Westminster today, around 1.30pm. Simply incredible numbers on bikes, more than Iโ€™ve ever seen in rush hour, and from all ages and backgrounds. If this is the new normal, we could have cleaner air, safer streets, a healthier population. A silver lining perhaps...

The real madness of all this: People who cycle daily through freezing cold and rain to work, producing zero carbon emissions while reducing their long-term burden on the NHS, should honestly be given ยฃ1000 and a medal. They should not be charged and regulated for the privilege.

Last night on the East-West Cycle Superhighway. Circa 100 people sat ahead of me at the lights: Women, men, uprights, racers, lycra, jeans, helmets, no helmets. If you build it they will come. For the love of God keep building.

Starting to commute again reminds me that cycling really is the ultimate life hack. Any individual journey by bike is completely free, has zero carbon footprint and you get fitter (and usually happier) while you do it. We should be paying people to ride bikes to work.

Completely. I drive in constant fear that a bike will turn left across me - crushing me inside my car. On A-roads I worry that a 60mph inattentive cyclist will flatten me from behind. Or a careless lane-changing bike could flip my car at any momentโ€ฆ

Two motorbikes being driven along in central London. One without a licence plate, insurance, a helmet or a valid licence - masquerading (poorly) as a bicycle. On virtually every stretch of road, every day. Why is there absolutely no enforcement of the most basic road laws?

Cyclists and joggers in parks and commons last week did not cause 881 deaths yesterday. In the UK 41% of 40-60 year olds do not walk 10-minutes in a *month*. Obesity puts many brits at greater risk from Covid. Let's encourage more people to exercise, not demonise those that do.

The government is proposing a 14-year max sentence for dangerous cycling. Adil Iqbal was driving 123mph and filming himself when he killed a pregnant woman. He was jailed for only 12 years. How could anything you could do on a bicycle be considered more dangerous than that?

I may be deluded, but during a long walk today I became convinced of the following: If the UK was filled with cycle paths, we had a culture of cycling for transport and people spent less time in vehicle traffic, I'm really certain we'd live in a less angry and kinder society.

Proposed death by dangerous cycling offence to carry 14-year max sentence. No motorist in the UK has ever been sentenced to 14 yrs for dangerous driving. Including a drink-driver who killed 3 children when doing 70 in a 30. Ridiculous false equivalence.

@davidallengreen Kafka would probably have had Brexit placed as the end of a very long tunnel that gets narrower and narrower, with the protagonist becoming more and more anxious. Reaching the end, he's killed by a guard, realising at the last minute that he need only have turned the other way.

@ellebrigitte Iโ€™ve always been fascinated by the fluidity of the Simpsonsโ€™ social class. One episode they'd have serious money concerns/ children taken by social services. In another they'd seem socially aspirational middle class, eg joining the country club. Clever way of broadening appeal.

Bizarre that in Farageโ€™s anti-cycling Telegraph tirade he claims a looming recession means we canโ€™t afford โ€˜greenโ€™ cycling projects. The 2008 Recession led to unprecedented increases in cycling. In tough times, itโ€™s the luxury of driving that normal people canโ€™t afford.

Do cyclists pay too much for high end bikes? On the left, entry-level Trek Domane SLR (very good bike) costs ยฃ5400, on the right a Suzuki SV650 costs ยฃ5999 At a similar price the Suzuki has: Integrated LED lights, mudguards ABS dual rotor disc brake 125m shock An engineโ€ฆ

I wonder how many Brits could have been spared horrific terminal illness if the UK took active travel seriously. If cycling/ walking was the norm for journeys under 1 mile, just imagine how much fitter our population would be. Imagine how much healthier our air would be.

Last night this car was used as a weapon, hospitalising four people and inflicting destructive damage to a building. The fact that people talk about cyclists needing the same regulation and licensing as cars is mad. A car can be a destructive weapon. A bike is just a bike.

Sir Wiggo on missing out on the Olympic rowing squad: 'You wonโ€™t see a rower with a sleeve tattoo. Youโ€™ve got to have been to the right schools. I donโ€™t have a silver spoon up my arse.' Utter. crap. A 2k test doesn't ask what school you went to.

Box Hill doesn't need to be closed to cyclists. The policy of closing public spaces because they're being over-used just shifts the demand elsewhere. It's also disappointing that this has followed deceptive telephoto photography in the media.

@BenjySarlin Hearing from friends in Italy and Spain, it was much the same until in a 24-hour window hundreds were dying and public services were immediately overwhelmed. Ideology will crash with reality pretty soon, and I expect those most relaxed now will be the most panicked when it does.

This driver has been proven unable to use the road safely, yet on a bike I still have to share the same space with zero protection. We wouldnโ€™t let medical staff who have repeatedly proven dangerously negligent continue to work with vulnerable patients. Why is this different?

Slipped off my bike on the ride to work today, in one of those rare fusions of extremely slow speed, surprisingly high pain and abundant embarrassment. Immediately afterwards a very nice lady passing by wandered over and offered to give me a hug. That made my day.

Iโ€™m conflicted about wearing headphones while cycling. For a decade I havenโ€™t worn headphones because of safety concerns. But listened to a podcast this morning on a Santander bike and felt I could hear enough. Is there a safety issue, or is that all just victim blaming drivel?

Nothing makes me angrier than right-wing politicians promoting license plates for cyclists. If you're a small-state, anti-bureaucracy politician advocating specific government sanction to simply ride a bicycle, then you have no principles at all.
