It worked super well because the sanctuary city concept is so transparently a virtue signal.
It’s easy to guarantee all sorts of rights when you don’t have any migrants.
Now the consequences of such policies are real.

The post is about why conservative humor doesn’t work.
But it does not appear to me that conservatives are culturally or politically ascendant.

Why wouldn’t the people in a community be best positioned to know what is best for children in that community?
Why is it better for people in DC to control what kids in Tennessee learn? Don’t people in those communities have the most skin in the game?
@ennui365
Becoming a nun is voluntary.
We aren’t bothered by women choosing to dress in accord with their faith.
We are bothered by theocracies imposing such practices by government fiat / force of their citizens.
Hope that helps.

Has Israel kidnapped non-combatants, and held them without process or trial, in violation of a (at least de facto) cease fire / truce?
If Israel committed the same actions as Hamas did in October 7, they would have been universally condemned.

This is, amongst the worst takes I've ever heard.
She goes on to claim that the Ukraine should wait it out and use democracy later on. She appears to believe that democracy is a free floating natural phenomena, and that Ukrainians will have it even if conquered and annexed.

Holy shit. Are you actually incapable of focusing on a simple question?
Me: we can agree the sky is blue, right?
You: incoherent screech about personal political ideology.
Seems unproductive to speak with you further. Happy to be proven wrong.

@MikeBlack114
This is clearly false. As even a quick google search would show. And that’s not even subtracting fighters from the Hamas provided total death toll.

Beyond the ask for credit (which is due) - why are we fact checking memes? *Hushed Tone* Did you guys know Pepe the Frog isn't a real frog?

Not an atheist but the following is not a religious argument.
Premise: there is such thing as objective morality
P2: We cannot know exactly when a developing human life acquires moral significance
Conclusion: we should err on the side of humility and limit abortion.

What does that have to do with anything?
The question is has the rate of inflation gone down since he took office. The answer is yes.
I get that you don’t like him. But that isn’t relevant to the point.

It is bad policy and likely unconstitutional.
It should not be permitted at any level -
And you would be foolish to think it would stop there if allowed.

We don’t have to agree if we like him or if it will work out long term. But can we at least agree on what the facts are to date?

He didn't so I will. The right to an attorney prevents the government from doing something (prosecuting etc.) without legal counsel. If you can't afford legal counsel, and they can't provide it, they don't get to proceed. It's a limit on government.

In this area the optics really matter because there is no true “merit based” way to pick a VP.
Say you are picking the best person - don’t bring up their identity.
That solves most of the problem.
Biden did the exact opposite which is a large part of the issue.

I’m trying to steel man Biden here and failing. What would the possible good motive for this timing be?

There seems to be a trend where explaining something is the precursor to excusing it. Which doesn't always make sense.
The guy who crashed into you was drunk, because he's an alcoholic, because he was born into a family which treated him poorly. Does that make it better?

That stat does not attempt to control for variables such as job title, hours worked, and more. Accordingly, it does not follow that it reflects equal work.

What does the Venn diagram between religiosity and wokeness look like. I predict a small overlap (in the US).
Then do that analysis again for secular college grads. Bet it’s enormous.
The correlation is noteworthy.

People are too all or nothing. JP has said many things that are true, valuable, and needed to be said. He's also said some crazy shit I couldn't disagree with more. I wish people interacted with the ideas more, and spent less time trying to pass judgment on the person.

And there was no welfare state / social safety net.
It’s the tension between those policies that makes the issue tough today.
You can’t have both.

Why not? Living alone is an apex luxury that was basically unthinkable for most people over most of human history.
Why is it now suddenly the baseline?

Good theory.
Another (from Thomas Sowell) is that the unconstrained vision of the left rests on a foundational belief:
That reasonable people should come to similar conclusions.
So when conservatives reject their world view, they must be unreasonable or insincere.

Identifying a predisposition is only useful if we can then do something to prevent that predisposition from resulting in harmful behavior.

Even if we assume 1 is true for the sake of argument - the original point of NATO was to provide a safe haven against Soviet aggression for states which wanted to move towards democracy and western values. That is something that the West should want to stand up for.

The Electoral College, contrary to popular belief, is a good thing actually.
This is going to keep coming up this election season.
I should write an article.
@ContraPoints
It would create a vicious cycle that destabilizes the rule of law.
If Dems push it to 15, then next time R’s win they push it to 30. Rule of law collapses.
Might be be worth reading the below - I tried to give a fair case for both judicial philosophies (in re abortion).
