Hours after getting a fresh coat of paint, the Pride mural downtown was vandalized again. But the queer community and their allies are rallying around the flag, which is still bright on the pavement. "We're here. We’re not going anywhere," the artist said.
We are once again reminded of the quote from the mural's artist, Tiffany Patterson. “If it happens again, we’ll paint it again,” they said. “We’re here. We’re not going anywhere.”
Shea's trip to Ukraine may well have had humanitarian goals: a rescue operation to retrieve his wife's family and orphans in genuinely dire need with at least a tangential connection to Spokane.
IF WE GIVE REGULAR PEOPLE THE TOOLS AND INFORMATION NEEDED TO DEMAND BETTER OF THEIR ELECTED OFFICIALS, WE CAN MAKE THE INLAND NORTHWEST BETTER FOR EVERYONE RATHER THAN JUST THOSE WITH MONEY AND POWER

went to the press conference Sheriff Knezovich had called hoping to understand why he had decided to jump into the middle of the Camp Hope saga after months of seemingly having nothing at all to do with it.
But we were turned away.

Antifascist scholars will speak at the library this Sunday. We talked to them about the history of fascism in Spokane, all the many varieties of antifascism and how (not) to approach people who harbor fascist ideologies.
What an unbelievable loss for our community.
Our hearts go out to Sandy's family, loved ones, and everyone she touched at the Black Lens and the Carl Maxey Center.

For 3 years, students in Jacob Knight’s 5th-grade classroom in Mead thrived. When he came out as gay, complaints started rolling in, and within a year, he was gone, the district paying him half a year’s salary to resign and not sue. Read the story here:
Last week, we broke away from our usual publishing schedule of 1-2 articles per week to put our focus on Camp Hope every single day during this heat wave. 🧵

It's vitally important to hold power to account, especially when it wants to act with such impunity.
We’ll keep looking for the answers to our questions, whether or not it’s the Sheriff offering them to us.

Forever chemicals have made groundwater unsafe across the West Plains. Spokane International Airport officials knew for years they were partly to blame, but kept it quiet.
The walk was arduous for a healthy man and would be impossible for others. The bus system out to Trent is intermittent & complicated to navigate, requiring a transfer, which can leave folks sitting outside at the unsheltered stop for long periods of time.
As Spokane City Council considers denouncing Mayor Woodward for her participation in a Christian nationalist concert, the worship pastor responsible is casting himself as a martyr and fundraising off it.

"So: don’t engage. They’re looking for trouble, don’t give it to them. Watch out for friends & neighbors. Advise nearby bars & cafes that they might come in trying to find some liquid courage. Stay strong & stay safe!" <-- advice from locals who track & study white nationalism
After more than 6 years of patchwork testing and remediation of a chemical spill no one truly knows the scale of, a new water program paid for by the EPA will greatly expand the testing area & get a more holistic picture of the poison in West Plains wells.
