"Study after study shows how the media’s overemphasis on crime makes people feel less safe than they really are and negatively shapes public policy around the criminal-legal system. And study after study shows that it’s racist and inhumane."

October 12 is now officially "Indigenous Peoples Day" in Baltimore City. Thank you Baltimore City Council and Indigenous Strong MD, who have been advocating for this change since 2016. 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
The most disturbing part about this REALLY disturbing story is when the monster explains how Trump gives hope to other monsters: “A lot of people who disagreed with someone like Trump … might vote for them anyway just because the establishment doesn’t like them.”

At the "witch trials" referenced in the title, innocent people were accused of ridiculous crimes and tortured as a result. That is... not what happened to JK Rowling. To suggest that her situation is analogous to that in any way tells me all I need to know. No thanks.
No joke:
@FOXBaltimore
literally showed footage of the 2105 Baltimore Uprising and claimed it showed people jumping on police cars in Fells Point last night.

#boycottsinclair
The lies and awful journalistic practices are almost too absurd to believe. In the "news" story about crowds they say there were "young people jumping on police cars" at 2am and show video *from the 2015 Baltimore Uprising*, saying "that's the video here":
Literally anything good that happened in MD during Larry Hogan's time as governor - education funding (Kirwan), protecting reproductive rights, paid sick leave - happened over his strenuous objections. He is a total failure.
Spoiler alert! Democrats in Maryland voted to override Larry Hogan's veto of paid sick leave in 2018. When you're sick and need to stay home from work, thank a Democrat! Now you don't have to choose between your physical and financial health!
The *only* person who died during the Uprising of 2015 was Freddie Gray, and he was killed by police.
It was not remotely "the worst violence in Baltimore... in 47 years," but our racist gov propagates that racist narrative to sell more prosecution, policing, and incarceration.
Seven years ago, Maryland faced a difficult chapter in our history when the worst violence in Baltimore broke out in 47 years. I will always be grateful for the courageous response of law enforcement, first responders, national guardsmen, and the people of Baltimore.
2020 COVID deaths in Baltimore: 626
2020 homicides in Baltimore: 332
Alec MacGillis has been using his massive platform to downplay COVID-19 all year. And he’s terrible at predictions.
Prediction: two American cities will lose more residents to homicide than coronavirus this year, and those two cities will be Baltimore and St Louis.
Which will both be good news and terrible news.
Counterpoint: Remember me as a 'corrupt, racist cretin who cancelled the Red Line, Baltimore's best opportunity for transformative change in at least a generation'
Between insisting on an in-person election despite public health experts’ unanimous opposition and now preventing jurisdictions from closing schools to protect teachers and students,

Ageism and entitlement are absolutely real, they’re just not particularly right-wing. They’re universal. This meme reeks of soccer mom liberalism.

The Lady in the Lake story and the Banner/WYPR's youth-carjacking panic piece are two examples of fake news stories that perpetuate false/incomplete narratives about Baltimore. Local media should work to correct/complete those narratives, but too often they take easy way out 1/2
It takes some next-level racism to boycott a team because they *stopped* using a racial slur as their nickname... (btw, this is a Maryland state Senator 🙄)
@MarkHarrisNYC
It’s even more amazing that his sexual identity seems to be barely mentioned in the press, even right wing press. It’s gone from disqualifying to practically a non-issue overnight...
Good for

Attention Baltimore media: This asshole has 1.8 million followers. Daily Mail has 2.1 million daily readership. This is what happens when you uncritically publish police lies without skepticism. This is killing Baltimore.

A news release from Customs and Border Protection in Baltimore lists the final, official weight of last week’s record-breaking cocaine seizure in Philadelphia as 39,525 pounds—nearly 20 tons—value $1.3 billion.
@wjz
Does Sinclair 45 think there should be a police officer for every person walking around Fells Point? 🤔
More importantly, why isn't every public official and advertiser calling out this nonsensical, patently racist campaign to villainize Black people for... walking in public?
The first half of 2024 in Baltimore ended with 89 homicides, the second fewest to start a year on record (since 1970). Just two years ago saw the worst first half on record, with 179 killings.
That's a two-year drop of more than 50 percent
infuriating. Hogan’s racism is deadly.

Wow. It would be one thing to say “the findings are inaccurate” or “I need to do more to research,” but to acknowledge that the findings are accurate - whole schools with zero basic English and math skills - and say you’re “not concerned” is really something from a publ official.
I'll be saying it over and over until I die: Cancelling the Red Line was one of the most awful, racist decisions any politician has made in my lifetime.
#CancelHogan
Imagine shooting 30 seconds of mostly Black people casually hanging out in downtown Baltimore and calling it an “issue” on Twitter. Sinclair Fox45 is so racist they don’t even make sense.
Serious questions for
@ivanjbates

Is anyone breaking the law in this picture?
“Holding people accountable” for WHAT?
Why are you buying into the absurd Fox45 narrative that people gathering in public spaces is illegal?
I know and have worked with a LOT of activists in Baltimore (I'll include a list of some of my favorites at the end), so when I saw this list of of "Activists" in the Sinclair

Why is there a need to "both sides" everything?? I see a bonkers 80-90% shift among GOP and basic stability, with a predictable 20-30% shift for Dems.

Um, this guy, and pretty all the white terrorists responsible for mass shootings, come from your side of the "political spectrum"...
@EricRWeinstein
Black people invented the Blues *because* of the US, because of its brutality, its oppression. “We” don’t get to take credit for it. I’ve never heard of a so-called “Blues fan” so clueless about its history.
You crushed economic opportunities for thousands of Baltimore City residents when you cancelled the Red Line, gave back $900M in federal funds committed to the project and re-directed $2B in committed state funds to build highways for your white base, you miserable racist fuck.
The window for bipartisanship might be narrowing, but it’s not too late to change course. As we move onto infrastructure, we can’t let it close completely.
With everyone waking up to

100s of interactions - to and from work every day for yrs - and I've only given $ a handful of times (I rarely carry cash). I've NEVER had a negative experience. Please consider that sharing unverified, single-perspective, anecdotal stories put these young people in more danger.
What have your interactions with the

“A group of BLM”?
You mean protesters? There wasn’t a protest yesterday. We were on the scanner & heard nothing of the sort of incident you mean, fwiw. We heard of adults trying to fight squeegee kids, if that’s what you mean?
@andreanatalemd
Sir, your daughter's name is Veronica, yeah? See I archive police radio in Baltimore. This appears to be audio of your daughter's incident, and either she or you are full of shit.
You’re a racist and a fool. This is a "Blue Lives Matter" flag. There are no such things as “blue lives.” People can choose whether or not to be cops. People can't choose to stop being Black and disproportionately targeted by police. The “blue lives” movement is inherently racist
We are proud to hang these Thin Blue Line flags in Government House to honor our brave law enforcement officers. A local elected official prohibiting police from displaying a flag given to them by a grateful child is disgraceful.
I have nothing against any of these people - like I said, I had never heard of any of them until I saw this poll. But shame on Sinclair's "Baltimore" Sun for ignoring the hundreds of activists working tirelessly to improve the lives of Baltimore City residents TODAY.
@LarryHogan
Hogan has totally abandoned Baltimore - cutting school funding, killing Red Line, shifting funding to projects around the state (link). This disinformation campaign is very Trump-like and leaves me more motivated than ever to work to elect

People in Baltimore have come to think it's normal to have police in schools. It's not. When I tell people in other parts of the country that we have police in schools, they're shocked. Just another way we routinely criminalize Black and Brown kids.
Just a reminder: most schools in the U.S. don’t have police officers on site. We mainly see police concentrated in schools serving Black kids ()
Great move by the school board in Chicago.
“Eek” is right - the Sun’s new “criminal justice reporter” has started her tenure by parroting the police talking point that law enforcement has the right to surveil innocent people released pretrial and says it’s “strange” that they aren’t notified when defendants are released.
My first story
@baltimoresun
(eek!) is about a strange, longstanding loophole that means Baltimore police aren't notified when city defendants — even those accused of serious violent crimes — get released on bail. State lawmakers are trying to change that.
