Personal experience but
Translators in Japan are treated like crap. The pay is shit, and we’re treated like second-class citizens.
Because they don’t understand the translation anyway, our work doesn’t matter. We’re barely credited, and always left out of industry gatherings.
Btw to the trash screaming diversity and saying it’s a dishonor to the Japanese or whatever
The Japanese creators and staff literally hate you. Fuck off.
Sincerely,
Someone who has worked in Japan in the anime/game industry for 11 years💕
I’ve been saying this for ages, but…
You might not agree with someone’s translation choice.
That is NEVER a reason to harass someone.
If you have a problem with the translation, you could learn the language and cut out the middleman?
The original work is the same.

Hey, I’m a casting director for Japanese VAs and producer in Japan. Ask me anything.
(Just know that a lot of questions might be answered with “sorry, that’s classified”)
Just so people know
I literally make “otaku content” (characters, scripts, casting, etc) in Japanese for a living, and I know at least some people overseas have enjoyed my work, though I’m not credited.
The industry is made up of lots of people.
Not just the ones you imagine.
One of my former co-workers once told me.
“Don’t pay attention to the complainers on message boards. They won’t buy anything anyway.”
I get what she was saying.
@magus_bride
“Unofficial translations are sometimes released for free and circulate as "pirated versions."
Noooot a good look to snap back at the people calling you out.
Hey, so I got a few new followers.
Hi! I’ve lived in Tokyo for 11 years, and worked at a number of places, including Frontwing and Bandai Namco. I’m a casting director and producer, and currently plan and produce Japanese voice actor events, live programming, and audio content.
Japan mainly only uses Twitter and Instagram, and Twitter is essential to my industry for promotion. We can’t move over to another platform. We literally just have to deal.
A little context:
Twitter isn't even in the top ten of social media platforms.
It's 237.8 million monthly active users is nothing compared to FB (2.9B), YouTube (2.5B), WhatsAp(2B), and Insta(1.47B), WeChat(1.26B) to name a few.
Btw just because trolls are saying this is what translators deserve.
It’s not just translators. ANY international job in the entertainment industry is treated that way.
Anyone with years of JP→EN translation experience who preferably has some kind of animation industry experience in Japan looking for a job? No promises but someone told me they’re looking for someone.
I can finally announce it!!
I’m a head of voice-related duties and promotion at NextNinja! In Japanese!
I cast voice actors, go to recording sessions, check voice clips, etc etc. I’ve wanted to do casting SO LONG. ;-; You don’t even know.
I’m promoting Touhou LastWord today!
My good friend and VA Saki Nitta passed away at age 32 last week. I went to her wake. Waterfall of tears doesn't even start to describe it.
The fact that so many people will never know how beautiful and talented and kind she was just rips out my heart.
Had dinner with my best bud Diana Garnet tonight at an avocado restaurant tonight!! She is so gorgeous and eternally youthful and fun and kind💕 Happy Birthday ladyyyyy٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶
(She’s an anisong singer for Naruto Shippuden among other things btw! Follow her~~~)
I remember being a recording with one of the Pretear seiyuu and I was like “Oh yeah I love Pretear btw”
VA was like “Precure?”
“Uh no, Pretear”
“Wow, that was a long time ago!!”
“Yes… Yes I know… lol”
Nice person ☺️
I quit my company I worked at for 2 1/2 years!!
Freedom!!
I’ll be doing basically the same kind of stuff at my new company
But totally WORK-FROM-HOME
HELL YES
Sure, I don’t agree with all other translators’ decisions. It’s an art, we all have our own style.
But like
Who cares…?
It’s not that big of a deal.
I like vanilla, other person likes chocolate. So what.
It’s actually one of the reasons I got into learning Japanese.
Kind of.
I was fascinated by the translation choices people made when comparing the two languages.
I got my first narration job in 5 years!
Most Japanese companies ban side jobs, so it’s so freeing to be able to do side work again😭
Thanks to everyone who has reached out about Japanese voice actor casting and narration recording jobs! I’d love to help anyone I can!
I remember when I told a fellow industry member (Japanese) I was finally doing my dream job of casting Japanese voice actors/actresses, their reaction was, “Why you?”
As in why is a foreigner casting JP people
Which is funny because I was actually rated higher than my colleagues
@RaraSensei
Yeah, sandwiches are amazing. Japan sucks at making them, though.
I bought a baguette at a bakery the other day and it was soft on the outside and tough on the inside.
I’m actually confused on how you would mess up baking that badly.
I love how the only foreigners that count as “having survived in the industry” are the people who stand in front of a crowd.
There are plenty of non-Japanese doing amazing things for the game and anime industry and we don’t need a mic to do it.
On-stage and backstage both matter.
Hey guys-
So it was my birthday today.
I have had a shitty year.
I actually lost my job!
But I am starting THE COOLEST NEW JOB next week.
Man, am I lucky for that!
Will actually be able to talk about it this time!
Thanks always <3
Hey game devs—
Have any games (especially multiplayer!) that you want Japanese influencers to spread and don’t mind having the videos monetized? Please get in touch!! We’re desperate for games to play.
(Thread)
So as some of you might know, I’m mad connected in the Japanese entertainment industry, bless these people who decided I’m worth their time. But the coronavirus doesn’t make it easy for us to make connections with overseas devs and companies.
(1/3)
Hi guys!!
So today, I’m starting my new jooooob!
I’m working at a game company, but my job might be a little bit different than you would imagine...
I can’t wait to tell you all! ( ´∀`) Stay tuned!
@ShedVolans
They’re a nuisance, and every Japanese creator/staff member I’ve talked with literally cringes when talking about them. They don’t understand why they would be so negative in bringing their work to more people.
One thing you learn first day on the job in translation is
not everyone has your experiences or level of knowledge.
You have to cater to the largest number of consumers.
@MichaelToole
@CanipaShow
I remember trying to apply at Crunchyroll Japan a few years ago and being told a super racist “you’re American so you should go back to America and work there” despite working in the Japanese anime industry for 6 years at that time.
Looks like I dodged a bullet!
Hi guys!
I've been running the FB mainly, but now that this is a one-woman operation, I'll be in charge of posting here too! I'll continue to try and make things fun for you all. Here's a pic of me with my Gardenia figure. <3
-Sarah
A big note to foreigners running photography businesses in Japan!!
You NEED permission from pretty much any establishment/park etc to do commercial photography.
Sometimes there is a fee.
Please follow the rules😭
-Someone who coordinates photo shoots for a living
Next year, I celebrate my 8th anniversary since coming to Japan!
Feels like yesterday I was in the taxi heading from the airport to my dorm...
Me then and me now.
Old photo (like 7 years ago?) of me and my bro. He’s apparently in the Netherlands, not working, living off of inheritance and volunteering at a dock/learning how to sail.
“Hey what projects have you done voice casting for?”
-Events
-Video games
-Live-streaming programs
-Drama CDs
-NFT characters
…But I’m not credited for 99% of it so I can’t say anything
So it looks like my career is nothing😢
Once again the year kinda sucked in my private life, but work was… ok?
Looking forward to finally applying for permanent residency and building a house next year.
So some people might know this, but I was bullied relentlessly throughout my school days.
I was called Jew, ugly, a freak, left out of every social event, had food thrown at me etc. Was so bad that honestly I‘ve mentally blocked it out.
I wish those assholes could see me now.👍
I have worked so damn hard to overcome the racial barrier of “only Japanese people can work on anime/games etc” that is weirdly in place still.
The people who are working on your favorite works are not just Japanese people.
Get over it.
Just so people know
I literally make “otaku content” (characters, scripts, casting, etc) in Japanese for a living, and I know at least some people overseas have enjoyed my work, though I’m not credited.
The industry is made up of lots of people.
Not just the ones you imagine.
So doctor’s like
“We gotta talk”
And I’m like
“Oh god is this the talk I’ve been dreading”
I get in the room, and he says
“She’s doing really, really good”
Like
How tough is my dog, seriously? 😭
She’ll stay one more day and then she’s coming home!
So apparently it has been exactly a year since I left my last last job.
Literally best decision I ever made in my life. Period.
I love my current company. I don’t talk about it much due to NDAs and whatever, but I’m doing Japanese voice casting for video games and other stuff.
The day has come for me to quit CyberConnect2.
Let’s just say the company didn’t fit me, or utilize me.
I’ll be taking a bit of a break before starting my new job. Stay tuned!
Picked up my Pokémon doughnuts at the Mister Donut for breakfast. The remainder I’ll eat tomorrow.
Btw the Pikachu’s cheeks are made of M&M-like candies, and the eyes are just chocolate.
Yesterday, my friend Yasunori Ebina threw me a surprise party and invited the cast of Lovedol, the anime that led me to voice acting in the first place. In attendance were Mai Nakahara, Sakura Nogawa, Minori Chihara, Haruko Momoi, and Kana Sakai. (Kotoha, Mizuki, Hina, Mai, Ruri)
@GaijinMommy
Of course, everyone’s autism is different, but my parents also thought I wouldn’t be able to live on my own (despite my stellar grades, but oh well)
I live in Japan on my own and work as a producer of entertainment at a really famous company.
I always wanted to be a Japanese voice actress!
Unfortunately it’s almost impossible to get a visa for that, so I ended up working behind-the-scenes. Initially in foreign-related work, but I fought my way up for equality.
@S_NelkinEN
Here's a simple question if you don't mind me asking.
Did you always want to work in Anime somehow, or did it just happen? Do you enjoy your work?
I would assume that being a "gaijin" in some situations is not easy, so I was curious!
Wow uh
Lots of people looking at my profile again.
Hi, I’ve been working in the entertainment industry in Japan for nearly 12 years. I’m currently a producer/original creator/casting director for a plethora of content, including audio, characters, and events.
I’m sure some people know this, but I was on a TV show for aspiring voice actors nine years ago!
Only two of these girls remained as VAs, and I’m still friends with them, and even casted them in a game!
I’m more in casting now, but it’s great to have such long-lasting friends.
So my dog Philo is being hospitalized for a sudden kidney infection.
She might not make it this time. She’s already 16. And I almost broke down in tears handing her over to the vet.
I know she can’t live forever, but I can’t imagine a world without her anymore.
@blockwonkel
To be fair, he’s been doing this for a few years now.
It started when he saw a tweet about people re-selling manga artist art boards they won through a present sweepstakes, something considered very rude. He was like
Hey, if you’re going to sell it, at least let me make money!
@GaijinMommy
I thought it was really funny how he was so xenophobic and then said “AND THEY DON’T EVEN LEAVE A TIP”
Dude
Why are you seeking a foreign gesture
But you don’t want them to be foreign
@_wholesomegames
・Despite being like 60 bucks, the game is over in 3 hours
・only real thing there is to do in the game is collect bugs, and even that is pretty boring
・The two mini games that do exist are shallow and boring
・Farming only gives you money to use on snacks, nothing of worth
Hi guys!! Thanks for the words of support yesterday.
There probably isn’t another non-JP person who wasn’t raised here doing Japanese voice casting and direction, so it’s a huge responsibility to have. Most companies will not let foreigners near voice production, except English.
For everyone wanting to work in the anime industry because they like anime—
I wouldn’t suggest it. You will never be able to enjoy anime again.
(Personal experience, but anyway)
I get really irritated when people post on social media looking for someone to rehome their pet because they’re leaving Japan.
Pets aren’t a toy, they’re family.
Customs can be a bitch, but it’s worth it.
Went out for wine with voice actresses/actresses/singers Kana Sakai and Haruko Momoi tonight! Everything they had to say was so interesting. <3 Such lovely ladies.
So I did the casting for a pretty important character in a HUGE game. I will probably never be able to announce that I did so. But I love this title so I’m SO STOKED. Can’t wait to see everyone’s reactions, and so proud to be a part, even if I’m not credited!
