When I was a small student I emailed Ed Witten and asked him what I should do and he actually responded and he suggested condensed matter theory, and that's how he became my great-great-grand advisor (a fact I found out like 8 minutes ago lol)
I asked myself if the name-calling in this tweet by a tenured professor is really necessary, and then remembered that unwarranted hostility and bullying toward younger people having fun with science by senior members of the academy is central to scientific culture.. 1/2
Perhaps this was an OVEREACH as we know nothing about livestreaming or twitch We have now been assured by several 12-year olds that livestreaming could satisfy the slow/incremental/detailed/frustrating/boring criteria, we still worry about nasty chemicals compromising the fun
Emailed an old advisor of mine, well known SC theorist, to ask his opinion on the situation and he hasn't read any of the papers related to

nor does he seem interested lol. Which is probably the correct response, in contrast to the blue check fueled twitter frenzy

Here is a live demonstration of it 'accepting quantum logic gates addressing n registers and returning the correct distribution on the Deutsch-Jozsea algorithm!!
Truly remarkable stuff. Perform n-qubit computations on the bus to class! All this for $29.99 (*)!!
imma be so personally mad if there is an SC phase protected by doping disorder because I was laughed out of a faculty office in gradschool for the suggestion lol
Baby book man turning out to be an insufferable jerk whilst dying on the hill that a raspberry pi running qiskit-on-rails is by definition a quantum computer was not on my 2024 bingo card lol.
@AustenLamacraft
Guys the 'BAND' is 'FLAT' which can ONLY MEAN that the nobel prize is imminent and world is about to CHANGE FOREVER
Here are 5 markets to invest in RIGHT NOW π§΅
In all seriousness, there are different levels of care that companies need to take for defining the capabilities and descriptions of a product. I take this very seriously.
The big issue here is the information asymmetry between the intended consumer and the company ..
@csferrie
@ericcavalcanti
π I honestly donβt know where to start.
You know what weβre all going on about, and youβre refusing to engage in an honest discussion about it.
You know, and we know, the quokka system is not a QC. But youβve convinced yourself that definitions donβt matter anymore?
(1/n) One thing I've always been bad at in academics is marketing and advertising my research works to the community. I know a lot of this comes down to inherited clout from co-authors, but curious if anyone has suggestions for improving in this area. I try to tie in with ...
The last week really exemplifies why moderated spaces are important. When one person with a lot of public visibility goes off the edge and starts behaving abusively, there needs to be moderation to keep things in bounds.
The power differential between the public figure and the

not an endorsement of the twitch stream as I don't know the details (though I think that it's fun, who doesn't like a good show). I'd hope that the streamer, owning equipment do to high temperature direct reactions,and ability to order chemicals, can read MSDS
@csferrie
You've directly and personally insulted multiple of my colleagues on this platform for honest questions right after your product announcement -- from a position of power as a university professor and author of popsci books. You are not a victim here.
We have such a long way to go. This post is referring to the lack of women in physics, responding to a well researched thread by a woman physicist. Troll or not, this account is followed by a bunch of high profile physicists and companies, claims to have partnerships with QCs
At the point of paper writing where I have thought about the thing so much I keep wondering if the thing is actually incredibly trivial and not worth publishing. Yay!
The thing I look forward to the most about the end of the quantum hype cycle (impossible) is eventually being able to express mostly-cynical but not absolutely-hopeless views freely, without peppering on 80 layers of nuance to ANTIHYPE what I'm saying so I'm not shunned
@jmlepstein
Brian Greene essentially rage baited me to do physics by alleging the universe has precisely 11 dimensions over a rendition of bach cello suite

.
@jmlepstein
As a consequence there are poorly written rants scattered thru the now fossilized web 1.0 neopets & gaiaonline forums from 12 y.o. me about how stupid and arbitrary the number 11 is so the theory can't be right and that I would study physics and come up with something better π
@boundstate
^^^ PSA: the way CMTC could have phrased their message rather than calling everyone that disagrees with them 12-year-olds. Notice how Evan is not insulting people for the content they enjoy but is directly taking issue with the final possibly negative outcome measuredly
Yesterday I had a fantastic team building hike with members of the

Quantum Applications Team, in sunny Santa Barbara!
We reflected on our excellent experience attending the

conference, "Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum Systems: Advances and Applications"
Fwiw. I stand by my previous post. The baby book guy is behaving like a jerk and wrote wildly abusive & insulting messages to a bunch of people, including young scientists in vulnerable demographics.
Update: got call back from coast guard. Fuel exchange with out engine. They are manualling siphoning fuel between engines and we are moving at 9kts.. things are OK for now
Recently got into gamedev as a hobby and it's 80% refactoring <class> into more abstract <class> until you have a 20 level hierarchy to handle unequiping a sword sprite, and 20% fooling oneself into believing you can make your own assets but you'll buy this
Quantum error correction is a daunting topic to get started in. Last week at the KITP,
@victorvalbert
did an amazing job not only breaking down the fundamentals of qec codes, but also connecting them in pedagogical sequence. I highly recommend giving his overview talk a watch!
I feel that physics papers are getting unbearably long these years, making both reading and writing a big headache. Where did the sweet old days go when good theory papers were only four pages?
need to describe the product using the mean language and expectations of the public. I feel very strongly about this as someone who ran and developed undergraduate labs for thousands of students at an R1. The power imbalance/information is incredible and
@subhanusaxena
It's a fun topic to study and hard to earn a career in, but ultimately closer to a math program than physics. Same goes for some parts of Condensed Matter theory
My grandma identifies as Taino and having the day off for

is the perfect excuse to deep dive into lost culture, get angry, and look for ways to integrate the past with present.
Sitting in a CMT talk right now for the first time in a while. The toxicity level of some of the audience is π€―. No wonder me and all of my colleagues were severely depressed and self-loathing in gradschool
Flying back from a team/company meeting right now and reflecting. I think I get to work with -- and learn from -- some of the coolest people in this industry and I couldn't ask for more π
explain what the device is. They may also trust the company because of the PR record of associated academics and partners. They have minimal defenses against an ad that clearly states that the device is a "30 qubit quantum computer", implying that is it something that they ..
i couldn't sleep last night because i simulated a circuit but forgot to add the noise model and didn't realize until after i reformatted my paper for Science
Posted today, our paper contains a surprising twist. The complex conjugate of a quantum state can provide exponential advantages in learning. The learning task we look at is motivated from bosonic physics. Check it out:

@JarrodMcclean

If this leaves you questioning what algorithms *should* run on cold atoms (a fantastic blue-sky research question), come stop by my ieee talk to see some brand-new techniques being developed at Atom. Or wait for my poorly written conference stub to hit arxiv
@QuantumManuel
Even then if I was determined to do a variational algorithm using a parameterized circuit I'd do some VQE with a local ansatz on a SC device. I really mean it no QAOA on atomic devices you will be waiting O(days) for small optimization problems
I figured out that I'm in The Bad Place because as of recent I need to do 2FA --> forgot password --> forgot username?? --> forgot password --> text me a code! --> 2FA --> 2FA for password manager --> suspicious login 2FA again --> ?? on literally ever site I go to, every time
The intended consumer for this product is high-schoolers. The median high-schooler nor their parents, or even their educators are capable of negotiating the finer details of DiVincenzo's criteria. They likely do not have access to professionals in the quantum space to clearly ..
@Scatter_Cushion
@MegaDarren
I think that spots physically result from mechanical Turing patterning so developmental biologists/biophysicists might have some points to add, too!
@quantum_graeme
OTOH I've seen way worse use cases/job posts lol. At least they have their hands in ab initio chemistry, graph theory, optimization and distribution sampling (phylogenetic trees/sequencing problems), all things which have seemed ~somewhat~ nisq plausible at some point in time
@quantum_graeme
I haven't seen this in industry yet, or ever felt like my position has been contingent on doing things outside of my comfort zone morally. I've seen postdocs fired for wanting to not publish questionable data. Like all things, depends on your specific team/company etc. π€·ββοΈ
tell you). However, the industrial, scientific, and venture communities are filled with SMEs that can delineate the finer points of a press release and ask the right questions.
That is not the same for the education and student community. An entirely separate set of standards
