,” even if (especially if?) that enemy is manufactured.
My son has Down syndrome and autism. He is nonverbal, he constantly stims and makes noise.
Last week his school had a lockdown drill. We were called to pick him up because he became very agitated and would not calm down.
How do you think he would fare during an actual event?
Police stopped a shooter outside my kids’ schools today. Students are still hiding in case of an accomplice.
My autistic 9th grader is texting me from a cabinet. Her legs are asleep & she’s very hungry.
1st response was mom guilt: I should’ve packed a snack in case of shooting.

For real. A couple of weeks ago I used a poll to get their feedback on Zoom, but really I was just killing time. Since I used the polling feature, that's considered active learning, right?
This morning, I got up early. Switched summer clothes for winter clothes. Did laundry. Paid bills. Made meals for the freezer. Baked bread. Filled the bird feeders. Repotted some plants. Topped up my spices. Organized the tea drawer.

I teach both Am Gov and Internat'l Relations. Americans really have no idea that our political ideologies do not translate well outside of the U.S. This is evidenced by Rs screaming "socialism" at any Dem proposal. Um, try comparing Ds with Euro social dem parties.

True. I’m in a church FB group of primarily conservative pastors (added by someone who clearly doesn’t know me 🙄) and there have been frequent discussions re: translations and promotion of ESV.

I study women in the far-right and wrote a thread about this speech. She really nailed the standard approach on all levels: appeal to traditional gender roles, frame everything as a threat to women and children, etc. I'm impressed she managed to cram it all in in 17 minutes.

💯 For years the church has warned against the dangers of postmodernism, and yet we've done little to equip people how to discern truth from lies. As a political science professor I've completely shifted my focus to critical thinking skills because students aren't equipped.

👋 Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum here! I watched your video, and it’s riveting stuff. But if you think you’ll be touching ballots in my state, you’ve got another thing coming.
Years ago when I taught European politics, my bemused students couldn’t believe that someone like Berlusconi could be elected leader of a country. Repeatedly.
Silvio Berlusconi, the brash media mogul who revolutionized Italian television using privately owned channels to become the country’s most polarizing and prosecuted prime minister, died at 86.
For real. We have a child with multiple disabilities, and we've already hit our deductible. We have an HSA account with contributions deducted from paychecks throughout the year, but all our bills are hitting right now.
Last night I picked up seven prescriptions. For our family, that’s only a third of the meds we need monthly. It cost $910.67.
HIV meds cost $3596.46 a month.
My IVs? ~$6,200 a month.
We have a $14K deductible. It’s mid-February, and we’re $12,500 into it.

Gifting this article. As someone who grew up in Ottawa County this does not surprise me at all. My brother-in-law is an administrator for Ottawa County and pretty conservative himself, and even he is horrified by the commissioners’ antics.

One comments on my evals in response to the question, “would you recommend this class to others” -– “I would tell them if they have to take this class, I didn’t dread going to it.” High praise. 😆
