Just worked out we spend around 26k a year with our local butcher. If he loses this income on top of his already increasing fixed costs, how does he survive? Hospitality feeds the economy…it’s not just another pub closing.

A VAT reduction to 12.5% would have saved just one of our pubs 8k in VAT this quarter, this is money that could have been used to reinvest in our staff and the business as well as keeping prices lower for customers. It’s not wasted money. It goes back into the economy.

The Craven Arms in Brockhampton Glos is closing indefinitely. Having been there 18 years and made it through covid turmoil, the landlady can no longer viably continue due to rising costs. 18 years of hard work…heartbreaking. #notjustapub

So many of our ex staff come back to us years later & attribute working for us in the pubs with a growth in confidence that has been a massive asset in later life. The amount of first time jobs for young people the industry creates should not be underestimated.

Also remember that for every hospitality business closure there are companies down the supply chain losing money, maybe £500 a week for the butcher, £800 for the beer supplier, Fresh Produce Supplier, Waste Company…the list goes on.

When independent pubs, bars, shops, cafes & restaurants start to leave High Sts, the areas rapidly become run down & unkempt, we see barbers & vape stores where butchers & cafes once stood. Litter on streets, crime increases, tourism declines. Never underestimate small business!

Let’s be clear, if the chancellor freezes beer duty, prices in pubs will still go up in April. Pubs will not benefit, you will not benefit…we will still see other prices go up across the board and pubs are no longer in any position to swallow this! The only way is to #CutVAT

How would a cut in VAT to 10% help your business? Initially its survival but also for us it would help us reinvest in our pubs and our team as well as avoiding massive price increases. It’s not about extra profit & the money would make its way back in to the economy. #cutVAT

Well…it was tough. Reckon I was in the corner on the first 3 rounds but came out fighting in the 4th-10th. I genuinely feel like some MPs have no idea about the plight of hospitality & hopefully I’ve just educated one. I very much hope he does what he says he will.

Also while I’m having a little rant, just because we work in hospitality, it does mean that we have to put up with people being rude and disrespectful. I won’t put up with it myself and I certainly won’t put up with it for my staff. Entitlement and rudeness is vulgar.

What we need on job sites like Indeed is a function where we can flag candidates who are no shows to job interviews to stop everyone else wasting their effing time on people who have no intention of showing up!!
