Tara Hollingshead is home after an OH appeals court vacated her first-of-its-kind conviction and 8-12 year sentence for pregnancy and substance use. As these Ohio-based physicians make clear, these prosecutions are dangerous and legally impermissible.🧵

Trending for her brilliant refutation of Sen. Hawley's transphobic line of questioning, our Board member, @BerkeleyLaw Professor Khiara Bridges, also made brilliant points about the flawed reasoning in the #Dobbs majority opinion & how overturning Roe harms people of color:

Today, on what might be the last anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, we need to remember that we are not just defending #Roe , or even the right to abortion. We're also defending the civil and human rights of women and all those with the capacity for pregnancy. (1/3) #Roe49

Our society loves to valorize pregnant people and mothers, but only if they meet certain rigid standards. What would our world look like if all mothers received support without question or qualification?

This is what happens when people make laws while ignoring the ramifications. Pregnant people suffer, and it's heartbreaking and infuriating. Abortion is healthcare.

Marshae Jones' case is the latest outrageous use of anti-abortion and "fetal personhood" ideology. The recently passed anti-abortion, anti-women laws are a declaration of war on women and will be used to incarcerate more Black, Brown & poor people. Help free Ms. Jones!

Lauren Smith faces ten years in prison in South Carolina for testing positive for marijuana at labor. She gave birth to a healthy daughter but didn't get to take her baby home. With fetal personhood laws in place, pregnant people are criminalized—regardless of birth outcome.

We are outraged that @GovKemp has signed HB 481, an abortion law that is really a "fetal personhood" measure. Make no mistake, this law denies women their inalienable rights, equal protection and due process of the law in Georgia.

"Fetal personhood", as @ms_creilly explains beautifully for @RewireNewsGroup , is an intentional & offensive distraction from fights for equality & justice for communities whose rights--to vote, to healthcare, to education--have never been fully realized:

An Alabama woman spent 36 hours in Etowah County jail after being arrested for allegedly using drugs while pregnant. But she wasn't even pregnant. This is another example of Etowah County recklessly targeting people for control, not to protect children.

There’s no “right” way to grieve or handle fetal remains. Ask anybody who has had a stillbirth or miscarriage—it’s a nightmare scenario, and fetal personhood measures add criminalization into the mix. No one who's lost a pregnancy should have to deal w/prosecution, end of story.
