The husband of basketball coach Christina Mauser, who was killed in the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash, spoke about his wife in a heartbreaking interview on
@TODAYshow
: ‘She was extraordinary’
Congrats to RBC's Quenton Nelson on being the highest NFL pick in Shore history at No. 6. He and Knowshon are the most talented high school players I ever saw from this area. An absolute relentless wrecking machine. Andrew Luck just breathed a little easier.
Long Branch goes for 2 and the win and hits it! Wilkins to Elijah Sherin for a 43-42 win over Freehold in OT for LB's first state title in 18 years. INSTANT CLASSIC
Freehold QB Ashante Worthy ended the greatest single statistical season in modern NJ history with 271 yds rushing and 6 TDs plus 141 passing. He finished with NJ single-season records for rushing (2,860), combined TDs (61) and total yards (4,966).
@bokamotoESPN
Please God no more. It's diminishing returns with every McGregor PPV. Khabib 4th round, Poirier 2nd rnd, Poirier 1st rnd. He might get knocked out right after the intros by the next one.
Devastating to hear the Navy SEAL candidate who died during Hell Week was Manalapan's Kyle Mullen. I interviewed him a lot during his career, he was like the perfect kid. Shore Defensive Player of the Year as a DE, great personality, honors student. He was on his way to greatness
Keith Kirkwood didn't even play football until giving it a shot as a senior at Neptune. Now he gets a chance to earn a roster spot as a WR catching passes from Drew Brees on the Saints. Pretty amazing.
The combination of a knee injury + the Olympics being postponed had a silver lining for soccer star (and NJ legend)
@CarliLloyd
, who reconnected with her family after 12 years apart. Spoke to her about that, the Tokyo Olympics and the future of her career.
A year after playing for Ocean, Kenny Pickett is out here slinging it for Pitt against The U on ABC as a true freshman. All the opposing Shore coaches raved about his potential last year.
A little school in Tinton Falls that no one ever heard of until 4 years ago is now the first Shore boys team to win the TOC and 1st to finish No. 1 in NJ since probably '85 CBA or '83 RBR. Huge congrats to coach Tahj Holden & the Panthers. Shore immortals
Final: Ranney 67, Bergen Catholic 63. Ranney is the 1st Shore Conference school to win a Tournament of Champs. Scottie Lewis 20 points and 11 rebounds, Bryan Antoine 17 points, Phil Wheeler 14 and 6, Ahmadu Sarnor 13 and 6.
Coaches are going to be using this Jalen Hurts story for years. Could've quit, could've left, could've put himself over the team, but he stayed and had this moment.
This is a HUGE loss to high school sports coverage in NJ. Gregg has given athletes great memories from their careers for decades and is an even better person I am proud to call a friend. Wherever he lands will be a better place for having him.
Sad to share that Friday is my last day working at
@News12Varsity
. But want to say Thank You to everyone who I've covered, worked with & come in contact with over nearly 30 years covering HS sports. You have enriched me & I wish you all the best.
Absolutely awful to hear about the death of Donny Klein, a former Manasquan star who was an assistant at TCNJ. He was previously an asst. at Squan and always a guy I looked forward to talking to on the sidelines. Just terrible news
Great moment for Rutgers-bound Wall senior wrestler Rob Kanniard, who was honored at half after winning the 160-lb state title over the weekend in AC. Finished as the Shore's all-time wins leader.
Salute to Manasquan's Michaela, Marina and now Dara Mabrey. Three siblings all scoring 2,000 points in their careers is absolutely bananas and a record that is hard to imagine ever being beaten. People will look at that 20 years from now and refuse to believe it's true.
I feel terrible for Manasquan. That was an all-time upset. Put an asterisk next to Camden's Group 2 title if they win it. Great photo by Ray Richardson of Squan coach Andrew Bilodeau giving the justifiable "Are you $##*&@ kidding me?!" face to the ref
“They huddled up and 15 kids got screwed in front of 1,000 people. Print that. Print it five times.”
Recapping the surreal scene at Central Regional, where Camden erased a 13-point 4th quarter deficit, Squan won it at the buzzer, then had it taken away.
It's bedlam at Borden Stadium as Danny Cook comes up with an INT in the end zone on his own tipped pass with 49 secs left in the game to seal a 35-28 win by Rumson!! Bulldogs are headed back to the Group 2 final
I'll never understand why there's so much attention paid to Rutgers basketball in NJ when Seton Hall has been a better program since literally the mid-80s. Giving Nova a dogfight right now.
Holmdel's Timmy McDonnell survived being in coma after being hit by a drunk driver. He couldn't walk or talk. Nearly 4 years later, he returned to the basketball court with his old Hornets teammates and did something magical on Thursday night.
This *alleged* case of the superintendent pooper has *allegedly* been going on since August. This guy was the Bigfoot of stealth shitters. It took 9 months to nab him. I need a full Dateline special on this.
Congrats to Ranney's
@BryanAntoine_
on becoming the Shore's all-time leading scorer. The most incredible thing is how efficient he was in getting the record. He was never a gunner and did it as a team player in the framework of the offense. Villanova is getting a Shore legend.
Ashante Worthy also passed Middletown South legend Knowshon Moreno (6,264) to finish his career with 6,400 yards rushing, which is No. 2 all-time in the Shore Conference behind Keyport's Ken Cattouse (6,676).
While settling NJSIAA football titles on the field is great, I for one would like a return to the pre-1974 system of getting a group of local sportswriters in a room with a bunch of whiskey and cigars and hashing it out until a team is declared a champion by sheer drunken opinion
Jose Altuve winning MVP is good news/bad news for youth baseball coaches. Part "see you can do this" for undersized players and part every nightmare sports dad thinking his unathletic scrub 5-6 kid can be an MLB MVP.
The first Shore Conference football media day today at Monmouth University was a great event. Smart idea by the Shore Conference leadership to create it, and a fun way to get everyone excited for the season. Looking forward to covering it with
