Today, we launch our new campaign, highlighting the vital role played by people working flexibly - and why it works for them. As we face big changes with new tech, and a government with a big regulatory agenda, hearing their voice matters. (1/)
Today we launch our people-first ‘Voice of the Worker’ campaign which champions the UK’s world-leading temporary workforce, showcasing why

Sorry, but I am not going to be upset that the PM’s kids stayed at a friends’ house to keep them away from the limelight during the election campaign and let one of them focus on their exams. Grow up.
Repeat after me, slowly: there is no money saved from cancelling HS2, so it can’t be reallocated. The funding was borrowing against future HS2 ticket revenue…
Have had two kids go through state schools, and spent a decade on academy trust boards. The idea that The Times leads on a tiny fall in numbers in private schools, when the funding crisis in the system that educates 94% of our kids gets no coverage boggles the mind.
Why? Reading have already been fined points in three successive seasons, and the failures are personal to the owner - not the club. The club ceased overspending years ago - they are getting no sporting advantage. Why the sporting penalty?
There is no equivalence between a percentage of people on a largely peaceful march saying things that many of us find offensive, and a bunch of people attacking others - especially the police - on Whitehall on Armistice Day.
Remembrance weekend is a time for us to come together as a nation and remember those who fought and died for our freedoms.
The unacceptable scenes today disrespect their memory.

For an organisation allegedly about member voice,

seem really annoyed by members voting. Like many others, I never voted in

Situation at P&O looks very murky to me. The combo of TUPE law, redundancy law and the ban on replacing staff in a dispute with agency workers would almost certainly render this move illegal onshore. This kind of practice is not what agency labour is for… (1/2)
@FloellaBenjamin
@NsNrs1
Like a million households yesterday, the coronation in our house was punctuated by an “It’s Floella!” from a parent, and then an explanation to the kids…
@MattChorley
There was no need to include the guy's name Matt. I remember back in the 90s someone putting a call from one of my younger female colleagues on speakerphone in their office. Humiliating. He's only doing his job.
Your reminder for this morning: tech bros are not experts in how jobs form or labour markets adapt, and always mix up the elimination of tasks with the elimination of jobs...
I’m 70 miles from home, at Birmingham International, at 7.30 on a Saturday morning. Can only mean one thing - the cinch is back. ‘Mon the famous

EXCL: Ministers will this week change the law to allow striking workers to be replaced temporarily by agency staff.
Too late for this week’s RMT strike but likely to be in force by mid-July
@TEnglishSport
But heads were stuck in sand. As long as Hearts, Partick and Stranraer “took their medicine” everything else would be fine. There is no leadership in Scottish football, other than at a parochial 1 club level.
This has finished me off. I was at every game & event in this video. I lost my best mate last year far too soon - Reading was where we had our adventures. We carry the departed with us. It means something. Hate is a strong word, best used rarely. But I hate that man.
Repealing the ban on agency workers replacing those on strike is the wrong policy - it puts agency workers and agencies in an invidious position, and moves the focus away from resolving the dispute.
@RECPress
will oppose any moves in this direction.
In the face of everything the fact that
@ReadingFC
and
@ReadingFCWomen
both avoided relegation this season is nothing short of spectacular. And the performances at academy level defy belief. There is lots to build on, so long as someone gets out of the way…
Today marks the effective end of almost 14 years

for me. It is a fantastic organisation, full of bright and committed people who really care about making the UK better for everyone. It’s members are the best of business, and are the people who shape what CBI says.
This is the end. Two of our own, the rock on which we were supposed to rebuild, pulled from the team without the knowledge of what coaching staff we have left. A wasteland.
@efl
just as guilty. Administration now. Anything to get the club out of the hands of these criminals.

's good point - fares and the economic benefits of the railway (which last weeks WM planning data showed taking off). Either way - no fares and no HS2 econ benefits = no money to reallocate.
Last week's report from
@loanchargeAPPG
raised some serious questions about the position contractors can find themselves in if they are working via an umbrella. Clearly, working via an umbrella is something that should be driven by the contractor not an agency (1/)

Let me be very clear. If the Government thinks businesses support having no-win-no-fee lawyers in their internal dispute, grievance and disciplinary procedures rather than their own staff of Trade Union reps accompanying employees, they don’t know what they are talking about.
This is my 1st tweet about Home Office pressing ahead on a new immigration system for Jan. Like EVERY BUSINESS IN THE COUNTRY I just didn’t have time for it yesterday. & if this doesn’t teach politicos the lesson that pay, skill and necessity are not interchangeable, what will?
A reminder for this morning: there is no price cap for small businesses, schools or hospitals. The story there is worse, and they mustn’t be forgotten about.
It’s just not true for
@Jesse_Norman
to say biz has had 18months to prepare - the final legislation that businesses will need to prepare their contracts etc will be available less than a month before implementation.
I'm with her. As men in business our job is to call out this wherever we see it - not to claim it is unrepresentative. We need to be allies in making it a thing of the past.
If even half of what’s been written about this event is true, it is deplorable. We want our young women to feel confident and respected in all walks of life. We can and must do better than this.

🔴Asylum seekers who have waited more than a year for a decision can now work to help ease the care home recruitment crisis under a rule change sanctioned by Priti Patel
@matt_dathan
Will never happen. What happens if they test positive? What if they refuse? And, most importantly, why the hell should any biz destroy productivity & antagonise staff by invading private lives like this? If they are drug-affected at work, companies can already deal with this.
Having said he should go further.... HUGELY welcome decision to postpone

I was consistently shocked by offshore maritime employment practice. It’s one thing when vessels are going all over the world. Ships doing 90mins between D & C can afford to employ people like British and French companies.
This is a sensitive and important piece from Mike Atherton, that deserves to be read beyond the sports pages. Hugely in awe of the Thorpe family's openness, at a time like this, which will hopefully help save lives in future.

John - don't be one of those Tories that doesn't believe an opposition should exist... the PMs letter concedes the point, as the advice was as KS said it was. That the Government was wrong on the status of Covid-19 in the country at that point is not a strength.
@Samfr
The stage where - despite having a high employment rate and a challenge with legitimate inactivity driven by illness and other complex needs, we're going to pretend biz can fill all its needs from a plentiful pool of ready domestic labour.
@SquidgeRugby
Yes. But it was a try. There was enough evidence there. Poor work from the TMO. There is an angle that shows the ball over the line, and an angle clearly showing it on the ground. 2+2=4.

Glad I wasn’t alone. I was already grumbling before the idea of people wanting honesty from their politicians came up and he said Farage and Trump “speak truth to power”. Through the looking glass stuff.

Welcome, but partial. It’s not only about the Black Ferns. It was every level of the women’s and girls game, the language that put women in a position of only enabling men, and the choice of some of the men you highlighted. If you are listening, you can be specific.
Absolutely delighted to be hosting
@AmberRuddHR
here
@RECmembers
HQ this morning. We share a commitment to making sure the
#futureofwork
delivers for workers. That means making flexibility & new tech works for people, not turning the clock back.
I hope this is spin. Because we need health and social care workers, logistics and hospitality staff badly. Policy must allow for shortages in lower paid (not lower skilled!!) roles. Time for a grown up debate on
#immigration
Small bit of good news on
#IR35
as government ready to confirm that changes only apply to services delivered on/after April 6 which will simplify things a little bit. BUT the big issues remain - we still need to pause for a proper review.
Off to
@RECmembers
HQ this morning for the first time since March, as we prep for opening it up on Sept 1. The
@RECPress
team have been brilliant from home - but it’s time to give people the option of a safe, socially distanced office.

The challenge of proposals around strike law - as with reg 7 & agency work last year - is that moving quickly in response to a single dispute leads to poor outcomes. The aim of laws should be channel and resolve such conflicts - because attempts to eliminate them will fail (1/2)
@seatsixtyone
The sadness of this is that - for the moment - regulars like us know how to get around it. The irregular 50/50 traveller is being stung and pushed to the plane.
I have been a school governor for over a decade. The idea that the PM is trying to sell record funding for schools is laughable. Every year is a struggle to make ends meet without damaging kids’ experience. Say that when we are getting more per pupil in real terms.
#PMQs
…and I am not convinced what we are dealing with here is agency work in the sense that the public understand it. Far more likely that P&O are handing the entire management of their ships over to another (foreign?) company. (2/2)
This is a new REC. Making great work happen by helping members to make a difference. A bolder, clearer voice that is easier for

Listening to a Brum biz owner saying it might be better for his kids not to come into biz & go for a profession instead
@BBCr4today
is heartbreaking. Cost pressures on biz now, after the tumult of the past two years are immense. There is no levelling up without strong local biz.
When I say I think better buses are a huge part of improving labour market outcomes, people are surprised. This article sets out why I believe it really well. Authorities looking for growth should fund reliable affordable services. People will use them.
Good to share

Big day for

I remember Coca Cola execs lecturing the business group on their view of business and human rights at the ILO for years. Invariably, protecting their company’s position at the cost of a wider business group goals. Today, we see who they really are.

A couple of thoughts that were brought out by this piece on shortages by Sarah, which is well worth your time. Firstly, let’s not kid ourselves. The origin of pricing pressure on companies - and therefore on wage awards - is all of us as consumers. (1/)
The story of Britain’s empty shelves, like that of its unpicked strawberries and unprocessed chickens, is of how migration combined with a badly regulated labour market and v.powerful retailers have allowed some things to become unsustainably cheap.
We regret the removal of the ban on agency workers replacing strikers passing the Lords, which puts agencies and agency workers in a difficult position. Even when the law changes, it’s vital for
@RECmembers
to take care in these situations - as there are big risks involved.
