Judges are supposed to be neutral. Judges do not hire and fire prosecutors or criminal defense lawyers for wealthy executives. And judges shouldn't hire/fire defense lawyers for poor people, either. It's a conflict of interest. The FAIR Act fixes that.

To date, covid has killed more than 5 times as many Chicagoans as bullets have in 2022 - and so far the mayor's response is to 1) refuse to reinstitute mask requirements as we approach official CDC high covid risk and 2) take 8 hours/day of liberty away from 17yo

Will St. Louis be the next city to see a soft-on-crime public official kicked to the curb? That’s the question in St. Louis less than a month after our neighbors in Illinois gave Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot the boot, a lifelong St. Louis resident writes.

When we put children in cells and shroud those cells in secrecy - true of every single kind of youth lockup, w/ differences only in degree of control and isolation - we are saying that we are fine with it. That we cannot conceive of anything better. That we are morally bankrupt.

Thanks to this reporter for describing in detail that many young people did not want to go on the record due to the fear of targeted police retaliation. A lot of reporters think that reluctance means there's no story, but it IS the story.

“What we’re seeing from Mayor Lightfoot and Supt. Brown is the definition of insanity,” says @kalebautman . “The response of throwing more cops at the problem; we’ve seen [former Mayor] Daley do it, and [former Mayor Emanuel] do it. It didn’t work then.”

10 days after her speech, Mayor Lightfoot has now delivered her letter requesting that judges impose an unconstitutional moratorium on pretrial release. For those who do not understand why her request is both unconstitutional and bad policy +

And *none* of this would be known except that he was already being investigated for a third assault seemingly NOT related to his official duties. How could these victims possibly come forward when dealing with CPD is how they came to be sexually assaulted in the first place?

A Chicago police officer molested boys sleeping at his house and filmed it on separate occasions, prosecutors said. He met one boy, 13, when the boy's parents were arrested. He met another, 14, when the boy filed a police report. @chicagotribune :

Ask yourself why "crime" is considered the biggest issue in selecting the next mayor of Chicago. Is it really because of robberies and carjackings?

"The mayor will work with anyone who uses real data" is *quite* a quote, since the mayor's letter to the Chief Judge purposely misclassified more than 1,000 arrests for nonviolent crime as violent.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot rejected Cook County Chief Judge Tim Evans’ call to work together as part of a concerted effort to reduce violent crime in Chicago, saying the court system is making “Chicago neighborhoods less safe.” @wttw

I am so tired of hearing fearmongering about "murderers" being on pretrial release as if virtually every person in the City of Chicago did not know that Jason Van Dyke was sitting in his own house waiting for trial for first degree murder

I would like to hear more from healthcare privacy advocates about the pros/cons of ask #3 , but this is a good start and it is so important that *someone* is making meaningful demands of POTUS on abortion.

What does Chicago not fund when we spend $1.7 billion on policing? So much. But given the circumstances and the time of year, I'll mention, again, that youth in the city's summer employment program are not paid minimum wage.

No snark: National press should be paying real attention to the fact that various permutations of FOP, GOP, bail reform hawks, TradDems, and ConservaDems partnered up to try to win these races and were - to put it kindly! - obliterated. National Dems should pay attention, too.

Stop saying CPD has "staffing" problems when you mean "priority," "efficiency," or "management" [Note: I might update this chart since the Fall 2022 FBI report is likely out, but it is not misleadingly out-of-date. As of January 3, 2023, CPD has 434 officers per 100k residents]

Most homicides occur between people of the same race; about 2% are declared "justified" by investigators. But when a white person kills a Black person, almost 1 in 5 are declared justified -- *21 times* as often as when the races are reversed.

In our analysis of 400,000 homicides committed by civilians between 1980 and 2014, we found that killings of black males by white people were labeled "justifiable" more than eight times as often as others.

Today, the Chicago Police Department complained at a press conference that Facebook allows its users too much privacy. CPD believes that Facebook should cooperate w/ law enforcement, including allowing officers to create fake profiles to gain access to users' private groups.
