OTTERS AT RSPB OLD MOOR
Its official - Otters are calling the Dearne Valley their home. Over the last few weeks we have been recording night time evidence including footage from camera traps and spraint (Otter poo) locations across RSPB Old Moor.

It has come to our attention that a long eared owl winter roost is receiving undue attention. It’s a real honour to have these wonderful birds in the Dearne Valley however there is a real concern that the bird will abandon the roost which will be a real tragedy
What a fortnight! We’ve been chuffed to broadcast & host

"Hey, mam, I'm on the telly!" Ada, Trevor and Col, our independent ecosystem engineers are

As many of you will know, the loss of Swifts and House Martins in the UK is a very real and pressing concern. ☹️ To try and increase numbers at RSPB Old Moor, we recently installed a multi-habitat nest box made by local company
@PeakBoxes
to attract both species (and bats!)💚🦇
A wild oasis between bustling urban places, Old Moor is a haven for wildlife & people. Working with incredible volunteers, funders, partners & communities, we’ve given this post-industrial landscape a new lease of wild life!

Sid still visits the reserve almost every day!
He’s one of a dedicated group of locals who watched birds here, helping them unwind after working in the Dearne Valley coal mines. They were the first people to truly realise its potential for wildlife.

Turn a leaf over... and you might just find some TREASURES. Welcome to the world of galls!
Here’s a double whammy - a ferocious lacewing larvae prowling around some spangle galls on an oak leaf. Tiny worlds right under your nose!

We are EXTREMELY excited to announce the arrival of Autumn, and with it AUTUMNWATCH!
Old Moor is to be one of the venues for the show this autumn, and we couldn't be more excited to be welcoming

team!

In winter, RSPB Old Moor comes into it's own as our resident birds are joined by wintering migrants. What have you spotted whilst on you wintery lockdown walks around the Dearne Valley?

Great News, wetland areas of the Dearne Valley inc: Old Moor and the satellite reserves have been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. For more info-
Last year, volunteer Gerald Lax took this incredible photo of four bitterns together from the aptly-named... Bittern Monitoring Hide 😂
Since we took on the site in 2003, we've attracted breeding bearded tits, marsh harriers & bitterns!

Wait a second… that’s not a coal tit!
Old Moor is lucky to be home to rather rare willow tits! Our lovely visitor

spotted this one on the feeder this morning. Will

has spent some time with our resident tree sparrows!
These chirpy birds can be ID'd by their chesntut cap (think: chestnut tree). Sadly, for every tree sparrow we see today, we would've seen 20 in the past!

Nature is not just found in the countryside! As an urban fringe site, RSPB Old Moor is a vital green space. Some species like the peregrine falcon thrive in areas like this, here’s one using a pylon as a perch to get a great vantage point.

Welcome back to RSPB Old Moor. Bittern update, it is possible that there maybe 2 - 3 booming males. Fingers crossed for a productive season, hence the reed bed trail is closed at the Bittern Bus Stop

From Coal Mine to Nature Reserve, today we celebrate the history of Old Moor and the local people that campaigned & fought for our incredible patch of wildlife. Check out these incredible aerial shots from the 1970s to 2019.

Great having Alan Archer on site today for the installation of a plaque dedicated to the "originals" who discovered OM as a haven for wildlife in 1953 with friends Colin and Terence. Documenting their findings the group were instrumental in protecting the site in its infancy.
We’ve got ALL the duck action at Old Moor! Today’s duck count in numbers…

Nature makes us feel good! Finding solace in nature, spending time watching, listening, noticing. I noticed these catkins emerging today, I love the flush of colour they bring to a grey day. What brings you joy?

❗️Visitor John captured this beautiful shot of a Bittern at RSPB Old Moor! It's hard to believe this stunning heron was down to just 11 males in 1997. Today over half of all Bitterns are found on RSPB reserves thanks to the recreation of their wetland habitat. 💚

Bearded tits, AKA reedbed pingers! We’ve heard the distinctive ‘ping’ of bearded tits quite a bit this week. Here's some at Old Moor snapped by Tim Melling &

On Wombwell Ings the first of the Sluice gates have been installed. Their function controls water levels on the flash exposing mud at critical times throughout the year. The gates will hold back water to the ditch preventing nesting disturbance.

Lovely this morning but it got very dark & grey this aft.The male sparrowhawk brightened up the afternoon for many visitors as it sat in a tree for hours giving great views in the TrSF. It then flew to the feeders close to the screen, fab close views! Photo:Nicola OM vol

Ponds in winter may look dormant, but look what local pond expert David Pritchard found in December, pre-lockdown. You can see a nymph launching its mask or lower jaw to catch food in front of it. Never miss a snack opportunity!

#OldMoor
over the last 20 years! It's

from a bleak post industrial landscape, to an oasis for wildlife and people. What are your memories of the last 20 years?
A-Z update.
L is for... locals!
Old Moor wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the foundations built by the local bird watchers. When mining subsidence created a small wetland, Wath Ings, they built a hide and fought for the site to be protected. What we see today is their legacy.
Sit back and enjoy another virtual mindful moment from Old Moor. The birds are singing and the buds are bursting! :)

We feel very lucky to have amber-listed Marsh Harriers on our site. 😍 Visitor Tony managed to capture these stunning shots recently: 'It was 2.30p.m. It’s the closest I have ever seen them fly to the reedbed hide whilst I’ve been there.'

❗️A red-listed Whinchat was spotted at our satellite site Adwick Washlands on Monday! Thanks to visitor Gary for this cracking shot. Whinchat numbers in Britain more than halved between 1995 and 2008. 😞 It's a ☀ Summer Visitor ☀ to the UK and winters in Africa.

This may look like a House Sparrow, but the eagle-eyed amongst you will know this is in fact the red-listed Tree Sparrow. Between 1970 and 2008, they suffered a 93% decline. Whenever we spot one of these pretty birds at Old Moor, there's a flurry of excitement.

Five bags of rubbish removed from around the hide at Bolton Ings yesterday - I certainly chose the better day with the wind and rain today!! It was really great to talk to some local birders, a sense of normality.

Thanks to visitor Mark for this cracking photo.

Wow! 😍 We had to share this incredible shot taken last week at RSPB Old Moor. The Marsh Harrier cuts as a striking figure as the largest of all the harriers in the UK. Unlike most raptors, harriers build their nest on the ground, secreted away in the reedbeds.
📸 Andy Westgarth
Here’s a pic of the spotted crake from the reedbed hide. Not showing just now but we are watching for it to reappear. Back of the camera shot from volunteer Nicola.
