Social care is described as support for washing, dressing eating & taking medication. Itโs so much more than that. Its support to enable people to flourish, to be active, independent, enjoy life, try new activities, develop friendships, be part of society & live a fulfilling life

to call on them to ensure disabled people are put at the heart of any plan they make as PM to address the cost-of-living crisis. We havenโt heard back from either of them.
Why are disabled people being kicked off trains? Taking staff out of ticket offices will mean it's not safe for disabled people to travel independently. How will anybody who is blind, disabled or needs assistance get on and off a train without ticket office staff to help them?โ
Why would a government target disabled people as the problem and introduce sanctions for those unable to work when so many already live in poverty, struggle with the additional costs of living and to pay their energy bills. Why?
A disabled man left waiting on a plane fell to his death at Gatwick airport after getting off without a helper. This is a tragic incident which should never have happened. Someone should have been helping him.
In much brighter and positive news (and we really need a distraction from the grim stuff) meet Eleanor two-year-old girl with Down's syndrome who has been chosen to model for a children's wear brand. Hopefully more companies will be inclusive.

As a reminder!
PIP is not about getting disabled people back into work. You can work full time and claim PIP.
Itโs there to tackle the extra costs you face as a disabled person. Those costs don't disappear if you work.
The government has forgotten that disability benefits are a good thing. They help disabled people to live full, happy lives. We should be proud as a country of having a system in place that provides disabled people with a safety net, not demonising those who need to use it.
News that makes you smile. Thatโs uplifting & encouraging. Heidi, who is deaf in one ear, got a doll with a hearing aid for her birthday . It transformed Heidi giving her a new inner-confidence. Heidi saidโ she looks like me & has the same hearing aid."
Tonight, letโs clap for the disabled children and families and carers at home who carry on behind closed doors, so often forgotten, struggling silently and always with dignity. During

wants to introduce Latin in schools. Alternatively thousands in the UK use British Sign Language. There are many children who are born deaf, and we need to give them a better chance at a more integrated future. This is why BSL needs to be taught in schools.
Half of all people living in poverty are disabled people or have a disabled person in their household. More than half of people who use food banks are disabled people.
The crisis isn't over. Benefits must increase in line with inflation so that people can afford the essentials.
The Covid inquiry is to investigate if there was widespread policy to issue Do Not Attempt to Resuscitate notices on older Covid patients in hospitals without their familiesโ consent. It should also investigate the same secret policy for disabled people.
โI worry terribly for some of those who have disabled children or disabilities themselves who need lots of electrical equipment to keep their houses warm because of medical conditionsโ says โฆ

High Court has ruled that govt breached the Equality Act by not providing British Sign Language interpreters for its Covid briefings. These briefings were essential in keeping safe but were not accessible to thousands who use BSL. Well done Katie Rowley for bringing this case
Benefit claimants who refuse work will lose their handouts in whatโs regarded as the biggest crackdown in a decade.
This kind of talk is terrifying and adds up to the biggest crackdown on the independence and dignity of disabled people.
Now, disabled people could be moved to care homes to save money. This policy will deny disabled peopleโs rights to receive the support they need based on personal preference, and to live independently at home with choice and control over that support.
Lots of people are signing off for Xmas & the rest of 2020. Thatโs all fine. But letโs not forget that so many front line workers across health, social care & other settings are still working throughout this time. Resilient, compassionate & humble. Putting others first. ๐ ๐
Thank you to everyone on Twitter for your supportive & kind messages following my recent positive Covid 19 test. This has been the worst & most debilitating illness Iโve ever had. I also know that Iโm lucky not to be in hospital. Everyday Iโm getting a little stronger. Keep safe.

Dislike some of their dialogue. Please avoid phrases like โsuffersโ which suggest discomfort, pain & sense of hopelessness. People donโt โsufferโ from disabilities. People live with them. Itโs also disability not difficulty..
Seven out of ten disabled people who appeal against a decision to deny disability benefits are successful. Thatโs 293,000 people overturning a government decision at tribunal. 1,000 have died while formally challenging their benefits. Thatโs heartbreaking
The plans to close almost every ticket office in England have caused outrage. Now disabled rail users have applied for a judicial review as consultation failed to give disabled people enough information in accessible formats.

Disabled people and their supporters including Judi Dench have protested at York Council's permanent ban on disabled parking in the city centre. The time to end the discrimination that prevents disabled people playing a full part in York is long overdue.
4 million people take regular Covid tests including carers who visit snd help vulnerable relatives. Removing free testing will increase anxiety and limit socialisation outside the home. It will also amount to a tax on carers and disabled people.

Disabled people spend more than others just to live their lives: specialist equipment, help with daily living and additional transport. PIP covers some of the costs. Now, thereโs speculation the benefit will be cut. It will have devastating consequences.
I canโt stop thinking about how many disabled children, adults & families are still shielding & havenโt left the house at all since March. For many that means no external support from education therapies, respite or equipment in this time. Lockdown has intensified their isolation
People with learning disabilities are 6 times more likely to die from Covid-19. Govt, please put disabled people with high support needs & people with learning disabilities as one of the top priorities for Covid vaccinations along with family carers & staff supporting people. RT

The government has signed a contract targeting 20% cuts to the number of new education plans for children with special educational needs and disabilities (Send) to bring down costs. This is all about significantly reducing provision for disabled children.
This commentator says that Ellie Simmonds being on Strictly is "pushing indigestible quantities of diversity down viewersโ throats." I see Ellie as a Paralympic champion who continues to inspire people across the country.
Talking to families with disabled children they tell me how support vanished overnight in March & how they still plug the gaps surviving minute by minute. Families arenโt speech & language therapists or physiotherapists; they are trying to do the best they can without support

Unpaid carers have fought the same battle as our social care staff and they do it behind closed doors and without recognition. They have feel ignored and forgotten since the start of the pandemic and without support for their own physical and emotional well-being

Helen Keller died 1st June in 1968. She was the 1st deafblind person to earn a degree; a powerful advocate for disabled people. Her words then remain so poignant now โAlthough the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.โ
The needs of family carers are completely neglected. โI am always exhausted and when you're so exhausted, that's when you could run the risk of making mistakes. I've never been given training for this role, but I do it and I live it every day.โ says Yvette

we're now talking about children & poverty. Remember, 4 million disabled people live in poverty. Disabled people face extra costs of ยฃ583 each month. That's why we need a dedicated Covid-19 plan & action for disabled children, adults & their families
Hundreds of thousands of disabled people are set to be told their benefits will be cut unless they find work they can do from home.
This move looks set to punish disabled people adding more anxiety onto disabled households that are already struggling.
Some people are now stopping work for the festive season. Please donโt forget the social care workers and the unpaid carers who donโt stop at Christmas and New Year and continue to care and support others. They are our countryโs heroes.๐

This is how inaccessible transport is for disabled people.
When I talk to families with disabled children & adults at home, I hear how they have carried on behind closed doors, struggling silently and with dignity. Pressures have built up without help or release. Not ever feeling part of the governmentโs to-do list. This is heartbreaking

Disabled people have the same right to an independent and fulfilling life whether or not they are able to work.
We should celebrate the fact that the welfare system in this country exists to support disabled people to live full and active lives, not decry that support.
The new government must show from day one that disabled people and the societal inequalities they face truly matter to them.
That means a plan to fix social care, access to education and welfare.
It must listen to disabled peopleโs voices & change their lives for the better.
15 years ago my mental health was poor. I had to take two weeks off work. I felt lost and worthless. Today, Iโm privileged to lead a charity. Then I was told I donโt have the strength of character to succeed. Now, thereโre good and bad days but I feel more resilient than ever. ๐
A decision to prioritise a group for vaccination is not simply a scientific exercise, it is an ethical one too. Given the profound health inequalities, all disabled people living in the community & their carers should be prioritised for a vaccination -
Sixteen people with a learning disability were abused at Whorlton Hall and suffered a lifetime of trauma. Yet their paid staff escape jail and receive suspended sentences. This isnโt justice.
First Matthew Parris wants to crack down on disability benefits. Now he addresses assisted dying saying old & frail people are a burden on society. Until social care & palliative care are available to everybody at a certain level, insensitive talk like this is really frightening.
Unpaid carers are fighting the same battle as our social care staff and they do it behind closed doors and without sufficient recognition. They have feel ignored and forgotten since the start of the pandemic and without support for their own physical and emotional well-being

Dominic Cummings said today โthere wasnโt a planโ for those shielding. Millions were on the shielding list. Many are disabled people. They were hit the hardest in this pandemic. The comments, if true, are a damning indictment of how we support disabled people in society.

Four million disabled people in the UK already live in poverty. They face higher living costs and tend to earn less than non-disabled counterparts even with the same qualifications. Poverty has soared in this pandemic. We need a new deal for disabled people if we are to level up.
The number of unpaid carers increased by four million since the pandemic. 1 in 8 now provide unpaid care. But there is still no increase in the financial support for the carers nor plans to invest in short breaks. Carers shouldnโt be left out of the debate on social care reform
Please read Rory Kinnearโs moving and heartfelt appeal to end the conspiracy of silence on social care. Families often cover the shortfall in social care. But should loveโs resilience really be so voraciously exploited, and at such cost to peopleโs lives?
Disabled people in Scotland with serious lifelong conditions will no longer have to attend reassessments to continue receiving their benefits. A fairer and more compassionate approach.

Barbara is a family carer. Sheโs 93. She is exhausted looking after her disabled son. They are 1.7 million family carers supporting disabled adults at home. 1.7 million carers like Barbara providing care but receiving little or no support.
People claiming universal credit and working less than 18 hours a week will be forced to look for more work But what happens to disabled people who can't work for 18 hours? And what happens to the system designed to support not penalise disabled people?
Very sadly, Achilles died yesterday after suffering with cancer. He was a wonderful, beautiful and majestic cat and weโre pretty upset, but it was time. We had a lot of fun and love from him. Wishing you eternal cuddles in the sky xx (2010-2021)
Back in June, we knew that deaths of disabled people were 2.4 times higher than for non-disabled people. In November, we know deaths among learning disabled people are 6 times higher. Yet again, we ask government to have a specific plan to support disabled people. Please act now
A generation of disabled children may not recover fully from COVID-19. Their emotional & learning development has fallen behind. We need a dedicated plan to assist children's recovery, provide them with support they need, support with mental wellbeing, & extra help for families
In 2016, Equality Human Rights Commission said government had violated disabled peopleโs rights.
In 2023, it reports disabled people face poverty, low income, poor public services and public prejudice. What happened to a society that works for everyone?
Iโve struggled with my mental health all my life. Iโm disappointed by the PMโs comments about mental health and work. It belittles individualโs personal pain by saying mental health is everyday challenges and worries. It wonโt help anyone get or keep work.
Thanks to everyone who sent kind messages & enquired about my health after I got COVID at Christmas. I was very fortunate that I didnโt need to go to hospital & for so many it had been a worse situation. Iโll be back at work on Monday but will take things a bit easier for a while
