But you are overlooking a key point my friend. Now anyone can open a fake account, impersonate whomever they want, pay 8 bucks and cause havoc and confusion.
It’s not about the money, it’s the fact that the blue check now has zero meaning or credibility other than ‘you paid.’
There was something deeper about
#Avicii
’s music—emotive, soulful chords that touched the heart. He had massive talent, no question, versatility too. In a genre full of shallowness and false platitudes, his music showed vulnerability, depth, originality. Rest peacefully Tim 🙌🏼

How did they do it? Beyond the obvious—enforced quarantine, contact tracing, mask compliance—this

piece goes levels deeper to explain Taiwan's success. "A happy marriage of technology and democracy," built on open-source data.
Recently Jann Wenner made a preposterous claim (on the Howard Stern show) that Rolling Stone was the place where hip-hop journalism flourished.
It made me furious because it’s a bald-faced lie. The lack of hip-hop coverage in RS was the reason we started The Source.
FU Wenner.
Paul Hardcastle on the making of 19, his legendary electro track (1985) inspired by a Vietnam war documentary.
You can see Paul banging out the beat on a Linndrum and sampling those iconic vocals on an E-mu Emulator II. 🤯
Anyone who knows me knows how much this is my SHIT! 🙌🏼
Devastatingly sad news: the sudden passing of Chi Modu—legendary hip-hop photographer, good-hearted friend, talented colleague, kind soul.
Rest peacefully Chi, your warm heart and your artistic gifts will thrive in this sphere forever. Love you brother.
So many memories… 😢
@Ian_Schwartzman
There is a severely flawed logic behind the new system. Removing the check from official accounts causes confusion. Allowing people to impersonate anyone and pay for a check causes chaos. I still love Twitter, but this decision may cause real damage to the platform.
The difference between real music heads and everyone else is that we can listen to an entire DJ set of rare groove, b-sides and undiscovered gems and be totally transfixed by each new track, while the masses only want to hear songs they already know, repeated ad nauseam.
This is classic hip-hop, skillful hip-hop, foundational hip-hop, iconic hip-hop, feel good hip-hop.
This is the hip-hop I will always love, where legends stay rooted as true fans and everyone respects the path.

•Prince had to be in a separate house from MJ, 'cuz that would make an unfair fight
•House 3 should be +Salt-N-Pepa / - Whodini
•House 5 should be +U2 / -Billy Idol
R.E.M., Springsteen, Petty and MANY MORE of course deserved to be on there, but no space.
We gave De La Soul two covers during my time as EIC of
@TheSource
. First was March 1989, one of our earliest issues, wherein we expressed our love for ‘3 Feet High.’
The second was June 1991, we’d upgraded our look and our logo and timed it to match when ‘Dead’ hit the streets.
In April 94 Elektra refused to release
@MFDOOM
/ KMD's 'Black Bastards' LP. A firestorm over its controversial cover art was sparked in
@billboard
& spread into Warner's corporate suite.
In response I wrote this editorial for the May 94 issue of

It’s 10pm in New York City in the summer of 1983. You’re at home watching Channel 5 when suddenly a bunch of the coolest, edgiest, most memorable celebrities of all time pose an urgent question:
Do you know where your children are?
30 years ago tonight KRS-One, hip-hop's most essential and respected artist, charged into NYC's Sound Factory with a crew of hardrocks and threw PM Dawn, a hapless crossover act, off the stage. The club went nuts, and the NEXT DAY I sat down to interview the man for

Happy 50th hip-hop!
Rappers I considered “the greatest” at some moment in time:
Sugarhill Gang
Furious 5
Kurtis Blow
Run-DMC
Beastie Boys
MC Shan
LL Cool J
Slick Rick
KRS-One
Rakim
Chuck D
Kane
G Rap
Ice Cube

Nas
Biggie
Jay Z

Some terrible news: hip-hop legend Lovebug Starski has died suddenly and unexpectedly in Las Vegas at age 60. ☹️ Very sad. The man was a gifted entertainer, a warm, generous soul. He had been rocking Vegas venues and joined KRS-One on stage last week. Rest peacefully good sir.
This is the

Incredible to see ALL the awesome, hilarious, diverse and even divisive responses coming in! The %s are really spread out, which I take as a win. Obviously I sought to cover a lot of ground genre-wise. I love every artist on the list and MANY more, so tough choices were req'd.

I've gotten 98% super positive, fun, engaging responses and like 2% 'you left out' or 'this is stupid.' To the haters I say: go make your own lists my peoples, let's see how it stacks up?
I’ve been a Mantronix super fan since ‘Fresh Is The Word’ in 1985. Kurtis was a pioneer in electronic beat programming for hip-hop & dance music, massively influential.
Yet because Kurtis keeps a low profile and rarely does interviews, I learned a ton from this
@djhistory
piece.
Nas and Wu-Tang, two of hip-hop’s most legendary artists, are joining forces for a tour.
The uncomfortable truth: two of the worst live performers I’ve seen.
Nas: uninspired on stage, no real show, boring.
Wu: unorganized, chaotic, absenteeism.
Hopefully they step it up?!
@TexDolly
You are profoundly misinformed about Kamala’s positions and track record sir. She is far from a socialist.
Relatedly, how many Americans do you think are unaware that Social Security is socialism?
A lesson from the recent 💵 revolution: Why don’t we teach real-life finance skills in high school?
e.g. How does the stock market work? What is a mortgage? Credit cards?
I’ve felt this way for decades. We’re stuck learning trig, so now the kids are fending for themselves.
Something extra sticky about Stezo’s rhymes. He oozed the funk—unhurried, downright syrupy—forcing his lyrics deep into your cranium.
‘Slow down, and yo, let the rhyme flow...’
Influenced by EPMD and guided by Paul C’s megatronic beats, Stezo released two classic 12s in 1989.

The Diabolical Biz Markie delivered joyous entertainment to every track, event and person he touched. From his stoopid fresh early 12s to his crazy charismatic live performances—as a beatbox, a rapper and a DJ.

When he made his way out West, he made history—iconic shoots with Dr Dre, Snoop, Eazy E and Tupac Shakur, who became one of Chi’s most frequent subjects.
What made Chi special as a photographer was not just his technical skill, but the genuine and human approach to his work.
Saddened to learn of the passing of Ricky Powell, legendary photog, Beastie buddy, NYC counterculture icon—a quirky, hilarious and kind soul, the underdog you loved to love, a one-of-kind, original downtown force of nature. Rest peacefully good sir. 👊🏼
Back in the day
@TommyBoyRecords
had a clever promo strategy. They would print Exclusive A-List DJs Only on every piece of vinyl to psyop DJs into thinking they were important and thus play the record.
They weren’t even real ‘test pressings,’ but they sure look official. 👀

Bizarre hip-hop coincidence! 🤯
In 1991 two young MCs from Queens, NY named Havoc and Prodigy form a group called Poetical Prophets, later changed to Mobb Deep.
Same year, two LA rappers become key members of a group called South Central Cartel. Their names? Havoc and Prodeje.
DJ culture is one of the best things about Vegas. No city has more nightlife events, hundreds of big and small DJ gigs every week. There is a large, friendly community of top quality DJs living here, sharing good vibes, a passion for music, the weirdness of Vegas, it’s unique. 🎧

Many DJs planning to livestream today, which is awesome. But there should be an industry-wide pause when

Q: What's it like to be in a Las Vegas casino during COVID? A: Bizarre... and likely dangerous.
A few of the major resorts on The Strip reopened two weeks ago, along with most of downtown.
Properties, executives, and staff have good intentions—but the visitors mostly do not.

•Whitney Houston was originally in House 7 and I gave it to Chaka. Very tough call and probably should have gone the other way.

I’m visiting Taiwan, a place that is both COVID & MAGA free! It provides good perspective on the dumpster fire that is America right now. I damn sure forgot how this feels—moving about freely, enjoying life in public, unconcerned about a dangerous virus, untouched by ignorance.

For years I've been saying that all modern dance music and all electronic music can be traced to Kraftwerk, Chic and/or Giorgio Moroder. Now with the big Dave Grohl reveal and his (accurate) worship of Tony Thompson, my theory gains unexpected support. 🤔
Dropping my son (age 4.5) at pre-school today, he said words that warmed my heart: Daddy, I can’t wait to see what we learn at school today!
Excited about education or master parent manipulator? Time will tell.
In the 80s if you had good taste in music, by default your listening palette included hip-hop, rock, dance and pop. Genre bending was hot, see Blondie and Talking Heads. Hall & Oates and Tears For Fears got love in the hood, Run-DMC blew up in the burbs. Funkiness knew no bounds.

Lots of chatter on: is a band 70s or 80s? Like Steely Dan is not in House 6 because nearly all their big records were 70s (and yes I know Gaucho came out in 1980). Ramones belong in House 2, but I declared them 70s. Sister Sledge straddled 70s/80s so that was a close call.

This 5-mic tweet warms my heart, 'cuz I know it's true. Perhaps The Source Mind Squad's most enduring contribution to culture is the record rating system. Ratings launched in '91 with a bad broken record icon, evolved into the beloved mics by '92, this update by '93.

Respectfully I don’t understand why this is shocking, or even unusual? Anyone using TikTok (or any app) should assume the app’s creator can access their user data. If you are concerned about a Chinese tech company knowing your user data, don’t use TikTok.
Can we please stop treating Clown-ye West 🤡 as a serious person? He’s obviously playing the media to drum up attention to an album or project. He’ll never be on any official ballot.
In fact he’s a mentally ill megalomaniac, surrounded by enablers, in need of medical attention.

Following are my (snobby, jaded) criteria for attending a DJ/nightclub event, age 50+ after 35 years in the music biz.
• I’m a huge fan of the DJ and/or a personal friend
• I will be treated VIP style, no waiting, favorable viewing/seating etc
Otherwise I’d rather stay home.
It's hilarious how bad 'big room EDM' sounds now. Just noisy and terrible and synthetic and disgustingly out of place.
I know, I know, it was always atrocious. I know you always hated it. But for a few years those sounds really worked for the young'ns. No longer. Good riddance.
Heads up DJs, this is bonkers: COVID-19 relief bill would punish streaming of copyrighted content.
Insane as it sounds, the legislation includes a 10-year prison term for streaming protected music content, also creates a Copyright Claims Board. WTF?! 🤬

Yeezeys. A lottery for early purchase, a resale opportunity. Patient pandemonium in Taiwan for an American rapper’s footwear.
Whodini heavy on my mind. Their essence is the Friends/Five Mins 12" (1984), two absolutely PERFECT records crafted by genius Larry Smith, iconic NYC music.
Every word/sound on these joints is imprinted onto my DNA. Vocals funky yet meaningful, stayed with me for a lifetime. 🙌🏼

A question for the Prince aficionados: why isn’t Dez Dickerson (first appearance at :11) better known?
Turns out he became a born-again Christian and sexual themes began to trouble his conscience.
Under-reported aspect of F1 in Vegas: numerous headline-level artists/DJs were booked for private events at top dollar but ended up playing to a crowd of like 20 people. I doubt that will happen again.
