Did you know: there are 250,000 hectares of south facing COMMERCIAL roof space in the UK? This could provide approximately 50% of the UKโ€™s electricity demand. (Source: BRE National Solar Centre). Add to that domestic roof space. No excuse to use best farmland. Use it for food!

Is it just men who are obsessed with mowing lawns? I try to do โ€˜no mowโ€™ for wildlife but my husband insists on trying to mow everything in sight & my neighbour has just โ€˜kindlyโ€™ mowed our front verge without asking (where I planted wildflower seeds). How to get through to them?!

The farmer has just mowed & massacred the wildflower verge weโ€™ve been leaving unmown til autumn. It was beautiful & its best ever. Huge variety of flowers & so many insects. Now nothing. I was going out very day to see what was new. ๐Ÿ˜ข Thought @BraintreeDC policy is Sept mow?

Last night, under the cover of darkness, contractors employed by @plymouthcc started felling 100 street trees to make way for a new โ€œmodernโ€ centre to the city. 80% of people were against these works. Democracy has failed in #Plymouth today. Abhorrent.

Look at this and weep. Colchester BC should never have included it in the plan. It's rare acid grassland, soon to be built on and 'replaced' on farmland nearby by pouring sulphur on. Worse, the officer who included it in the plan has been recommended for an @RTPIEastofEng award

This is countryside without any designation (no green belt or AONB etc). It isnโ€™t an industrial wasteland. This summer this field is in an environmental scheme. In the autumn the farmer will sow winter wheat. It is countryside doing what countryside should do. Stunning, too

Presumably abandoned by its parents after the incredibly stressful and noisy hours of felling.

If you are in charge of even the smallest piece of land, itโ€™s important to remember that itโ€™s the rough, untidy edges and corners that get wildlife through freezing weather; long grasses, fat hedges, wood piles. Ruthless tidiness makes life so much harder for wild creatures.

Ground-based solar - donโ€™t believe โ€˜greenโ€™ claims. Just met a farmer who has been told to spray 120 acres of wheat, which is in ear & under 2 months from harvest, with Round Up - needs to be killed off for archaeological digs. Why canโ€™t they wait? (Photo not the field)

This area of farmland has been left unmanaged for several years & the natural regeneration of trees & scrub is well underway. In order to get paid for growing trees this would have to be cleared to plant trees, it's ridiculous!
