I spent most of last year relearning 3D from the ground up so I could model more efficiently.
One early project I didn't finish was an HD version of Zero. Here's how far I got:
At the time the only Sonic-themed map was an old CSS map and SFM was starting to get big for making Sonic animations. I thought it would be cool to make a variable set for those scenarios with what little experience I had at the time.
I also thought people might use the map for other styles like TF2 or Smash Bros. So rather than lift from Generations, I painted them all from scratch in gimp (normal maps were generated with a plugin).
Here's some uncompressed textures and the single bit of concept art.
Going to try to get some showcases made today of my new SRB2 models.
In the meantime, you can check out my thread on the SRB2 MB:
Got some new stuff on there I haven't shown anywhere else yet.
Some earlier tests of certain assets before I redid them for the released map. The palm tree asset was my favorite since it was the most "faithful" but it didn't match the rest of the map's style so I changed it.
Always wanted to go back and make a more faithful Sonic map...
So, the nighttime skybox is a bit special to me. I grew up in Vegas, so I rarely got to see stars. A handful of times when I was older we went out to the middle of nowhere and I saw our Galaxy for the first time.
I wanted the skybox to be as bright and vibrant as that felt.
As old and jank as this map is, it really was an important milestone in my career and my life. I'm glad I was able to make something that people got to enjoy. Thank you to those of you who enjoyed the map back in the day and those who continue to engage with my work today.
Did you know that while I was making the assets for this map I initially made a Vs Saxton Hale map for TF2? I never released it publicly though as it tested poorly.
Going to conclude this thread now so I don't clog up my media tab too much. Thank you for reading. Here are some more production shots to end things off.
I'm going to upload those little rotation/showcase videos semi-regularly on this account, alongside general pack updates.
Speaking of updates; I recently completed the last enemy model, which makes all 40+ enemy models done!
@PhrogPhrogyes
Thank you for seeking me out!
Stuff like this *does* bother me a bit, but I'm usually quiet about it. But I have to admit the "I forgot how to animation" bit (which for me has been a lifelong passion) gave me a chuckle haha.
@Doc_Animator_N
I did this in Clip Studio, but I just used a pencil brush and a circle guide. Could theoretically all be done the same way with a real pencil and real circle guide.
So I know a *lot* of you followed me for the Sonic animation I did last week and there will be more in the future.
However, most of my future 2D animation won't be on ones like that since it has the potential to be distracting, based on my research and personal feedback I got.
I wanted to try a Sonic as if he was from an 1800s childrens book (even though the shoes are from the 1940s).
I kind of want to try reinterpreting some Sonic environments in this style too, but lmk what you think.
Something that helped me in digital art like this is embracing aliased vector lines and binary masks. Coloring is a lot faster like this not dealing with anti-aliasing.

Fun Fact! SRB2 models are mirrored for some reason. This means I have to build my models reversed so they'll look correct in the game.
For this render, I had to flip the model again, so that *important details* lined up again in Blender.
I enjoy animating on ones and it's a great way to find my strengths and weaknesses as an animator, but animating like that all the time is a little excessive.
But, for those of you who want more of *that* anyway, don't worry, there will still be the occasional treat too!
oh yeah here's a couple other tests I did. I couldn't decide if his scanning eye should be pentagonal or round.
It was likely intended to be round since that fits the E-series shape language, but it was fun to try to figure out the shapes anyway.
Came up with the design in 2017-2018 I believe. Felt like redrawing it with some tweaks.
It was just supposed to be a sketch but I wanted to see it in color.
I had a series of sketches that got some interesting reactions in this experiment. I decided to color this version last night since it seemed to resonate the most.
I wasn't originally planning on posting the sketches, they were just a throwaway thing I did partially as a gag, but things felt a bit different recently.
