Given this is a story about my family, it’s an honour to see our name on the cover. My parents came to Canada as refugees from Afghanistan 30+ years ago. I’m the first to graduate from uni, let alone med school and grad school. Every where I go, my family comes with 🙏🏼
@NEJM
Declined a speaking invitation for a corporation on racism and mental health because they don’t plan on paying me to do it. I politely stated asking WOC to present about racism to a predominantly white audience for a big corp *unpaid* is a form of structural racism in itself.
I am running a vaccine campaign in my family. It goes like this: “No vaccine, no touching my baby 👀”, followed by “dem’s da rules” and it’s working lol
Aunties have told me they got vaccinated because they want to hold our future little one 💉👶🏼
Everything is public health.
I have a loved one with schizophrenia. His illness began in his last year
@UofT
He was one credit short of graduating. Many difficult years later and finally on treatment, he took his final course. It was VERY hard. Today, he learned he passed. Best news ever!! 🎉🤩😭
I can’t believe there were 430 complaints submitted about the fact that Mary Simon doesn’t speak French. Do you know what language is more official than French and English on this land? Inuktitut.
God bless the TTC drivers who allow people to stay on the bus for the night. I have a dear family friend who did this for years when they were homeless…it was their only way to survive. They built strong bonds with certain drivers over time.
It is with mixed feelings that I receive the Young Leaders Award from
@CMA_Docs
. I am appreciative of this recognition. I am grateful to my nominators, which include mentors and learners. To be nominated in the first place by these wonderful people has meant the world to me. /1
The CMA is pleased to announce this year’s CMA Awards recipients. These 13 passionate and determined individuals are reimagining the future of health care. Congratulations to all! 👏
I had been feeling really down on myself for not being able to convince eligible family members to get the AstraZeneca vaccine. I sent one uncle in particular who can’t WFH audio messages on What’s App about the value of AZ. Today, he quietly sent me a pic of his vaccine slip 😭
@Thurka149
Whenever someone comments on my “funny name” (particularly my last name for patients), I say “(Insert their Anglo-Saxon name) is a funny name where my parents are from too 🤷🏻♀️” and they go 👀👀

Two teens walked into a coffee shop I was working at. They were wondering where to sit and they decided to sit by the windows because “it’s giving, it’s giving” they echoed to each other. What exactly it was giving, I do not know lol

Ejiz Choudry had schizophrenia and in response to a mental crisis, he was shot by police multiple times. His family begged to enter the apartment with them, to assist in de-escalation. This hits WAY to close to home for me.
Squeezed in my second dose at 38.5 weeks of pregnancy. Hopefully baby will benefit from an extra boost of immunity before he comes out.

What happened to Dr. Ben Thomson should worry all of us in medicine. We should be free to speak up about human rights, including those of Palestinians, without fear for our safety and our jobs. Please read.

are now offering vaccines for people age 50+ in high risk areas, defined as the following postal codes:
St. Mike's: M4X, M5A, M5B
St. Joe's: M6K, M6N, M8V, M9A, M9B, M9C, M9R, M9V, M9W
With that said, if I am truly a healthcare leader and if I have won this award on the basis of social justice and advocacy, then let me take this moment to lead by example and talk about Gaza. Something that I believe
@CMA_Docs
and everyone should be talking about. /2
Ramadan is around the corner. Now is a good time to check in with Muslim pts about their fasting plans (if any) and how to adjust their med timing outside daylight hours (if they prefer).
A simple Q like “Ramadan is coming. Is there anyway I can support you?” goes a long way.
There will be two barrier free vaccine clinics next week in downtown Toronto. No registration, no OHIP/ID, no address necessary. Just a name and DOB. All info in this pic.
(Not involved and can't take any credit. Simply sharing the good news🙏)
Scarborough is now offering vaccinations to people aged 50+ with a health condition. Patient has to reside in Scarborough or have a GP/specialist who practices in Scarborough.
Nice to see a prioritization of a hardly hit region of our city.

in Canada. This is an an act of solidarity for a valued physician/social justice advocate
@RitikaGoelTO
and to highlight the very tactics that make people feel afraid to speak up about the human rights abuses of Palestinians in medicine.
There is no “social justice” without speaking up for Palestine. Our healthcare colleagues in Gaza are living and working in unimaginable circumstances. There is no health under occupation. I hope that the CMA will do the right thing. I hope all of us will. /end
The year is 2022 and idk who needs to hear this (checks notes) oh wait, all of us do: when a Black a colleague shares their experience of racism, we shut up and listen.
I’m seeing residents misspell my name in consult notes, ED notes, discharge summaries, etc., and I’m not going to lie, it smarts a bit.
If in doubt about the spelling of a name, take a moment to Google, copy and paste 🙏🏼 It’s the collegial and culturally respectful thing to do.
Presently, there are no full functioning hospitals left in Gaza. There are few semi-functional hospitals currently. Where should Gazans go to receive care? For a summary and chronology of events, here is one from

I, along with many physicians and healthcare workers (HCWs) across this country, have watched with horror as Gaza’s healthcare system has been bombed, besieged and blocked from receiving medical supplies for the past 9 months. /6
Deeply disappointed at
@CMAJ
for publishing an islamophobic editorial about the hijab, in the midst of
#billC21
. How incredibly tone deaf. Have you considered the harm this brings to your Muslim colleagues and learners, especially those in hijab?
Today was my first day as a psychiatrist and clinician-investigator at St. Michael’s Hospital
@UnityHealthTO
. I will also work at Eva’s Place
@ICHA_Toronto
. Now that I’m employed, I should probably say: all (spicy) thoughts and opinions are my own 🤗🤗🤗
As a product of my cultural upbringing, I was raised to always express gratitude and to “be nice”. To not stir the pot. To be concerned about what "other people will say". To save face. That is why it is not easy for me to criticize the very organization that is awarding me. /3
Like so many other physicians across Canada, I have been shocked and dismayed by the silence from the CMA, who have yet to acknowledge the attacks on the Gazan healthcare system by Israel. This is in stark contrast to their statement on protecting HCWs and patients in Ukraine./12
Just wild listening to mom describe the similarities between Ukraine today and Afg in the 80s. She says the images of Russian military heli’s flying low over Ukraine brought flashbacks of when she saw Soviet ones over Kabul when she was a little girl. She can’t watch.
I have also watched with horror the attacks on HCWs themselves. Hundreds of HCWs have died as a result of the bombing. 5 mass graves have been discovered at 3 hospitals in Gaza, of which there are reports some bodies had medical badges on and others had medical tubes inserted. /8
And yet, I have also been raised to question the status quo. To recognize injustice. To stand up for human rights. To do the right thing. Therefore, in some ways, this is the easiest and most natural thing for me to do./4
Additionally, I am disappointed by the way the CMA failed Dr.
@yipengGe
as a learner. We have a responsibility to protect our medical learners from bullying and harassment. What he experienced was anti-Palestinian racism. /14
Yesterday I submitted a brief to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights in the House of Commons on the anti-Palestinian racism I experienced within the
@CMA_Docs
board of directors from their senior leadership.
I call upon not only
@CMA_Docs
, but every physician, HCW, and healthcare organization across this country to acknowledge the healthcare crisis in Gaza, to push for a permanent ceasefire along with the release of hostages from our respective government officials, to donate /15
Please don’t use the video of Afghans clinging on to that plane for dear life as click bait for likes and follows. Especially if you are not Afghan. Be intentional with your tweeting about Afg. Afg bodies have already been used and abused enough.
Pure joy seeing my friend’s brother at the Leafs game tonight - he won his ticket through a

Just sitting here, eating breakfast, in a country that banned a teacher for wearing a hijab at a public school, in the same country that mourned the murder of a Muslim family in London, ON just months ago…and everyone asked what they could do about anti-Muslim hate 👀👀👀👀
Roughly a year ago,
@UnityHealthTO
requested to interview me about my job as an outreach psychiatrist. I said I’d only do it if they included an allied HCP (bc doctors get too much attn and they’re the real MVPs). I love what I do. I love my job.

As someone whose entire family history and future was blindsided by a Russian invasion, it’s fair to say that most, if not all Afghans (both in Afg and the diaspora) feel so much for Ukraine. It lasted as a 20 year bitter and cruel war with the USSR, followed /1
From the nazi symbolism to the cancellation of a vigil last night in Ottawa to mark the 5th anniversary of the Quebec City masjid attack, we are reminded that wh*te supr*macy continues to reign, aided and abetted by indifference from those who hold power.
I started high school a year after 9/11 (at a Catholic school). My dad said I could hide that I was Muslim to protect myself from islamophobia. I ended up telling everyone I was Muslim from the moment we met. And then I wrote articles about islamophobia for the school newspaper.
I was thinking about

threw me a surprise Zoom graduation party with my family 😍 Everything that I am is because of my wonderful family, especially my parents. I love my profession and my specialty. Can’t wait to start my job as a psychiatrist ❤️
On weekend and stat calls, I buy the residents lunch (often sushi 😋) and we eat together. Yesterday, both residents thanked me at least three times for lunch, in person and via text. One resident thanked me again this morning 🥹 Buy your residents food y’all 🙏🏼
My search for a parking spot this AM for my OB appt led me right here. The news of the

hits in a deeper way as a soon-to-be mom, who is also a settler in Tkaronto and Turtle Island. I continue my commitment to truth and reconciliation in medicine and psychiatry.
Today, I went on a long walk with my little bebe to Koerner Hall/Philosopher’s Walk. The highlight was seeing a woman standing at the corner of Bloor and Bedford, holding a sign that read:

I waved at her and she said, “He called the police on homeless people.”

Hearing about Diana’s trust and the way Harry is using it to protect his family. That really hit me. God bless all the Moms looking out for their children, even in death 🙏🏼🙏🏼
My beautiful grandma just got vaccinated in Ajax ✨😭 I went from growing up with all four of my grandparents (such a blessing) to now down to just one. I want her around for years to come insha’Allah. I’m so happy ❤️❤️❤️

My mom is staying with us to help with the little babe for the first couple of weeks. One highlight is catching up on Bollywood movies with her every night as we take turns holding him ✨✨✨✨
My jobs before medicine included grocery store cashier, sales rep at the Gap, then Banana Republic (I miss the discount!) and then TAing undergrad courses. One summer, I worked all three. I was surprised to learn many of my classmates in med school hadn’t worked a min wage job.
If we want to train doctors that represent all Canadians, we need to think carefully about how requirements like the MCAT perpetuate inequality in medicine. I maintain though that all that time in the mall was better prep for my current job than clerkship ;)
There has been a letter circulating calling for the immediate removal of

During my Child STACER, I joked “Are bananas still 4011?” when my teenage patient said they worked as a grocery store cashier. I shared that I was also one when I was a teen. I passed my STACER but my evaluators told me that that was too significant a self-disclosure /1
In my first year of practice/supervising residents, I’ve made it a habit to send an email to their PD when I’m particularly impressed by a resident’s performance. I’ve done so a couple times this year and honestly, it takes a few minutes of my day but can mean the world to them.
An aunty filled out an eval form for a community presentation I did on youth psychosis (disclosed my personal experience supporting a family member with schizophrenia): “Dr. Saadia has two degrees, one as a doctor and one in real life. This is why she is for our community.” 😭😭
At breakfast ,
@MattBurkeMD
said “Big day today!” and I silently freaked out wondering if I forgot an anniversary or a birthday. “You get your Royal College results today!”
lol I completely forgot; I actively suppress that frustrating experience 🙈
Anyway, I passed! 🤪
I want to know that I can speak to any and all human rights issues around the world, including those of Palestinians, without fear of repercussions.

If you were disturbed by the murder of

It’s fascinating to hear radio show hosts debate what the sports protests are going to accomplish. It got you talking about police brutality and racism on the radio, did it not?
I didn’t expect this to blow up but I’m so glad it did. Many Black women in particular, both friends and people on Twitter, have told me they canceled their *unpaid* speaking invites about racism in various fields. They said they felt empowered by this simple tweet.
Declined a speaking invitation for a corporation on racism and mental health because they don’t plan on paying me to do it. I politely stated asking WOC to present about racism to a predominantly white audience for a big corp *unpaid* is a form of structural racism in itself.
Dedicated to my brother and my mom. Also to my patients affected by psychosis and their caregivers. Life has dealt you a difficult hand and I hope to be a part of the solution. Looking forward to a career dedicated to severe and persistent mental illness.
I remember when I posted about my first pandemic birthday last year and people laughed at the “first” part 👀😂

Drove by my parents’ house to see my mom for Mother’s Day and she did the most brown mom thing ever: give us a mini-cooler full of food to last us a week 🙈😂😍 This will give her one week of respite from asking me if I’m eating enough everyday (again, another brown mom thing).
