A child was shot to death less than 5 miles from the state Capitol last night. Kids stood in his blood waiting for their morning school bus.
Maybe our AG should look at the pain gun violence breeds in our communities before congratulating himself for a poorly timed culture war.
Well. My last day at the
@wvgazettemail
was supposed to be in two weeks, but that’s been moved up to TODAY.
I was just fired and escorted out of the office for publicly criticizing the decision to platform Don Blankenship while lobbing softball questions at him.
@postgrad_barty
Oh man. He told me the local Chinese food place made all their meat out of dog meat (racist and not true), I told him that’s a pretty bad opinion, he told me he’d considered eating his dog if it meant good Orange Chicken (concerning and weird!!)
Girl,
@rileywyantTV
, your fanbase is from Appalachia, your QB is from Charleston, WV and your alma mater offers an Appalachian Studies minor:
Read a book or two for your audience’s sake.
Every time I hear the argument that college students are young, healthy and don’t have to worry about COVID, I think of the friends I had who were cancer survivors and patients, who had lupus, were asthmatic, diabetic, etc.
These people aren’t disposable. It’s their school too.
There’s a story from me in today’s
@wvgazettemail
that I am incredibly proud of.
For the first time in a decade, residents in Keystone, WV have access to clean water.
Please humor a small 🧵 on why this story in particular is so important to me...
Kanawha County Circuit Judge Tara Salango just issued a preliminary injunction to stop WV from enforcing the pre-Roe law that criminalizes abortion. She said the law was “too vague” to be applied, story coming soon
Fascinated by WVU’s strategy of telling hundreds of faculty that their jobs and entire departments are on the chopping block and then expecting them to just…. stay quiet over the weekend?
Why would that have ever worked?
I don’t have it in me for needle discourse today.
I spent yesterday in McDowell County where folks are raising cash to open a community grocery store so ppl in our unhealthiest county can afford veggies.
There is a lot this legislature could do for public health if it wanted to.
There was a weird period between like 2015-17 in Morgantown where it was not at all abnormal to walk past SandwichU and see that guy screaming/throwing sandwiches at students or into the street angrily/going on weird social media diatribes
Gov. Justice: “Absolutely no one wants to get in the situation where you’re making wearing masks mandatory.”
I can think of a lot of people who want that actually
If Derek Evans is an “independent member of the media” then I am officially an elected member of the WV House, and I’m happy to announce clean water, safe housing and free birth control for everyone!
These are the rules now, sorry folks.
I Photoshop Babydog Justice into a different piece of art every day that I remember: Day 38 (today is my kickball team photo bc I had a great time with these Mamas)
Any media reporters out there who wanna hear the skinny on WV media, feel free to contact us and spread the word! Happy to dish honestly with whatever receipts I have.
Honestly stoked to be fired bc it’s given me something to focus on other than the fucking extreme health anxiety I developed covering health in WV for 3+ years on crap insurance
I cannot express how much this job hurt — ruined — my mental health. I will never be the same.
No better time than now I guess to share that I will be leaving the Gazette-Mail by the end of this year.
I don’t know exactly what lies ahead but I have some leads and will be staying in WV (duh!!). It is simply time for me to move on, and I’m doing so with a heavy heart…
Among bills introduced in the Senate tomorrow:
- remove Hep B vax from req school vax
- prohibit COVID vax mandate
- 80 MPH speed limit on freeways
- fetal heartbeat act (2!)
- parental notification for birth control
Seems it’ll be another slam dunk year for health policy in WV
Getting accused of being an “advocate” as a health reporter is strange.
It’s like, ah yes, you’ve caught me. I AM a passionate advocate for... *checks notes* ...people not dying preventable deaths?
Take out the cuffs, ya got me.
I know journalists are supposed to have tough skin, etc. but I can’t explain how difficult and disheartening the last two weeks have been for me, as people feel entitled to jump into my DMs and inbox and use me as a punching bag for their bigotry bc of my coverage of SOAR. 1/
I saw a story on Reddit a while ago about a guy in WV who said hunters in his town kept spreading rumors about a “giant turkey” on the loose that had talons that could kill a man and no one believed them until someone else saw it and had to explain to everyone what emus were
I am so excited to announce that, starting in July, I will be returning to journalism as a reporter with the brand new WV
@statesnewsroom
(name TBD)!!
I truly never thought a media job like this would exist in WV but I’m so grateful it does and that I get to be a part of it.
Today marks 4 years for me at the GM. I feel so lucky to be in WV and to have been adopted by a community like no other.
I’ve seen some of the darkest + brightest parts of this state. I love them all.
Here’s to making more memories in the place I call home. Thanks for having me.
This is DAY TEN that the Gazette-Mail has not been granted a question to the Governor. We have emailed others in the administration. We have called. We have left voicemails. We have filed FOIAs. Rarely do we get responses unless the law requires it.
Our readers deserve better.
Justice: “Amy, baby, listen .... if you can get the Legislature to go along with this and call a special session, I’m all in.”
Can’t imagine a governor calling a male mayor “baby” in front of the entire state
Staying away from Justice’s inaccurate and incredibly dangerous doubling down on the “needles everywhere” rhetoric in Charleston (started years ago by his own spox), this diatribe against Goodwin and Charleston is....... whoa
A "law and order state" where the highest law enforcement agency is under investigation by the FBI for a slew of abuses of power including sexual assaults, rapes, theft, etc. and where the smaller agencies across the state seem to continue to follow suit with no accountability 🤷♀️
West Virginia is a law and order state, and we support the men and women of law enforcement.
I signed a bill into law that makes obstructing a police officer on duty and causing their death a felony punishable by up to life in prison.

I’m upset, clearly. I’m also a bit relieved if I’m being honest. My editors didn’t even have a conversation with me before.
There was an 11 am meeting scheduled that I and a handful of others were not invited to. We then got pulled up to HR, where I was fired.
Some ~personal~ news: I’m incredibly excited to announce that in January I will begin work with
@FairnessWV
.
When I was in college,
@JackJarvisWV
basically taught me journalism (lol) and now I get to learn a whole new set of skills from him! It’s kismet!!
Thinking today about how if this were the WVU that emailed me to apply 12 years ago from 2,500 miles away, I wouldn’t have.
I likely never would have come to WV —a state I have fallen so deeply in love with and that has added so much to my life. It just makes me really sad.
Turns out this is my last byline in the Gazette-Mail! I couldn’t have asked for a better one. When I’m in a better state of mind, I’ll tweet more about it.
Thank you all for everything, always.
One of your constituents, a child, was shot to death 20 hours ago, minutes from the Capitol. His blood was on the pavement this morning when kids went to school.
Would you share this argument with KJ’s family today?
Our leaders don’t know what’s happening in our communities.
Unilaterally implementing gun control measures will make law-abiding Americans less free and less safe.
Ignoring the Constitution, Biden is forcing lawful gun owners to comply with an oppressive, ideological agenda.
#WV
citizens must be able to protect their families.

I was cleaning the litter boxes and Plum walked into the room holding a single dollar bill in her mouth.
Is this a tip? Payment? Where did you get the money? Do you have a job?
My first WV Day was the 150th.
If you told me then that I would still be here 8 years later, dedicated to this complicated, beautiful state with no plans to leave, I would have called you a liar.
It’s not always easy to love you, West Virginia, but I don’t regret a second of it.
There are more COVID-19 positive people in WV today (29,744) than there are total people in ALL BUT THREE of the state's cities and towns (Charleston, Cabell and Morgantown).
Hospitals are past capacity. A case peak is maybe, possibly, a few weeks out.
We are on fire.
Today marks one year for me at
@WV_Watch
.
18 months ago I had accepted that, if I ever wanted to work in news again, I would need to leave WV.
I’m grateful every day that wasn’t the case. Thanks to
@statesnewsroom
for allowing me to report and live in the state I love 💙💛
I am so angry. As a WVian, a former colleague of Amelia’s, a (former) reporter.
She does this work in a way no one else does with empathy and compassion. She got fired for that work.
Speak truth to power in WV and only YOU will feel consequences. We, as a state, deserve better.
Frances Tolley, a chem teacher at Hurricane High, said 30/1300 students are at school, and no teachers.
“We’re kind of emotional this year — we feel we’re out here without the county’s support, but we’re here for our kids. The community is behind us though, we know that.”
It is truly insane to think there are 5 fewer journalists working in Charleston today, less than a month out from what will certainly be a raucous legislative session, then there were a month ago.
Even more if you consider the departures at MetroNews and TV stations.
Over 10 mins today the Governor said he wished Phil’s train would get hijacked so he’d leave WV. He recounted every criticism and blamed Phil for WV’s failings. Just an absolutely unhinged tirade.
WV — and especially the Gazette-Mail — are better because of Phil.
Thank you all for the kind words and wishes. There is… so much I want to say. Things we’ve sat on for years to protect the image + legacy of the GM.
And after all that, Skaff couldn’t even fire us himself.
After all that, he *cried* + told remaining staff it could be worse.
Reminder to West Virginia legislators that the mics in front of you connected to the live feed 100% pick up the little things you whisper to each other
I’m sorry but Jim Justice *loves* to forget or almost forget the names of women, and ONLY women, who ask him hard questions on his pressers and it is disrespectful!!
A preview of the special section that will print in HD Media papers next week to honor the Blair Mountain centennial landed in the newsroom today, and reader, you need to pick this up on Sept. 1.
Sigh. I am starting my new year with COVID-19.
As someone fully vaxed/boosted, let me say the last two days have been hell - aches, chills, pounding headache, mouth sores (wtf!), no energy and so. much. brain fog.
I don’t want to know what this would be like w/o the vaccine.
