As the final WVU cuts are described it’s maddening to keep hearing about how Department Z failed to increase enrollment. That’s not the job of faculty. At WVU that falls under University Relations. It’s infuriating that 147 faculty will be fired but UR VP Sharon Martin will stay.

It’s often forgotten that WVU’s Gee, Reed, and BoG actually *paid* for the advice from out-of-state consultants that led to the decimation of the university and adopting ridiculous positions like learning world languages isn’t valuable in the 21st century. Epic mismanagement.

Before I came to FIU, I taught at @UNCG for a half decade. They’ve just axed three entire departments — anthro, physics, and religious studies. And surprise! They’re paying the same disgusting consulting firm (rpk group) that was behind the cuts at WVU.

“Clearly, a lot of people, particularly young people, are voting with their feet and leaving the state.” WV’s population decline is by far the biggest in the US. One of the oddities of the US political system is that there is no penalty for state failure.

This is pretty obviously a lie, and I’m begging the WV media universe not to treat Gee/WVU UR propaganda as fact. Doing that has led to the current mess at WVU. This merger, while it may make theoretical sense, is primarily about *cutting* resources that go to these missions.
