On This Day In History: Judy Garland -- with Carolyn Jones, June Allyson, her daughter and Liza Minnelli -- holds a Hollywood press conference to raise funds for families effected by the Sept. 15 racist bombing of 4 Black girls in a Birmingham, Alabama church.
...and she had to push to audition for 1990's GHOST, the film that brought her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Despite a Best Actress Oscar nomination for 1985's THE COLOR PURPLE, producers would not see her. Star Patrick Swayze said "Let her audition or I quit."
A reminder that Whoopi Goldberg has an EGOT and was the first African-American to receive Academy Award nominations for both Best Actress AND Best Supporting Actress.
A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics. Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.
Oh, yeah? Well, I have a woman friend who was not a fan of Bill Cosby spiking her drink. She was one of the 35 women to spoke to NEW YORK MAGAZINE in 2015.
One of the things I loved most about THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW was that our family watched it together and laughed. Kids and parents. I loved that sweet Saturday night family bonding.

Judy Garland, born this day in history. One night, when I was a little boy, Dad watched THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW on CBS instead of watching BONANZA. She sang "Old Man River." Dad said, "She is probably the only White person who has a right to sing that song."

Alan Arkin has died at age 89. How I loved his work. He could be menacing in WAIT UNTIL DARK, heartbreaking in THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER and hilarious in THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING. He did great work over a long, terrific career.

Cicely Tyson got her Best Actress Oscar nomination for her brilliance in SOUNDER (1972). Hard to believe she has only 1 Oscar nom. That's due to the lack of Hollywood opportunities for women of color. On TV, she played Jane Pittman, Coretta Scott King, Harriet Tubman.

I would love to hear a host intro or outro about Judy Garland that highlights her awesome versatility as an actress and skips mentioning her problems and addiction. She was one of Hollywood's legendary triple threat talents. She could sing, dance and act. 🌈
1988. Spike Lee was a guest on my VH1 show. He arrived sweaty, apologetic, 20 minutes late. We'd sent a car to get him in Brooklyn. The driver refused to let him into the car because "he didn't look like a movie director." Spike took the subway. The driver was fired.

I cannot believe she's gone. I spent about 1 sensational hour with her at VH1 in the late 80s for an interview. She was...simply the best.

Garland wanted to attend the 1963 March on Washington with other celebs. But she had a Sunday night prime time variety show on weekly CBS and the network wouldn't grant her time off. She was pro-Civil Rights.
If you were an MGM studio exec in 1944, would you have campaigned in the press to get Judy Garland an Oscar nomination for MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS? I would have. If just for her poignant, moving introduction of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" 🎬

My mom loved and introduced me to Barbara Stanwyck movies on TV when I was a boy. I picked up the love from Mom. It still amazes me how effortlessly and memorably Stanwyck could swing from comedy like BALL OF FIRE to classic film noir like DOUBLE INDEMNITY. A great actress. 🎬

I say "More power to you, Geoffrey Owens." I had my own VH1 talk show in the late 80s. I hosted a Food Network show that ran from 2002-2008. In the last few years, I've worked as a dogwalker. Good dogs, good owners.
When I look at this picture of Geoffrey Owens, the only things that come to my mind are courage, humility and dedication. Very few artists, especially actors, can fully support themselves in their craft. Taking honest, hard work to offset those dry periods is honorable.
On TV, he gave us THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, RHODA and TAXI. On the big screen, this writer/director gave us TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, BROADCAST NEWS and AS GOOD AS IT GETS.
