Details of House-proposed cuts for 2024 fiscal yr:
NIH 6.2% ⬇️
Including:
NIGMS 2.6% ⬇️
NCI 2.9% ⬇️
NIAID 22.9% !!⬇️
Worried? Call/email your House rep to let them know! The Senate budget included 2.4% ⬆️ for NIH, far preferable.
@Jie_Immunology
It's so sad. NIAID was specifically targeted for extra cuts in the version of the federal budget put forward by the House (specifically by the few far right Republicans in control there). Support for NIH funding has been bipartisan for many years until now.
Delighted to announce that our proposal for the inaugural GRC in
#Immunoengineering
was approved today! Watch for it in summer 2022.
The goal is to be an inspirational home for engineers, physical scientists, and immunologists. Academic and industry. All mixed together!

If I ran a university that wanted both to be preeminent in research and to expand its sponsored research portfolio... I would not chronically under staff the office of sponsored programs. 🤔
Please enjoy our latest paper, now officially online in Organs-on-a-Chip. Photopattern 3D cultures on chip! Recent PhD grad Jennifer Ortiz Cárdenas developed this system from scratch, and it is the foundation for our lymph node chip (coming soon).
Thankful and happy to share this news of promotion and tenure

Is there a course or workshop that anyone recommends to teach science trainees graphic design? Even basics like "align the panels," "use consistent font size everywhere," and "make fonts legible."
Students helping make figures for a grant proposal is a crash course in graphic design. Hopefully they realize how much they are learning when I ask for tweak after tweak...

Found my official letter from the Board of Visitors today. Does one wait until the official effective date to change your email and letterhead title to Associate Professor? Or is it okay to do it now.🥳
I just learned that the danger of clearly explaining the rationale in a manuscript is that reviewers may call the innovation "trivial and obvious." 🙁
I think sometimes we scientists forget:
Simple, robust, & new = elegant. Not obvious.

The shortage of face masks is so severe that the CDC is now advising nurses and other health care providers that they can "use homemade masks" like a "bandana" or "scarf" "as a last resort" -- even though it admits the effectiveness "is unknown."

Mighty Microfluidics: Pompano Builds New Lymph Node Models
We're analyzing and building, not growing, but that's a subtle difference perhaps.😄 Enjoy!
R01 due Monday morning to grants office, and I just finished it! Considering that spouse's COVID is lingering (day 11, 😢😷) and I did school pickup for a week plus two days of schools being closed, this feels like it is ahead of schedule.🎉
Dr. Ozulumba is popular at her poster! Improving cell viability and spreading in photo crosslinked hydrogels by tuning porosity and ROS production. And she's on the job market this year! Make sure to meet her if you are at
#BMES2023
.
In some good news, we had a paper accepted yesterday! It's been a slow year for papers, so it feels extra nice to have one piece of work done and out in the world soon.
Postdoc position open now! Are you:
1. A microfluidics expert?
2. Interested in
#OrgansOnChip
or
#ImmunoEngineering
?
3. Motivated, creative, enjoy a collegial environment?
Apply today to join our team at UVA. Please RT.
Woohoo, new grant funded. Excited to be starting a new collaboration with
@cbhighley
and
@Tochie_O
to model stromal networks in the lymph node. Many thanks to the UVA Center for Advanced Biomanufacturing for supporting us with seed funding!
Interested in spatially organized 3D cultures? organs-on-chip? Read our new pre-print, describing a cool approach to generate micropatterned 3D cultures *inside* a microfluidic chip. Feedback welcome.

I've been reading up on
#DEI
statements in faculty job apps, and finding arguments for and against. What I cannot find is data on the extent to which requiring them actually helps achieve any DEI goals. Does anyone know of such data, or have informal experience on that point?
I am so thankful to my group right now because many of them are logged into our R01 research proposal doc, and editing and cutting and refining ideas, while I handle the various accessory docs. With the deadline close, its great to have such collaboration!
#teamwork
Please RT: We are recruiting! If you are interested in multi-organ

, vaccination, or brain immunity, and want to join a collegial and supportive lab, then we can't wait to read your application!
The people in my group are just so sweet and thoughtful. Check out what they left on our doorstep during our COVID isolation. The warm fuzzy feeling is just what we needed this morning.🥰
In the early stages of writing two new grant proposals ... I love this stage. Brainstorming with colleagues, framing exciting new projects, finding and reading literature that I missed before, finding the big gaps in the field. This is such a rewarding part of being a professor.
One thing I love about writing grants is that it is one of the only times when I can prioritize a deep dive into the literature and actually reading papers. Weird how as a PI, I have so little time to read papers otherwise...
On our way to pick up the lab's first tonsil sample! So exciting! Pioneering students Parris Anbaei and Sahana Sankaran leading the way.

Students helping make figures for a grant proposal is a crash course in graphic design. Hopefully they realize how much they are learning when I ask for tweak after tweak...
My suggestion for universities is to provide a financial consultant who PIs can go to for advice on questions like: Can I afford to hire a tech/postdoc/senior scientist right now? How long can I guarantee their salary with current or pending grant support?

The Pompano Lab had a wonderful time at
#BMES2023
! It was my first visit to BMES since 2018, and it was great to reconnect. Plus all my job-hunting students and postdocs gave great presentations and made new connections. Thanks to the BME community for welcoming us.
Yesterday was my birthday. Quiet day at home, group meeting and remote teaching, skype with family, and a nice dinner that my husband made. I'm thankful that we are all healthy and safe. 💜
Our microscope is working again thanks to the amazing talents of Earl Ashcraft, the Instrument guru for Chemistry! He took it apart and replaced a burned out electrical part for <$40, versus >$2200 to have the manufacturer come out and fix it.
@ChemistryUVA
is lucky to have him.

for applying to TT Asst Prof positions in STEM: This one is logistical. I have served on several hiring committees, and we see a surprising number of apps missing required components. So, re-read each ad before submission, and attach all required docs.

Can we start a movement where faculty push their department to remove the "Rate the candidate on these 10 - 20 traits" part of PhD rec letter submissions?
So time consuming, yet so meaningless. There is no way those ratings are comparable across letter writers, nor unbiased.

If the university could invest in more admin support for faculty, we would achieve far more in research and education. These would likely pay for themselves in overhead and positive press.
Ex: NIH training grants, large center grants, outreach activities.
#Shutdown
is terrible for scientific progress. Review and funding delays = potential loss of jobs, wasted experiments due to funding gaps. CALL YOUR HOUSE REP'S OFFICE ASAP AND LET THEM KNOW.
My house rep says "only 1 constituent expressed concern". Pretty sure that was me.
The last time the government shut down, I had a grant in review.
Study Section was canceled and the entire grant had to be resubmitted, delaying the whole grant and endangering people’s employment and scientific progress.
