Unexpectedly, the 1997 referendum on Welsh devolution is back in the news. Setting aside Theresa May's misremembering/rank hypocrisy [delete according to taste] concerning her own and her own party's position, the lesson of Wales 1997 is actually about 'loser's consent' 1/

The UK govt’s paper on free speech in Unis (with implications for Wales) is getting a lot of attention. Worth noting then that an important part of the evidence-base on which it rests relates to (demonstrably false) claims about my own institution 1/

This is (inadvertently) so revealing by @DPJHodges - even if one suspects that there was some last minute rewriting after it became clear that England is nowbeing forced into a longer, harsher lockdown than Wales' because it didn't go early enough... Three points stand out 1/

Your occasional reminder: the 'Irish border' also a huge issue for Wales. Holyhead the 2nd busiest port in Britain. How the hell does that configuration of geology and urban landscape cope with 1000+ lorries a day and a hard border? Do David Davis or Alun Cairns have any idea?

Loser's consent has not been forthcoming in part because Theresa May and her government has made absolutely no attempt to generate it. The lesson of the 1997 referendum is pretty much the exact opposite of the one that May is touting and reflects terribly on her DIWEDD/FIN

**40%** Let's not mess about. This is both a poor area (av. wage 16K p.a.) and a Welsh speaking heartland. Letting the 'free' market rip *will* kill off Welsh as a community language Revealed: The proportion of houses in Gwynedd sold as second homes.

At risk of labouring this, is seems to me that the contrast between post 1997 Wales and post 2016 UK could hardly be starker. But not in the way Theresa May wants to claim. May's government has made practically no effort to secure the consent of those who voted Remain 11/

‘Never in the history of the role can there have been such dedicated service’ Yep, here’s the Head of the Church of England talking about the current Prince of Wales in a ceremony held in London yesterday... You couldn’t make this shit up...

Except that two of the three are clearly not ‘UK-wide’ parties and neither is the other one in any meaningful way... At least have the honesty to what you mean: “the three big parties in England...”

Every specific community/area mentioned by RLB is in England. Yet ‘England’ never mentioned. ‘Progressive patriotism’ all v very well, but until Labour is comfortable talking about Englishness suspect it’s going nowhere. PS ‘towns’ does not equal England

Dan Hodges implies that this is because the locals are somehow unwelcoming or worse. But a better journalist would have had a look at what it might mean to a person living in Harlech, for example, if they or their relatives get infected. 4/

*So* many hot takes on attitudes in Wales where we are all apparently struggling under the yoke of Drakefordist tyranny... But what do the Welsh people actually think? Here's the latest evidence and it's very, very, very (enough verys?) different... 1.

The idea that these are governments facing real challenges, forced to make difficult and no-doubt imperfect decisions, all in a context in which they can't simply turn on the financial taps in the way the UK government can and does, is clearly too much to take. 9/

First, generally speaking, and to the author's fairly obvious irritation, people in areas where transmission is high are clearly understanding of the decision to go for the firebreak - which is what the Welsh polling has already told us, of course. 2/

Secondly, and to the author's very obvious irritation, people living in rural areas where the health infrastructure is weak are very concerned about the potential public health impact of people coming into those areas from other places where the infection rate is much higher. 3/

Appreciate the efforts of @fmwales and @RhonddaBryant to create an opportunity to promote my study of the previous, dismal attempts to label @Plaid_Cymru as fascist. Will a 10% cut suffice, I wonder? Here's the link for purchase. A bargain!

One of (many) problems with this framing is that SK doesn’t seem to realise that, whatever their views on the constitution, the vast majority of people in Wales think this country is poorly treated within the UK. For very few does it feels like we ‘punch above our weight’...

The Welsh are patriotic realists who care deeply about Wales' position on the world stage & who know being part of UK helps us to punch above our weight. The independence Welsh nationalists seek wld diminish Wales' stature & wld have disastrous impact on Welsh jobs & livelihoods.

It goes without saying that they almost certainly didn't get everything right. With the benefit of hindsight, there are things that might have been done differently. "Heb ei fai heb ei eni", as we say in Welsh. 8/

The thinking here is apparently that the Union is in trouble because the UK level lacks 'visibility' in Scotland. But what if visibility is part of the problem? The more Scots see of the Johnson-Cummings government, the less they like it...🤔 1.

This is untrue and it's depressing that, of all people, the @FT don't have a better grasp of how devolved government is financed

Is this true? Can the devolved administration really "charge" Westminster on an ad hoc basis for their spending? Or do they have to make spending decisions only within the grant they get? @ThatsDevolved @RWynJones
