@eyeamwema @AyoCaesar It's a trap. They know he won't say "genocide" because of his position and because that label is incredibly contentious and as yet unproven, but they continually push him toward saying to make him look uncaring/"not on the right side". He's obviously trying to help.

People often (rightly) claim introducing new progressive taxes won't raise the funds needed But in this case, the amount is relatively low (£20m). Given we have no higher band, no CGT, no inheritance tax, couldn't we have levied a tax that wont send people to the food bank?

The argument against introducing CGT, reviewing the cap or introducing inheritance tax is that it wouldn't be effective But raising income tax by 2% for just £20m is deemed effective? 🤔 Not saying we need more taxes. Maybe the CS is bloated - I dunno. It just seems...odd

It's true that we pay less tax than some of our European neighbours. But we also lack any of the usual mechanisms for targeting wealth/high incomes. Increasing taxes without addressing that would disproportionately hurt working people.

Whatever influence Tynwald has internationally (which is largely confined to the UK), is best applied by moving before or anticipating Westminster in some way (see assisted dying mention in WM recently). Going late and saying the same is fine but has minimal impact

@GClueit It's language games and domestic politics. Cameron supports a "ceasefire" if and only if it is "sustainable". I can't think of a single person who would disagree with that statement. As of yet, there's no shift in the position - only rhetoric. Which is still significant.

Interesting state of affairs re. British recognition of the Armenian genocide. Interesting because it represents a major break between the devolved nations and Westminster. Interesting too because the IoM arguably has more independence than either.
