This 1992 pub walk book was a xmas gift from my niece. My first thought was "I wonder how many of the pubs in it are still open?", so I thought I would do some research and find out! A thread... 1/
Have just been given a fantastic
@TimothyTaylors
gift from my local
@grapesslingsby
- although I’m drinking Boltmaker rather than Landlord! This will be worn plenty until Spring arrives!
#pub
A quick half of
@thornbridge
Jaipur to welcome me back to Yorkshire and to escape the cold while I’m waiting for my next train!
@YorkTap
- York train station! Bit empty this evening but they’re aren’t many trains so it’s not really surprising!

When I found out there was a pub called The Victoria close to my hotel in Bristol I couldn’t not go - especially as it was on route to where I was going! Corner pub, tucked in a street by the lido! Could smell the chlorine outside!
#pub
#bristol
First pub of the day was The Blacksmiths Arms , Lastingham - very friendly people but sadly not dog friendly so Brin couldn’t go inside but luckily it was a sunny winter day so we could get a drink outside!

@PintsDrank
Of the 31 pubs in the book I was surprised/pleased to find out that 29 were still open- although only 26 I would now say where open as a pub (with others becoming hotels, restaurants etc). 2/
It took me until the 11th day of 2024 to make it to the pub due to illness- still not 100% but I did make it to my local -
@grapesslingsby
did not disappoint, and the
@TimothyTaylors
Landlord was just what I needed!

It’s my birthday so obviously I celebrated at a pub - food and drinks at the wonderful
@PloughWombleton
- beer, wine (including a Thai Chenin Blanc), scallops, risotto, steak, chips, cheesecake - all with a welcoming and friendly environment!
#beer
#pubs
@BlackSheepBeer
You know you’re heading to the right conference when they send a map of the conference venues that also includes great local pubs to visit
@DrinkingStudies
#pubs
Stopped off on my walk back to the hotel at the delightful
@HighburyVaults
- lovely multi spaced/roomed traditional pub- talk of Strasbourg, changing room sex and demonic rituals (i.e. good pub conversations!) Train carrying seahorses runs length of the pub!

Very excited to be working on this MOOC with the
@UniOfYork
Centre for Lifelong Learning - still a way to go until it is time to launch (autumn 2023) but it’s been fun so far

Starting the bank holiday weekend with a banana smoothie in a

BEER magazine overlooking the garden! Beer will have to wait until I have done some work in said garden! Just need it not to rain!

It’s my one year anniversary of being on Twitter (note that I did not say X) - thought the best way to celebrate was the way I started - with a pint in my local

This popped up on my twitter feed and reminded me of something I love to do but just don't make the time to do- solo pub pints- I work from home a lot so really don't have an excuse not to! Maybe it should be my (late) new years resolution!
@agladman
Visit to
@TheGood_Measure
for some
@GoodChemBrew
beers! Including a pint of 0.5% Tiny Dancer! Lovely atmosphere, good beers, interestingly positioned cellar door hatch (in front of the bar) which made everyone jump when it was closed suddenly!
#beer

#DSN24
Quick visit to the
@TheOxfordBar1
for a pint of
@FyneAles
Jarl! My first time visiting and I loved it! I was a bit freaked out by the silence (not lack of people but no music) when I first arrived but warmed to it as I did some work- a good pub for a beer and a read!
#pub
Which they have been able to do I'm guessing because they have high levels of tourists and visitors. Sadly I don't think a sample of pubs from a non tourist area would have the same survival rate and I doubt many would have survived without diversification? 5/
Heading out to a few pubs later but have had to restrain our selection because we’ll be taking Brindle our dog with us- We’re spoilt in North Yorkshire as almost all pubs welcome dogs but it’s not always the case elsewhere! Who wouldn’t want this cuteness in their pub?!
#pub
#dog
So what surprised me was that the survival rate is high, but looking through the websites and social media of these pubs it is clear that they have survived through diversification- mostly focusing on accommodation and an enhanced food offering. 4/
Before my 5 hour train journey a visit to
@KingsHeadBS1
-
@GoodChemBrew
you may be biased but it is absolutely beautiful! Sunny afternoon vibes with some great music and friendly staff! And a pint of Pure Optimism! Perfect way to finish the
@DrinkingStudies
conference!
#dsn24
It seemed sensible to do a pub research meeting with
@NWaehning
and
@KateArnold14
in the pub! A visit to The Plough in Fulford, York - lively and busy on a Monday, a 0.5%
@Adnams
Ghost Ship, Sprout the spaniel puppy was centre of attention and the food was good!
#pub
The Horse Shoe, Glasgow - apparently the longest continuous bar in the UK! Great original features- mirrors, tiles, call bells- and welcoming on a soggy Glasgow afternoon! First visit for
@thistleprof
since 1987!
#pub
#beer
Quick, pre comedy, half at the Blue Bell, York - very lucky to get in on a busy Sunday! We sat next to a group of ladies who were still on the Prosecco (at 19:00) after a bottomless brunch & guys in the corridor were discussing a national shortage of psychiatrists!

#beer
Final stop of the evening is the Kings Head (just for
@norfolknog1
) - lovely Friday evening vibe, good beers and nice and cool after the hot day!
#pub
Lunch visit to
@StoneTroughInn
- busy with people eating and a good choice of cask ales and beers! A great view for summer outside pints but far too windy and cold today!

Very excited to have had my abstract accepted for presentation at the

Headed out today for Pub walk number 11 from The Pub Walks in the North York Moors book! Decided to start it in Hutton-le-Hole so we could have lunch there afterwards!

Great to see the Birch Hall Inn getting good coverage after being named by National Geographic as a top 12 best UK pub. I wonder if this sort of coverage will bring in a very different clientele this year and mean it is constantly full?
#pubs
Afternoon beer garden pint at The Village Inn in West Runton, Norfolk - first pub I have been to that has a surf report, 4 hand pull cask beers, and a lovely large beer garden!
#pub
Friday afternoon pint at the Royal Hotel in Runswick Bay! Cosy as the sun went down, great pint of
@ossettbrewery
- and heading back for food this evening!

Great to be part of YorkTalks 2024 yesterday celebrating pubs and pub consumers - to be honest it was great to just be out of the house as I am finally recovering from a 🦠 new year!

A quick half of

Orkney IPA (very tasty)
@GuildfordArms

@StewartBrewing
Pentland IPA!

Bit of 1973 pub related reading (with some fabulous photographs) on the plane back from Gdansk - I’m very interested in why the Royal College of Psychiatrists (

Wise words - “…..ultimately, it isn’t really important whether something is a micropub, taproom, brewpub or something else entirely. The important thing is supporting quality beer, served by knowledgeable staff, wherever you are lucky enough to find it.”

Quick pre theatre stop at the Harrogate Tap - located on the railway station, vast quantities of wood panelling and a great variety of beers!

Holiday cottage must have known I was coming - old copy of

1 has become a community pub and it looks like one is for sale, with the community hoping to buy it. Only 4 of the remaining pubs are listed in the

GBG for anyone wondering. 3/
