The politics of race within the Jewish community in Israel are odd. The Mirazhi were undeniably treated with patronizing contempt by European Jews, and they resented it
However, they’re also the bedrock vote of many right wing parties and have no sympathy for Palestinians at all
The fact that the woman being touted as “one of Israel’s greatest artists” being like an old school 1960s level anti-Mirazhi racist is really something

I've heard of the woke toddler bit, but I think this is the first time where the person is saying they were the toddler instead of just putting words in their kids mouth.
@CathyReisenwitz
That’s fine, you can just make Marge Simpson-like worried noises at the screen whenever something funny happens while you’re watching it.

I know for a fact that many pre-Colombian societies had laws regarding how cases of rape were to be handled so I cannot fathom where you are pulling this idea from.

*taps chart* As we all know, Polish descended Jews have historically ranked higher in the whiteness ratings than Irish-American Catholics

Love when right wing dorks suddenly care about preserving the supremacy of the federal government when it comes to drug policy.
They can also often be quite racist towards the Ethiopian Jewish community so there’s obviously not much of a sense of a shared experience of racial marginalization there.
One thing to keep in mind: while they were targets of xenophobia and racist fears, the Mizhari experience is not analogous to many racially marginalized groups in the US for one crucial reason: they were still part of the desired religious group for the colonial project.
One can draw tentative comparisons to groups like Italian Americans or Slavic Americans who were viewed as suspect upon arrival, but still were ultimately assimilated into the ruling hegemonic society over time.

They both took a great amount of technical skill.
I’m sure a lot of you think you could do a cubist style painting that would pass muster with the art world in a few hours of work. You couldn’t.

It's funny, a lot of these guys considers themselves defenders of Western culture, but they don't seem to actually like any Western cultural achievements from the last 150 years or so.
Watching far right Eastern Europeans play with decolonial language is funny because it will start off relatively tame and quickly descend into something like "And now I'd like to take a DECOLONIAL perspective on the Romanian Iron Guard"

The Japanese ended up in quite a few places within the Spanish empire. If I recall correctly, a decent amount of samurai who got trapped abroad when the Tokugawa shogunate closed Japan's borders ended up in Mexico or the Philippines.
The presumption that Bushnell must have been mentally ill is very telling of certain blind spots in the worldview of liberals. Believing in something enough to die for it is unthinkable to them.
I'll note that liberals mostly saw John Brown as an obvious madmen until recently.
I strongly oppose valorizing any form of suicide as a noble, principled, or legitimate form of political protest. People suffering mental illness deserve empathy and respect, but it is wildly irresponsible to praise them for using a political justification to take their own life.

Guess I’ll need to hold onto this bad boy… snagged it a yard sale for fairly cheap. The kids are giving it a real beating but it’s still holding up.

There’s an interesting study to be made of how the pickup truck went from being a utilitarian vehicle for blue collar manual laborers to an expression of affluent suburbanite hostility and paranoia.

Americans think their civil war is hardcore because it had over half a million deaths. Meanwhile, the Chinese killed 20 million during their civil war around the same time

At the time, the 40 hour work week represented a triumph of the working class movement. However, we've drifted away from it (many jobs in reality require closer to 60-70 hours now). I always thought the point of technology was to free us from labor but that's gone by the wayside
I've saw someone refer to Joyce Messier's character as 'the only good person in Disco Elysium'.
That's an... interesting read on her character. She's very intelligent and charismatic, yes. She's also the epitome of amoral cynicism. She's a female Talleyrand.

Lula going to prison this past decade was literally the result of a US-encouraged lawfare operation (“operation car wash”) to cripple him and his party, the PT.

Many Americans seem to structure what remaining sense of a communal identity they still have around the various security apparatuses of the country (cops, the military, intelligence agencies, etc.)
Probably not a good thing!

Corbyn placed nice with the Labour right despite their constant whining about an incipient purge.
Then when the Labour right regained power, they did not hesitate to begin kicking out anyone on the left.
Actual politics is not a polite debating club.
I just don't understand why we can't acknowledge that Hamas exists. They have agency. They have short term & long term goals. You can hate everything the Israeli gov't has ever done & completely oppose the Israeli gov't's response to 10/7 & still recognize that Hamas exists.

Baddiel worked out a way for angry, red-faced British columnists to declare that lefty students and Muslims are ‘the REAL racists’ and they latched onto it.

Well there’s a reason some people just call the landmass Eurasia instead of acting like there’s some kind of hard, obvious natural border between Asia and Europe.
