born, went to school, hated it, got job, loved it, forced out by idiot, retired, waited around to die -- BUT: loving a few true Greats can really see ya thru.
ISNT IT OBVIOUS? Republicans can't win elections so they try every dirty slimy trick they can to get control without votes -- like Trump trying to steal the Presidency with spurious, idiotic lawsuits. REPUBLICANS DON'T JUST HATE DEMOCRATS; THEY HATE DEMOCRACY.
@shaunpcassidy
Watched J.Cassidy in COLUMBO earlier today. He was damn good -- elegantly slimy as the guy whodunit. Written by Steven Bochco, directed by Steven Spielberg. Howz THAT for a pair of Stevens?! I know this is anything but news to you, but I watched based on what U had texted.
Bless you for the good work you do. Preservationists are heroes of our time, like nature photographers & first responders. I'm a last responder myself but then I got uhhhh -- bone spurs in my foot. Yeah that's it.
@RealTomShales
Virtually all Poverty Row films from the 1930s, and the vast majority from the 1940s have been in the public domain for many years. Many survive because safety prints were struck for early TV.
@UCLAFTVArchive
has restored a few but most are badly in need of restoration.
Great show, brilliant host, best & brightest of all the political humor on television, it’s the only daily entertainment program I never miss. I’d go so far as to say it’s worth suffering thru Trump for the whacks that Meyers & Co. take at him —almost. Almost.

debuted with guests Amy Poehler and train enthusiast Joe Biden. Thanks to everyone who has watched and to our incredible staff for making each day a joy.
BREAKING! President Biden has reunited an additional 100 children separated at the border by Donald Trump with 350 more in process!
Who else thinks this should be a BIGGER story in the media? ✋
One story I heard, perhaps apocryphal, is that Frank showed up for shooting but when he found out the movie had to be done twice --for anamorphic & for standard ratio -- he bowed out & went home. He seems all wrong for the part anyway.
@RealTomShales
Agreed. “Carousel” is my favorite R&H score, and unfortunately Henry King was a old, staid silent film director when he took the helm of the movie (Sinatra was originally slated to play Bigelow, by the way.) But Fred Zinnemann did masterful work on “Oklahoma”.
Oh, Doc Pop? (
@DrPopCultureBG
). Did u ask re Norm Macdonald? I haven't felt up to the task. Loved his work & dealing with him on the Miller-Shales SNL book (which included Ohlmeyer mess). 'Have been watching Classic Norm all week, will write something (for what it's worth) soon.
Norman Lloyd had a fabulous life. Dangling from the Statue of Liberty's arm was all in a day's work. I only met him once but always hoped there'd be another time. He was full of fascinating stories. And I'm willing to bet that even at 106 he was still fascinated with life.
There is a sad irony that the same elected officials who refused to listen to science, who mocked public health, who minimized the coronavirus, are desperate for science to bail out their negligence (which has led to unnecessary death and suffering) with vaccines and treatments.

William, Moi Aussi re "300-lb man." In fact I scaled 340, maybe even touched the hem of 350 (Now 240). Still I didnt fit the Big Fat Slob profile as DJT does. Potentially Good News: letting oneself go to that extent signals surrender & lapse of self-esteem. Let it be, let it be!

Jeez what a nice thing to say. Have I maybe got the virus & don't know it, & you feel sorry for me?! (Just LOL'ing around, I hope). If I praise you now, it will sound like... yes... quid pro quo! But I am a fan & that's that. And I'll meet you on the other side of The Plague....
JOHNNY disliked Bob Hope intensely, and feared he would follow in Hopes footsteps -- living only for work & money & having virtually no close friends. That's what he told me.

is easily the BEST of the Big 3 network evening newscasts-- highest news density, least bullshit. ABC has the most glitz & best-looking correspondents, & CBS still does the news circa 1965. That's the way it really is, folks, & I won a Pulitzer.
@LouLumenick
Were U on TCM with Osborne? I'm not asking 'cause I was -- especially since I fucked it up so badly -- but what a great man he was. Non Sequitur: Fave obscure musical: "Youre a Sweetheart" w/Alice Faye & -- Walter Winchell?! I knew him near end of his life. Dreadful man....

Sally Field, 75?! Terrific in many a movie, she brings her own glow to the screen. I was in a scene with her on HBO's "Larry Sanders Show," yet we never met. My loss.
Don, creaky old geezers like me are thrilled to be remembered at all, much less with approval. SO! You haven't always agreed with me?! And you have the NERVE to call yourself my biggest fan? Oh; U never said anything like that? Well, no hard feelings, Punk! And -- thank you.
@RealTomShales
Oh yeah — I’ve read your work. High praise though not in 100% accord. But my respect for your insights has never wavered.
And your SNL book is seminal. It’s an honor to “know” you.
Charlie Chaplin. but actually it was Mrs Chaplin; she couldn't get Charlie to come to the [hotel room] door. For many years, he was the most famous person on the planet, partly because his movies surmounted all language barriers.
I like it because I didn't have to do much writing. It's mostly in the words of those who created SNL. And btw, if one of them should strike u as dull, hop on over to the next witness or to a new string of anecdotes. (If u love the show, tho, I doubt you'll be bored).
I may have weighed more than Sting & Shandling put together; later lost 65 pounds. But it was a huge kick to rub those elbows, and have a dressing room with flowers from Garry in it. (I came back from taping to find one of the producers eating my candy -- schmuck!).

were alive today: "It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times." Or maybe, "It was the worst of times; then they got even worse." Sorry to be negative but this Millenium sucks.
Always thought "Carousel" had the better, richer score (than Ok! Or maybe all R&H shows) but Carousel the movie was directed by one of the bland Fox regulars whereas Ok! was directed by Fred Zinnemann; made big difference ....
My Bobby Vinton story: When I interviewed B.V. for the Post, Ben Bradlee (the Supreme Court on such matters) demanded an edit; Bobby's observation that Poles make love "with their socks on" had to go. Seriously! Ben's reason, as always: "It's a family newspaper." How I miss him.

I wanted to tell people who love good television that here was a program they probably would enjoy & should think about sampling. I never wrote that crap about "here's a MUST-see." As far as I'm concerned there are no must-see's. But damn good stuff.
WILLARD SCOTT, America loved you. And you earned it. You kept the adjective "jolly" alive. It's almost extinct now. I was always glad to see you, Willard, and of few people can that be said by anybody.
NOT JUST "FALSEHOODS" -- THE USUAL OUTRIGHT LIES. Don't do Trump the favor of hiding his bullshit in euphemisms. He is a threat to our beautiful republic -- a crook & a traitor -- who should be escorted to the border (ANY border) & deported.
@realDonaldTrump
MSNBC producers gave up on televising Donald Trump’s highly-touted South Lawn rally on Saturday afternoon, ending coverage after only seven minutes with host Alex Witt pointing out that the president was spewing a series of falsehoods.

“Darling I love you but give me Park Avenue.” SORRY, BUDDY, it’s been done = GREEN ACRES absurdist surrealist sitcom with Eddie Albert & Eva Gabor......
My sister Mary & I tormented our father into buying us a color TV; on Sunday nights we'd tune to NBC, "the all-color [RCA-Owned] network" & ooh & ahh over the opening credits to "Disney" & "Bonanza," wondering how fabulous it must all look multi-hued. Poor Dad, but it worked.
I helped save “Cheers” from cancellation & was 1 of the critics who convinced Brandon Tartikoff not to kill “SNL” when ratings tanked. Critics aren’t always negative snoots. Good ones encourage quality as passionately as they deride crap. And Lou, you know that from experience.
@RealTomShales
You're too modest, Tom. You championed then-obscure films like THE LAST FLIGHT (one of my faves, intro'd it at a museum and on TCM) in your wonderful essays for AFI's "American Film Heritage.''
@TheEllenShow
So sad to see Hotel Bel-Air on list. I used to consider it my drop-in sanitarium. Can’t afford it now anyway. I may as well reveal I once found HALF A DEAD RAT on the patio outside my room. TRUE. I’d like to serve Filet of Rat to that fat fuck Sultan of Brunei.
That infomercial for the TimeLife collection of Robin Williams comedy Hijinks is currently the most entertaining half hour on TV, one of the sweetest ads ever. Profits probably go partly to pay off old debts, or maybe his ex-wives want still more alimony. But god, he was funny.

Of all the TV shows that air, or ever aired, none springs surprises more surprisingly than "Saturday Night Live." Glorious example: young Andrew Dismukes' "Update" piece a week ago in which Bongo the psychic Octopus (stay with me) was to pick the winner of a Sunday football game.

I saw Buddy Ebsen in Hollywood once, eating lunch alone at Musso & Frank Grill, the counter. Grim. For much of his life, he was bitter & nasty about Jack Haley getting the Tin Man part in WIZARD OF OZ instead of him. He’d even avoid referring to Haley by name, the old crank.

REMEMBER CHUCK FOR HIS MAGICAL PERFORMANCE IN ROBERT ELLIS MILLERS FILM “THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER” (FROM THE CARSON McCULLERS NOVEL). AND HIS TOUR DE FORCE IN “THE PROJECTIONIST.” God bless you, Chuck, and the beautiful work you left us.
Daughter just sent me her first script and could a father be more proud? No. Not possible. Without even reading I know I’m going to be floored ‘cause her heart and brain have no dividing line; they’re the 405 meets the 101. All drive and hope and possibility, without the delays.
The 8-year-old daughter of a sports couple said she hopes for the day when "the world feels better." There were many highlights, including tender harmonies brought to the National Anthem by "The Chicks" & Joe Biden's solid speech. I watched all of it & will remember much of it.
Thank you -- I think. Perhaps it has added nostalgia value now -- a reminder of the simpler beginnings of what is now a complex empire. Production values have increased 100 x what they were -- but the earliest casts put the current cast to shame. O Pioneers!(W.Whitman)

oral history in hardback my best friend gifted to me nearly 20 years ago. Rescued from the shelves, it is a welcomed escape in these dire times.
Michael -- the director in the booth isn't getting much choice of shots. And that poor (red-headed) model! This reminds me of a great bit Jerry Lewis did once with cameras surrounding & trapping him in a kind of video nightmare....
Early Tues, Shelley Winters died from drowning as Mrs Rosen in “Poseidon Adventure”(HBO) & at night she drowned again in “A Place in the Sun”(TCM). 2 decades separate the performances but each was a brilliant heartbreaker from a prodigious pro — the kind we’ll “never see again.”
I'm usually right on this kind of thing, as with Tom Cruise decades ago: WILL POULTER is going to be a big big big big STAR. He's zooming up fast, despite taking a part in hysterical hulu trash "Dopesick." Poulter has keen comic instincts, deep sensitivity, & dynamite eyebrows.
ONE OF THE 10 WORST SNL EPISODES E V E R. Will someone tell me what dull fat clod Jonah Hill possesses that might be mistaken for talent? Why were 4 or 5 dead-weight performers carried over to this season when the bell tolled for them a year ago? Thank God for Kenan Thompson.
Everyone knows that; and Lorne never claimed to have hired Eddie. And Yet -- there IS a connection. See "Live from NY" by James Andrew Miller (and, oh yeah, me. Not trying to sell books; borrow a copy).
HES FOLLOWING HITLER's PLAYBOOK. Trump is a thug supported by thugs. His loutish performance at the "debate" was equivalent to the Reichstag fire set by Hitler's Nazis in 1933. Hitler blamed Communists-- for everything -- & Trump blames "leftists." Biden? He is HOPELESSLY NAIVE.
I wasn't a baby quite but I did show both pilots to a small group of friends & asked them which had best chance of becoming a hit. They all said Chicago Hope. I said "Wrong! Its ER.". I was soon proved right & knew I was born to be a critic....
I was a baby TV critic in 1994, when CHICAGO HOPE and ER both premiered 25 years ago this week. I liked both shows, but ER was easily my favorite.
Gonna tweet some of my review, which took the form of a "scalpel-to-scalpel comparison" (I was making lists long before BuzzFeed!)
Great to hear Actual Beautiful Music on SNL again: Paul Simon, a veritable bridge over troubled waters himself. Terrific show hosted by Seth Meyers. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
@thedonz5
I love that there are folks following you who want to know when the first Hal Gurnee timekiller aired. Etc! You know I'm sure that Hal was Jack Paar's director back in the Pleistocene (?) Age. Probably the best, most inventive director of a talk show ever.
As I recall NBC’s SOUTHERN AFFILIATES destroyed Nat “King” Cole series (& also screamed bloody murder when Petula Clarke touched Harry Belafonte during a special). The South, yech. Bobby Rivers, correct sir!
Sad. "Dr."
@DrewPinsky
popping up on Fox to take baldly pro-Trump view on the spread of Corona & the lousy job Administration has been doing to save lives. "Dr." Pinsky just another whore trying to boost his "brand." Too bad the whole country can't file a mass malpractice suit.
JAY SANDRICH was a quiet giant -- a largely unsung master of a rare talent, directing TV comedy to make it not just good but sometimes great. I met him only a couple of times but he was easy to know & disarmingly unpretentious. And his humanity was obvious in his work & his art.
Since you seem affiliated with the gang that celebrates it, you'll agree that some of the greatest TV scripts ever done were by Nat Hiken (& Neil Simon, et al) for the Phil Silvers show which went by various names. Some of same talent also thrived on "Car 54, Where Are You?".
That's a face of HATE not love. Derangement not compassion. Egomania not piety. Thats some sick shit there, that is -- and scary. A loony to lead a mob, not a man of God with a message of peace. Not even close.
Okay maybe Conan was "too good for" television (tho I hate that phrase) but where else could he be put? 'Wouldn't have made much of a movie star. Couldn't have sung "Pagliacci." Conan & TV were stuck with each other but lucky us that they were. I wish I'd paid more attention.
Ike was so much smarter than he was given credit for ( remember his warning about the military-industrial complex?). Smug snobs at Ivy League schools mocked him but compare him to what we have in the White House now. The WH has become the real virus incubator.
It "makes sense"? A nice thought but in the current climate, making sense ain't worth a dribble of spit. Seems like we've entered not the Twilight Zone but the "Bizarro World" that Jerry & friends used to worry about on "Seinfeld." All bets involving sense & sanity are off.
“We’re not letting anybody in.” — President Idiot, who thinks of our country as his private club, and he’s the one with domain over the velvet rope. DUMP TRUMP; he’s not a funny clown, he’s a monster. He’s Nero.

Where have you poor sad fools been the last 4 years while the malicious idiot in the White House lied & cheated & dumped on America? You missed the attack on peaceful protesters? The 1,000 warning signs of creeping fascism? You're either stupid beyond belief or simply traitors.
J.McG very funny sparring with Granny on “Beverly Hillbillies” once. Don’t know if he ever played it but would have made a great “Ruggles of Red Gap.” Gilbert, I think your source may be wrong on “Midnight Cowboy.” Wasn’t it look-alike Barnard Hughes who played part?
