Beware Illegal Pesticides.
If you can only find it in the internet, it’s likely not a legal pesticide. And that include bacillus thuringiensis and neem oil.
Dear Councils.....
Can we just agree that cutting down grass that’s rich in wild flowers and therefore a habitat, and supporting climate and ecological emergencies isn’t essential work?
In fact it’s essential it’s NOT done!!
Do you know what really upsets me?!?
New gardeners who think they’re failing if they don’t sow everything from seed….
Liberated one today by admitting to buying veg plugs and seedlings for some things!!
There is zero shame.
Oh I almost forgot!!
SLUG PELLETS ARE BANNED FROM TODAY!!!
Hooray.
And the answer to your question is biodiversity in the garden, beer traps and physical barriers!!
Just had a bloody heartbreaking conversation with someone who has carved a tiny garden space for their family but regularly gets told it’s not a garden, it’s not properly planted etc, making them feel unwelcome in the gardening world. And that gardening is judgey and privileged.
If Truss thinks standing up for nature and fighting for social justice and being anti poverty makes me part of an
#antigrowthcoalition
, then frankly I’m in.
Well that was a bit of a day.
We both have parents in hospital.
I’ve been cleared as cancer free.
And all I can say is, thank f**ck for the incredible folk in the NHS.
1 more op and 5 yearly scans but I can cope with that.
What a year........*takes a deep breath*
I am constantly horrified by the privilege of gardeners, nursery people and designers who appear to think their work is more important than the natural world. And will say anything for publicity
#peatfree
Just a reminder, we don’t all have the capacity to sow everything from seed. Buying small
@plants
and plugs doesn’t make you any less of a gardener
#shoutyhalfhour
#GardenersWorld
“There are 22 million private gardens in the UK. So just imagine if most of them were insect- and wildlife-friendly. That would really make a difference. It would be kind of a national network of little patches of miniature nature reserves.”
Good morning world:-))
On the day after we learned that the climate warmed by over 1.5 degrees last year, all I’m going to say is that this is insane for any garden centre to look like!!
And yet most do!!
Well f*** me.
The “what you must sow in January” posts are already starting.
So let me just say, after 30 years in the business of growing plants of all types, there is NOTHING you need to sow in January.
Respect the seeds and wait.
First sowing date here will be mid Feb
Good morning world:-)))
Exhausted. Mental health not ok.
Longing for just a moment of normality.
Not looking for sympathy, just saying in case anyone else is struggling. You’re not alone.
Good morning world:-))
Following yesterday’s scare the anxiety is back but tea, the garden and the bees are calming me.......
Gardens are so important for health.
#mytinygarden
Plastic grass-an environmental disaster that should be removed from sale. It stops any chance of true habitat formation, doesn’t do anything to support the climate emergency and is being found as micro plastics in our water courses.
Rather than complaining about a lack of tomatoes and cucumbers why not eat seasonal produce that there’s plenty of?
And why can’t the media ask that rather than doom and gloom?
Good morning world:-)))
Has anyone else noticed there seems to be a huge amount of ladybirds about?!?
Is there enough for them to eat?!? They’re certainly very busy 😉
Today my incredibly brave adult child became his true and authentic self, a transgender male, named Noah!
I am beyond proud of his courage, and will forever be his, and any other trans folx ally, friend, supporter and safe space.
So if we’re going to put £620 million into funding peat land restoration and tree planting, isn’t it time the horticulture industry acknowledged it’s time to ban peat now?
#peatfree
So today, 17 years ago, that bastard cancer took my mum.
Feels like 17 minutes ago today.
Thank goodness for friends and the garden and beautiful plants.
So tired of people whining about face masks. Just wear one-you’re not wearing it for you, you’re wearing it to protect your community. And frankly if that’s an issue, maybe take a good long look at yourself.
Good morning world:-))
So today is
#WorldKindnessDay
......
A ‘day’ that perhaps we might all celebrate, without consuming but by gifting a smile, a moment or a hug because you never know the difference that might make.
So let’s sprinkle some kindness everywhere we go!!
Good morning world;-)))
Happy Halloween 🎃
Today 18000 tonnes, enough for a bowl of soup for every UK resident, will go to landfill.
Let’s stop this!! Eat it in pies, stews, preserves, cakes....
Compost the waste!!
Don’t send it to landfill!!
#zerowaste
Good morning world:-)))
#TweetersFlowerShow
today-recycling in the garden!!
So here we go-a garden totally made from recycled pallets and wood, and where plants are grown from saved seed and propagation.
Fighting environmental vandalism with more environmental vandalism. It might only be lawn, but it’s still a green space. Come on
@XRebellionUK
-this delivery is dreadful.
Good morning world:-)))
My favourite urban tree is this stunner located in a tiny square in Bath…..
All around her is the hustle of tourists, shops, change and still she stands calm and magestic…..
Happy Friday.
I absolutely hear
@RacheldeThame
Our gardens are our sanctuaries when we are unwell, and being in the garden is as important to our health as gardening. I do not know where I’d be without mine right now.
#shoutyhalfhour
#GardenersWorld
I genuinelyhope viewers gardens become a regular part of the show as it progresses. It’s been so awesome to see such a diverse group of folk who share one thing-a love of gardens, gardening and plants!!
#ShoutyHalfHour
#GardenersWorld
Yet again I’ve just seen suggestion that people accessing food banks should be sent to community gardens to learn to grow their own.
People in crisis need support not added pressure!!
And there’s no such thing as food poverty. It’s just poverty.
FFS
I’m just going to say that as someone with a Jewish heritage, the fact the fascist flag is being openly used in London in 2020 seriously makes me shudder.
If your not angry, you’re not paying attention
So plant more trees for sure but also let’s really look after the trees we have. Stop chopping old trees and their ecosystems down in the name of development.
And where we plant, ensure there’s maintenance in place!!
Good morning world:-)))
As we head into Halloween can we just all remember pumpkins are food!!
Carve them, make pie, soup, muffins, or feed them to the birds!!
But don’t put it in the bin!!
Deeply disturbed by the privilege of people ridiculing those who will continue to wear a mask…..
What everyone needs to remember is the clinically vulnerable are still at risk.
Especially if self isolation is stopped……
#Masks
When will we stop vilifying nature?!?!?
Aged 5 I knew not to touch any plant I didn’t recognise-so most plants-not because they were dangerous but because the ecosystem needed them. Ffs
I’m sorry but the big gardening industry is behaving just as they did in 2011 when a compost rep told me there’d be no ban on peat extraction, and the industry would ensure that.
To call Monty ignorant is rude. To suggest the industry is going its best is bullshit.
Good morning world:-)))
Off for a wee operation today as the last part of treatment for skin cancer.......
Not going to stop saying this.
Wear SPF. And no it doesn’t stop Vitamin D take up.....
First new deep coalmine in UK for 30 years gets go ahead. Surely this is the biggest backward step? We are never going to be carbon neutral with decisions like this. It’s nuts
Feeling completely overwhelmed by assumptions that we all should be going to pubs/restaurants/meetings/shops etc.
Just an FYI-I’m staying as we were till I’ve had jab2, and then won’t be doing anything that doesn’t feel right. Coming out of
#shielding
is hard.
Half a million trees have died next to one 21-mile stretch of road, National Highways admits.
No maintenance plan means no establishment. Basic horticulture.
Honestly I despair
*sighs*
I’ve been asked what someone can do about leafcutter bees munching on roses……..
I don’t think my answer was quite what was wanted but it was *celebrate your ecosystem*…….
Good morning world:-)))
There seems to be a question over germinating seed in
#peatfree
soil.
Well I just want to say poppycock!!
And show you it’s 100% possible, and in fact very simple.
@PeatFreeApril
Whilst Twitter snipes at each other, strengthening divides and failing to create anything positive 2 things strike me.
Firstly our world is in fire and needs us to look up and take action.
The Twitter gardening and nature communities buck the trend with kindness and love 🌍 🔥
Not all heroes wear capes 😭❤
A koala suffering from soaring temperatures and dehydration in Southern Australia approaches cyclists for water 💔
Australia is buring!
As you may have heard on
@BBCr4today
, Nigel often stole the show when we were filming with Monty at Longmeadow. Here's one of our favourite clips from a couple of years ago 🐾
#GardenersWorld
#RIPNigel
Listening to
@DrAmirKhanGP
makes me realise we have to fight for gardens, in planning policy, and whilst it might be impossible to create gardens for all homes, we need to make sure grassroots led community gardens are part of policy.
#shoutyhalfhour
#GardenersWorld
Good morning world:-)))
Happy new year to everyone and thank you to everyone for the ongoing support and friendship.
Hears to another year of gardens, growing and community!!
Good morning world:-))
Not gonna lie-been through 48 hours of hell but.....
All clear!!
So I just need to say thank god for the
#NHS
, for the wonderful folk at
@macmillancancer
and to
@NorthBristolNHS
in particular who are the kindest folk.
So time for just a bit of honesty…..
Covid has floored me. The symptoms are still up and down and my mental health has taken a hit. Just as busy begins to get busy…..
No sympathy required but just a reminder.
Covid is still here and biting.
I can not describe the power of my garden in calming my anxiety.
Literally going from hair tearing and feeling like I’m going insane to tranquility in 3 steps and several deep breaths.
#shoutyhalfhour
#GardenersWorld
Hundreds of trees to be felled for Cambridge bus route to tackle climate change……
I’m sorry but what now?
Trees that feed people, pollinators and likely are entire ecosystems in themselves?
This is literally displacing nature……
Good morning world:-)))
Gloves, mask, hat, hand sanitizer, secateurs, hori hori, water, tea......
SPF 50 on......
Stepping outside for the first time in 16 weeks.......
Can’t wait to be in this space
What we need in life......
Fresh air, water and food.
Family.
Friends.
Health.
None of which can be bought in a
#blackfridayuk
sale.
Let’s look for
#kindness
and just buy what we need!!
I wonder at what point we’ll accept that nature, is, might be about more important things than wealth.....
Like the health and well being of everything and everyone we share the planet with.
Ffs.
Shall we have some flowers?!?
The Nigella are off, the scabious are stunning and the dahlias are starting to do their thang!!
#FlowerFarming
#GrownNotFlown
Applause today to
@waitrose
in Keynsham who have included Mahonia in their car park hedging and pruned it at the right time to allow flowering!! Even car parks can be designed to support invertebrates. The flowers are so important for winter flying insects.
Good morning world:-))
Today will look like this but add in a lot of tea!!
Food growing for a local community in a lost, unloved space brought back to being both productive and beautiful!!
Well wow. So so so sad to see racist comments around last nights awesome
@GWandShows
Just as a thought, if you wouldn’t say it to people IRL, don’t say it on social media.
And in this case, if you would, have a word with yourself.
#shoutyhalfhour
#GardenersWorld
Visited 2 large garden centres today.
Stood in both horrified at the amount of tat, but also the shock of unseasonably flowering plants!
Lavender, hydrangeas, scabious all in full flower!
And lots of almost dead tomato plants!!
Cathedrals to consumerism.
As it’s
#EarthDay
today, please
#gardeners
do one thing-go
#peatfree
!!
It’s one, simple thing that will support future generations to see a better, healthier world.
Good morning world:-))
This week’s
#NationalGardeningWeek
so I’m going to spend the week celebrating the joy of
#mytinygarden
, others gardens and gardening in general!!
Good morning world:-)))
Face to face teaching for the first time in 2 years today!!
Ca t wait to introduce new gardeners to ecologically sound growing.
Woke up this morning to hear the female presenter on
@BBCBreakfast
saying that tree planting would, and I quote,
“Please the vegans”.........
Why the hell are the BBC stereotyping like that?
Good morning world:-)))
Photos at Wilko yesterday. However much we kid ourselves that people are gardening organically........
Despite knowing that this is fuelling the ecological emergency.....
If people didn’t buy it, they wouldn’t stock it.
Whilst we mourn the loss of a significantly important tree can we spare a moment for the trees lost daily in the name of development.
Let’s not make this natures black square moment.
A short 🧵
