Thanks for all the book deal support! My 3 week-old assistant requires me to stay up most of the night so having your messages to read helps pass the time / keep me awake. It all sounds glam but this is my reality.
I have re-opened to submissions and am very keen to find a select few new authors I can work closely with. You can read more about what I'm looking for, here
I think we should all take the time to appreciate that to write any novel, no matter its quality, takes passion, determination and self-discipline and I respect that even if the manuscript is not for me
*Slush* pile statistics: in the past 12 months I've secured publishing deals for 8 authors who I signed directly from my slush pile. Rest came from festivals and recommendations. Moral of the story - I love finding new voices and you should query me (esp if UK based)!
#amquerying
It feels very surreal to be on this side of the deal but I am so excited to announce my debut
#BadBlood
is being published by the fantastic
@Phoebe_A_Morgan
thanks to
@mushenska
. You can also now find a sample of the opening chapter here…

@SarahHornsley
, previously of The Bent Agency and a 2019 Bookseller Rising Star, has joined
@PFDAgents
as an agent in the books department! More about the move here:
Today in my class at the gym they had a comp at the end of who can hold their arms out sideways the longest. I won & the guy next to me turned round and said ‘I guess that’s from holding all those shopping bags’. No, I just beat you.
When you fall in love with a submission the high of finding 'the one' is then closely followed by the dread of 'losing the one'. It's like dating all over again and it is very, very anxiety-inducing. Will they love you back!? It is also addictive.
Calling an author with news their book (especially their debut) is going to be published never ever *ever* gets old. One of the many reasons I love my job. Happy Friday all!
We had the most incredible day. I knew it would be amazing but it still managed to be better than I’d ever imagined. I think this little clip sums it up for you all
Sound the klaxon, I've reopened to submissions! Not only that but I am, in fact, hungry for them! I'm looking for commercial to book club adult fiction and inspiring non-fiction. More info on how to query me can be found here:
Hey Twitter, I would love, love, love to find both a fantastic historical fiction novel and a ghost story. So get sending / spreading the word please and make my summer great!
reading a client's manuscript and there's one line of dialogue that is four words in total and it STILL makes me cry. I'm on my third read of this manuscript and I honestly can't get past that line without crying
Heading into 2019 with a new name, I'm now Sarah Hornsley.
You can query me at hornsleyqueries
@thebentagency

How very exciting.
If you've already sent a submission to manningqueries then do not fear, the inbox is one and the same so (please) no need to re-send!
Seeing as it's Halloween, maybe it's appropriate to make this suitably scary (also exciting) announcement today...
From 14th December I will no longer be Sarah Manning but Sarah Hornsley
Congratulations to The Bookseller

Class of 2019! 🎉 See who's made this year's list of the up-and-comers and future leaders of the book industry here: 🌟
Two days ago our family gained a beautiful addition and our hearts doubled in size. Welcome to the world Florence (Florrie) Olivia Hornsley, our littlest girl 💕
I know it’s said a lot on here, but it really is true that calling a client to say their debut is going to be published is honestly the best part of this job. November
#dealsdealsdeals
I love finding new authors and so here's my updated
#MSWL
! Contemporary women’s; rom-coms; high concept crime & thriller; horror; historical fiction; feminist fiction & non-fiction; compelling memoirs; popular science.
So, so pleased to announce that I've signed
@KateFirth3
who has written an enchanting novel called THE BOOK OF WHISPERS. It's The Trouble With Goats and Sheep meets The Night Circus, and frankly it's absolutely wonderful.
#TBA
Two months of Florrie and she’s already changed us and taught us so much. We unexpectedly recently spent 3 weeks in hosp with her and she’s our little champion fighter. Don’t save all the good things for later, you never know what’s round the corner.
Back to work today after the best few days in the Lake District. This time last week I was arriving at our venue getting ready to set up. Time is moving far too fast.
I’m unwell (sick, sinuses, chest infection... hello flu season) and I mentioned to Luke the only thing I could visualise trying to eat was an old school toastie w/ sealed edges. He only went and bought a toastie maker and brought me one in bed didn’t he
#neverlovedhimmore
At the end of this walk December last year, we got engaged — now it’s only 84 days (ok it feels sooner than it sounds, I admit!) until this man becomes my husband. Madness.
I've woken up with butterflies and I honestly can't decide if it's because I'm getting married in less than a week or because I'm reading an amazing full manuscript! Agent life...
I've been mostly offline for the past six months on mat leave but I am BACK! And raring.. mostly... to go! Also exhausted, overwhelmed and somewhat nervous... I can't lie... But I'm here and excited to be back working with my super talented clients.
I couldn't be more excited to have signed
@matildbattersby
who won this year's Lucy Cavendish Fiction prize. Her novel is poignant, gripping and so originally told. Watch this space 👀
I think one of my nerdiest habits as an agent is pre-ordering all of my clients’ books despite all the agent copies I receive! Maybe that’s where all my money goes...
Sending out more proofs of

Authors/industry folk please let me know if you’d like one! 🖤Justine’s childhood sweetheart is on trial for double murder. Can she really make the case against him? 🖤
We are excited to announce that applications for the PFD Mentorship Programme open today!! 📖🖌
Follow the link below for more information on the scheme and how to enter… Good luck!
So I'm back at my desk after what was meant to be a special holiday in Mauritius. But the four year old broke her leg on day 3, and I was subsequently struck down for 4 days with severe food poisoning. I need a holiday. Send help. And some future good luck.
Tidying the house as I head off to my mum & dad’s before the big day and came across this — the very first gift Luke ever bought me. Ballsy at the time but looks like he was right
I have four hours left of my twenties. I'm already in my pjs and ready for a cup of tea and season 1 of Walking Dead. Sorted. Am I definitely not turning 70?
Excited to have re-opened to queries today and I would love to hear from you! You can find out more about what I'm looking for and how to query me, here
SO delighted to have signed
@amydelaforce
who was shortlisted for the Lucy Cavendish Fiction prize this year for her historical art heist novel ILLUSIONS OF GRANDEUR . Amy's writing is wonderfully natural with evocative settings and characters you don't forget.
👀 I'M FINALLY AGENTED!!!!!!!!! ✨
SUPER-UBER-DUPER THRILLED to announce that I'm represented by

Sarah's passion for my novels, & all things

& historical, made her the perfect choice. 🥰 Time to make magic! 🖤🔥

We’ve had to stop reading books before bed because Hazel says ‘one more’ with her little index finger held up, then when I say no she shouts and throws herself backwards. I am proud, not going to lie.
Things I'm definitely looking for when reading submissions: uplifting women's fiction with tears along the way, slightly darker women's fiction in the vein of Liane Moriarty, high-concept thrillers, adventure YA, contemporary issue-led YA (& anything that's simply amazing!!)
2 weeks today I’ll be on a plane heading on holiday and I already feel emotional at the thought! Determined to make it a proper break. I haven’t had one in 2 1/2 years so I figure it’s long overdue. Countdown has begun!
Whilst coming back from holiday to 672 emails just before Christmas is...well let’s just say it’s not particularly fun.... it was certainly good for the soul. And well done / sorry to Luke for all the times I got us lost in the rain up mountains with Hazel on his back!
It's a day for press announcements! So excited to shout this one from the rooftops. LITTLE WHITE LIES by
@philippa_east
has sold at auction to the fab
@Charlo_Murs
and is the story that starts where others end, when Abigail White is returned home seven years after she disappeared
Heads up - I’m closing to submissions at midnight on 22nd November. If you've written a fantastic novel or have a wonderful narrative non-fiction proposal and think it might be for me, then please don't miss the deadline!
#amquerying
I was at a party last night and some London friends mentioned they have a book club. They ended the evening with a list of my clients’ books
#shameless
Jojo Rabbit is the best film I’ve watched in a long time. For a war film it just felt so original. Funny and heartbreaking in equal measure. Absolutely loved it and highly recommend!
As of today I am closed to submissions for a while but will re-open later in the year! Please know that any submission already sent to me will be considered.
It should be perfectly acceptable to set an out of office thats says, 'Back in the office today after being off unwell but only functioning at 75% and feeling sick again just looking at my inbox. Please be kind'
What can I say about this amazing book. I ugly cried.
@Bookish_Becky
is *such* a talented writer she makes me fall in love with my job over and over again.
#OneMoment
sold in a significant six-figure pre-empt to Grand Central (US) and is a HB lead title for Atlantic (UK) 🎉
I’m staying round my parents’ tonight in my old room and seeing my bookcase again (I have bookcases in my own house but have left this one intact for now!) has brought back very lovely memories. Here’s a snapshot of the top shelf with some very worn spines
I just sent
@Olivia_Beirne
an email gushing over her WIP and realise my level of unchecked enthusiasm perhaps tipped from supportive into creepy. Is that possible for an agent? We're supposed to love your books unashamedly, right!?
