This is literally the opposite of lazy translation. Instead of going for a stilted word-for-word approach, the translator found a snappy phrase in English that conveys the same exact meaning of the original, while sounding natural in the target language.

As a localizer I can't look at naked titties so I have to blindfold myself when working on ero content and that's why my translations turn out so woke. Sometimes I mean to type "pussy" but because I can't see the keys it ends up as "all property is theft" instead.

My #1 tip for improving your translations: Don't be shackled to the source text! Read the source, then think about how you would express the same idea in the target language, regardless of the specific words, grammar, and punctuation of the original.

I don't think a lot of people realize that it is often LITERALLY IN THE PUBLISHING COMPANY'S RULES that you must not attempt to contact the author of whatever it is you're translating. You can lose your job if you do!

The localization process should not be "translator does rough translation then editor cleans it up into something readable" 😭 A good translator is also a good writer! Please! Editors should not be doing that much heavy lifting, they're there to elevate the prose not fix it!

Today's translation tip: Never ever translate lines in isolation. The original writers don't write them in isolation. Each line relates to the surrounding lines and the rest of the text as a whole. You must consider this when translating.

Books I used for JLPT N1: 新完全マスター I used the 文法, 語彙 & 漢字 books, but they also have them for 聴解 & 読解. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. 新にほんご500問（日本語総まとめ series) Found it a little too easy but good for bite-sized study. 日本語能力試験　公式問題集 Practice test.

Here is an example of the kind of "localization" I use in my translations. The term デパ地下 means "the underground floor in a department store". But to a Japanese reader, it has a more specific meaning beyond the words "department store" and "basement".

I also dislike when people are like "there are lots of serious, non-ero VNs, therefore VNs are good actually". VNs can be ero and good, it's not mutually exclusive. Visual novels wouldn't be what they are today without the thousands of eroge that refined the medium.

Also, for some reason this is a controversial topic among translators, but I find it odd that the pay is generally a flat rate regardless of quality. It means there's no external incentive to improve, and you end up feeling like the joke's on you for bothering to work hard.

I hate that people demand "literal" translations. It takes SO much more effort to truly understand the Japanese text, then form equivalent but natural and eloquent sentences in English. I put a lot of effort into it. I'd have to try a lot less hard if I wrote more literally.

Some reasons why translators aren't in touch with authors: Usually it's not the creator asking for their work to be translated. The overseas publisher approaches the JP publisher about it. I don't know how much say the creators get over saying yes/no to a translated version...

No. Tanslation isn't about creating the product "exactly as it was" at all. Translation is about translating the source text into the target langauage and there are MANY different approaches to it that all fall under the umbrella of "translation".

If you ever see anything about a Japanese company having 6-hour workdays, 99% of the time it's not gonna be true. 9 hours is standard. Maybe some places will SAY their workday is 6 hours, but that's not factoring in the 4+ hours of basically mandatory overtime 🙃

Wow this is probably a new low for mobile otome games... Less than 1 cent per word for scenario writing. They're asking for the equivalent of a 200 page novella for $400. You would have to write SEVERAL BOOKS PER MONTH to earn a living wage in most Western countries.

This makes me so mad. I don't even think people should refund a game because they "didn't like it". Devs can't control whether or not you like a game; you're paying for a piece of entertainment media that someone worked to create, not a guarantee of enjoying it.

With translation, you need to think beyond the surface "word" and consider all the implications surrounding it (linguistically, contextually, etc.) in order to recreate something authentically similar in English. Sometimes this means using RUDE WORDS! 😱

Characters can still be casual, blunt, rude, or offensive, etc. in Japanese via their vocab and grammatical constructions, and as a translator you can employ things like slang and curse words to recreate this effect.

Some thoughts on localization: Regardless of how the word is used within gamer communities, the term "localization" is used interchangeably with "translation" within the industry. If someone hires you to localize a game, they mean they want you to translate it and vice versa.
