Five years ago next week I took up hillwalking when going through a period of severe depression.
Since then I’ve averaged a Munro (a Scottish mountain over 3,000 ft) a week and today summited my 282nd and final Munro, Mòruisg.
Dark clouds always pass and life can get better. ☀️
“I’m so happy my fate brought me here to live in Glasgow where the people are so connected that they will come out onto the street to help one of their own.”
A great montage a fellow Twitter user very kindly put together to highlight all the influential people and world leaders Nicola Sturgeon has been meeting and engaging with on behalf of Scotland over the past couple of weeks. We are lucky to have her as our First Minister.

🎅🏻 No one should be alone on Christmas Day so if you’re in the Fife area on the 25th you’re welcome to join me on a socially distanced walk up Falkland Hill.
Will be starting from the East Lomond Mast Car Park for 9am. It takes about 20 mins to ascend so will be back down by 10.
Saw this this morning in Fife - a mental health campaign by farmers to encourage eachother to
#KeepTalking
and stay connected during the pandemic. 👏

David Mundell: “I reject that
@theSNP
myth that people were told that they would stay in the EU if they voted to stay in the UK.”
It’s not a myth it’s an absolute 100% nailed on fact.
⛰Thank you to everyone who came along for Mòruisg, my final Munro, today. It meant a lot!
We couldn’t have asked for better weather. 🙌
It’s been some journey the last 5 years! I have so much love for Scotland - what an amazing, amazing country we live in. 🏴❤️

Older than the Pyramids, Stonehenge and the Great Wall of China - and even Skara Brae - this is Knap of Hower, the oldest dwelling house still standing in North Europe.
It’s on Papa Westray in
#Orkney
and was the home of a farmer and their family from over 5,000 years ago!
If you notice a definite decrease in my Fife-related Tweets and a definite increase in my Orkney-related Tweets, you won’t be imagining it!
Tomorrow I start a new job based in the
#Orkney
Islands. Although I’ll miss home, I’m very excited to experience island life in Kirkwall.🏝️
I’ve been living in
#Orkney
for the past fortnight and, for anyone interested, here’s some photo highlights and pieces of interest/facts I’ve picked up along the way - very much for folk unfamiliar with the islands and would like to learn more. 🧵
Scotland: extend the furlough
UK gov: no
Wales: extend the furlough while we are in a firebreak
UK gov: no
*England needs to go into lockdown and furlough is extended*
Scotland: if we ever need to go into lockdown in the future will furlough be extended?
UK gov: no
BREAKING: Scotland could be forced to follow England into lockdown this month or risk going it alone without the UK’s full job retention scheme if national restrictions are required further down the line.
A furious row brewing!

Saying the SNP didn’t accept the result of the 2014 vote is a complete reframing of what actually happened. The result was entirely respected, but Scotland was then taken out of EU against our social/economic interests. That’s when
#IndyRef2
was called for
🎥 I knew if I ever wanted to 'compleat' the Munros I'd have to overcome - or at least manage - my fear of heights to take on some of the mountains on Skye.
This is yesterday crossing the trickiest section on the way up Sgùrr nan Gillean via the West Ridge.
"you can do this"😂
The SNP and Scottish Greens were democratically elected by the public with explicit manifesto commitments to hold an independence referendum in this parliamentary term.
It can't be a huge shock that money has been allocated in the Scottish Budget to facilitate such a referendum.
If you actually read the story, all Lorna Slater was asking for was ensuring she didn’t work for 14 days straight. Everyone, including politicians, should be allowed days off.
Absolutely love the new
@theSNP
party political broadcast, one of the best the party has produced.
Scotland is changing its mind - more Scots than ever before believe that independence is the best future for our country.

I often here how “remote” Orkney is. And it all depends on how you define that word, but here is a visual reminder of how close Orkney is to mainland Scotland.
(Taken this morning from Hoxa Head, South Ronaldsay in Orkney)
A year ago tomorrow I stepped on board the Hamnavoe at Scrabster to move to the
#Orkney
Islands. So very grateful to have the opportunity to live and work in such a truly special part of Scotland. 🙏
Every year one in three Scots will be affected by mental illness.
I went through depression in 2017 and a big thing which helped me overcome it - as well as opening up about it - was the outdoor therapy of hiking Scotland's highest mountains (Munro bagging).
Very sore legs this morning after somehow walking the 6 Munros in the remote Ben Alder range yesterday (including walking in/out), which adds up to 35.9 miles in distance!

🗓 On Saturday 30th July I’ll be heading up my 282nd and therefore final Munro! If you’d like to come along for it drop me a message and I’ll pass on the details 👍 Anyone is welcome.
Don’t underestimate the role walking, sports or exercise can play in improving mental health.
Hillwalking helped me in a huge way when experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts. 🥾⛰️

🎥 Here's my

video of last Friday's walk up Ben Nevis using the Càrn Mòr Dearg Arête, a narrow mountain ridge at around 4,000 feet in altitude - almost three times the height of the Empire State Building.
The views were incredible once the mist cleared. 🙌

I know Scotland has what it takes to be a successful and prosperous independent country. With independence we can build a fairer, greener, progressive and more outward-looking nation.
I don’t think I really need to explain why the mountainous areas of Torridon is one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland - these photos from today speak for themselves.

If you’re looking for a Halloween night scare… this is what it’s like to rock climb Scotland’s most difficult Munro 👻
It is of course the Inaccessible Pinnacle on the Isle of Skye.
Some personal news - I’ve been appointed the Media & Communications Manager at
@StJohnstone
FC. Delighted to be back. Thanks to colleagues and supporters for the warm welcome.

It still amazes me just how far you can see when standing on top of a mountain. Today’s views from a Munro in Perth & Kinross to prominent hills in Stirling, Argyll & Bute and The Highlands.

: “Isn’t it time that Scotland was in a better position than just crossing our fingers and hoping for the least worst option in terms of Westminster governments and instead got the governments WE voted for? And that’s what we get with independence.”

Massive respect to Humza Yousaf. I’ve never seen any leader respond to someone interrupting their speech by going directly to them in this way to diffuse the situation and listen to what they were saying. It was brave (as it could easily have backfired) but also took leadership.
The woman is now leaving being helped out by Humza Yousaf who, it has to be said, effectively resolved the situation and to a standing ovation on stage he says the party and government cares for everyone in Scotland and will listen to anyone.
The question is not just, “should Scotland be an independent country?”, it’s also whether we live in a democracy.
In 2021, Scotland elected a pro-independence majority government on a clear mandate for an independence referendum.
If live in a democracy, that should take place.
