Sad to hear humanities & social sciences students described as having “quite an easy life” on
@BBCr4today
… not a description I recognise of students engaging with the world in all kinds of complex ways. Apprenticeships are great; thoughtless binaries destructive.
Day 1 in the new office and what a day for it.
@RoyalHolloway
open day in full swing. Thanks to all the student ambassadors and colleagues welcoming & inspiring everyone today!
To everyone today
@UniofNewcastle
who has cleaned a room, taken home a praying mantis for a holiday, fixed something, posted a lecture online, helped someone, got stiff scaring at a screen in a meeting discussion - thank you. You are ALL amazing.
#weareNCL
This is me 6 years ago sitting in the Borneo rainforest (clearly with a good supply of beer and crisps!!) planning walks to see orang utan and writing a press release for the
@UniofNewcastle
team having just accepted a job as a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
Had been feeling low level anxious so we decided to walk it off ... and finally got to see an otter on the Tyne. Absolutely magical watching it swim, fish and then haul its catches onto the mudflats. So lucky. Sometimes nature catches you in its embrace. 🐟🦦
#countingmyblessings
I may regret this but going to try and do a twitter advent celebrating some of the great stuff that has taken place
@UniofNewcastle
this year ... so today I am going to start with
@NUEstates
teams who have kept going through it all & kept campus looking beautiful & here for us.
So very very proud that
@UniofNewcastle
is 8th in the world for its work on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It means the world to see the collective effort of our whole community on social & environmental justice acknowledged here 🌎🌱

Friday night supper on the beach

with wine is pretty splendid in itself but to see a pod of dolphins passing by and even leaping out of the water was a bit of a dream come true.

Office door closed on my first term
@RoyalHolloway
Grateful to everyone who helped me through but in a world when educational opportunities & basic freedoms are being denied to so many also grateful for what we can make happen as a place of learning & welcome every day. 🎄✨❤️🎓
What an amazing thing to honour on International Women’s Day in the year of Bedford College’s 175th anniversary too. Proud & privileged to have a small chance to represent the 2 women’s colleges who are the bedrock of
@RoyalHolloway
today.
#InternationalWomensDay
I am loving the sense of us sharing the sky and a sense of wonder all over the UK tonight. Stunning end to a special day - Northern Lights Over Founders Building. Not something I ever imagined typing …✨
When the honorary degree recipient Shaka Hislop takes time to meet with a major fan from our wonderful

team a little bit of graduation magic happens in the room

@SRTRC_England
Quite a week; said goodbye to one amazing job & place & a tentative but happy hello to new one; met inspirational individuals; celebrated awesome 1st Shakespeare production with
@ShakespeareNP
team, continued to be inspired by team
@The_Globe
… & yes I do know how lucky I am …
Two years since I started this role and today feels like nothing I could have imagined then. University Council meeting on Zoom, virtual meetings to try and support students at a really tough time. And a life in lockdown. But still a
#proudDVC
for all that.
#WeareNCL
Well that was ridiculously moving. Honour to preside over our first in person graduation ceremony
@UniofNewcastle
since 2019. So meaningful for everyone in the room to be gathered again in our beautiful King’s Hall to mark this special occasion for the brilliant Class of 2020 🎓
So that’s it - 100 days officially in the role of Principal
@RoyalHolloway
& both me & the university community seem to be just about standing … 🤓 thanks to everyone who has helped, smiled, laughed, shared, enabled & supported me in recent weeks …

Someone just pointed out to me it is 5 years this week since I joined
@UniofNewcastle
... hard to believe & a lot to grapple with right now but thank you to the amazing colleagues & students, past & present, who’ve been there for me & inspired me every step of the way.
#proudDVC
Okay emotional one this. This has been one of the hardest weeks of my working career, but endlessly grateful for the efforts and care and creativity of
@UniofNewcastle
colleagues and students and for our friends and partners not least the amazing

So proud of collective effort that led to our recognition as a University of Sanctuary. Heartfelt thanks to all the colleagues, students & community advisors who made this possible. To be a university of welcome & refuge is a marvellous & important thing.
Like other Unis we’ll be doing everything we can at Newcastle to support students and make sure as many as possible can start the academic year with us studying the subjects they want to. And thanks to all the colleagues helping to try to make this happen.
#WeAreNCL
We welcome today’s announcement to honour teacher-assessed grades and we are delighted to confirm that we will accept students who meet the terms of their original offer with us here at Newcastle University. View our latest statement 👉

Watching some parts of the sector taking chunks out of others today & while I understand the anxiety & perceived bias it often stems from it isn’t helpful for any of us. Universities are amazing places & collectively we will do our very best for this year’s applicants. Together.
On the eve of a General Election & a day after the anniversary of the 1928 Equal Franchise Act I reflect on the amazing link between
@RoyalHolloway
& the women’s suffrage movement. Proud to have worked with our Students Union to advocate for the power of a voice & a vote. 🗳️
Feeling a bit broken by the news feed today I will confess. But tomorrow is another day & will bring more rich conversations with colleagues sharing passions or just trying to make things work, students finding their purpose & that is what I will lean into & lean on to find hope
7 years ago I had just lived through my first major typhoon, watched my home go under & waded out in the middle of the night through high waters. Remembering this to remind myself we get through & that usually we get through because of the love, kindness & support of others. 🌈
So today I got my first vaccine dose. Partner booked in soon too. And spring really does feel like it is here.
Thanks to all the kind people looking after us today at the Monkseaton centre.

The use of terms like “fierce” “ugly” and “fear” here surely cannot be how we want to work or be viewed as a sector? Today of all days can we please think carefully about the language and images we deploy and the behaviours we model?
“
@UniversitiesUK
needs to become a high-profile, agenda-setting, proactive, ubiquitous and deeply respected powerhouse. It needs to get fierce and ugly at times…Fear precedes respect – and willingness to change tack.”
Colleagues
@UniofNewcastle
past and present have gathered today to mark the retirement of Dr John Hogan our Registrar. End of an era but so much love and laughter in the room which says everything about the man.
So that is me putting the Out of Office message on the work stuff for a while … Wishing everyone
@UniofNewcastle
& Twitter friends a peaceful time over the coming days. Whether you are celebrating or not, I hope you find time for the things you love & the ones you love. ✨✨✨

Got a date with the long suffering husband tonight and we are off to get takeaway pizza. Impossibly excited and wondering whether I need to dress up for the occasion. 🤔👗👠🍕
Very excited and just a little daunted to have signed the contract to edit Henry IV Part 1 for the new CUP series overseen by the brilliant & inspiring general editorial team of
@mj_kidnie
@soniamassai69
& Gillian Wood working with Emily Hockley at the Press.
Another advantage of a very early morning walk to campus to give an international research talk online today was my meeting with some of our beautiful fellow residents. 🦌🌅
Today marks one whole amazing, exhilarating, challenging & exhausting month in the new role
@RoyalHolloway
& of missing but continuing to feel the love & support of colleagues
@UniofNewcastle
… So I’ll take that as a great month. Happy Hallowe’en 🎃
Very proud of what being 11th in the world says about our values-led University and commitment to the

. So proud too of the collective effort this represents. 🌍🌱🦧💧♻️
To the young woman I spoke to on the train tonight, you are grace personified and it might not feel like it right now but things will get better and over time you will find your own purpose and way in the world and you will be amazing. Take care.
Never prouder ... MBBS Class of 2020 we honour your achievements and commitment. Cheering and clapping you with all my heart from lockdown. 👏🏽👏👏🏾👏🏻👏🏿🎓🎓🎓💙💙💙

This week I served on an appointment panel for said Uni and there was an explicit commitment in the team to equality, diversity, and inclusion issues. I remembered that wee lass and how sad she felt that day. I hope she would be proud. Life come full circle in a good way. 2/2
Emotional and heartfelt thank you to our retiring Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Education
@UniofNewcastle
Suzanne Cholerton at an online event today. An amazing contribution with students always at the heart. She will be much missed.
Proud that

is flying the European flag today and asserting why it is a global community and expressing our appreciation and support for all our European colleagues, students, alumni and partners. For the World. 🌎 and thanks to

for beautiful ✨
Never tire of seeing this mural in Ouseburn. Nice excuse to walk past in the daylight en route to an off campus meeting today.

Feel so powerless to stop the piecemeal dismantling of the cultural sector right now. It has given me so much over the years and we all risk so much if we don’t fight for its survival. To everyone in theatre struggling just now, I am sorry. I care.

Today we signalled our commitment to climate change action by joining organisations around the world in declaring a climate emergency.
As part of this declaration we've committed to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2040.

To
@LNER
teams who battled those they could home to Newcastle last night & to beloved partner who went above & beyond to walk to station with wet weather gear for me I am very grateful to have woken up at home today. Hope everyone w/o power gets sorted soon. Stay safe. Be kind.
Thanks to everyone
@UniofNewcastle
who has managed to keep another week on the rails. For teaching, marking, studying, mentoring, sorting, testing, examining data, providing books, fixing stuff, training people, being on panels, being kind, being there - thank you.
