A platformer fan's paradise that turns parry haters into experts and proves Metroidvanias don't have to be about getting lost. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is 2024's first must-play game.
Stray moved me as a cat lover who relishes the opportunity to explore and tinker within detailed environments. It's the ultimate cat simulation with a delightful adventure wrapping. Our review:
"Wordle didn’t start from a place of goal setting; it started from curiosity & continues out of love. It was never meant to [add to my life] but when you’re genuinely into something good things come from it."

Some progression choices are forgiving but the path to improving foundational skills is steep enough that I probably won't continue despite some fantastic design. First impressions from 6 hours with Sifu:
Take aways from

hands-on/interview:
- it’s Mega Man like in the sense that you choose boss order (which = diff abilities)
- diff guns = diff dialogue options
- boss battle isn’t as chatty as it showed
- joke wise it’s a return to Rick & Morty season 1 & 2
From this post alone we are close to surpassing ALL of last month’s views. Holy cow. 🐮 Thank you for reading and please check it out if you haven’t already.
Tchia's soul jumping mechanic is compelling and just pure fun. While movement could be a bit more refined Tchia left me feeling calm, happy, curious and compelled to be a completionist. Our preview:

Tunic takes the “playground guide help discussions” cliche and turns it into a charming mechanic rife with mysteries that serve as its own story. The combat gets in its own way but it takes a back seat to something pretty special.

Nobody Saves the World is a fantastical take on the action RPG genre that turns a traditional grind into a series of challenges where the ultimate reward is finding a new favorite way to play. Our review:
We'll have more announcements to come but in 2024 we're going to start commissioning work from writers! At this exact moment pieces are funded out of pocket so don't expect a flooded blogroll just yet. But rn here's the plan (thread)
After 4 hours of Far Cry 6, I feel more confident that this will bring fun moment-to-moment gameplay but still a bit wary of the overall story it’s looking to tell.

Tchia is a good game that’s easy to love but after some initial novelties wear off it’s clear that Tchia is more about relishing in simple pleasures than being intrigued by the core questline.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hopes is another approachable, well-designed turn-based tactics game that oozes charm but it has some performance and quality of life issues. Our review in progress:
The Playdate is a well-constructed device oozing with charm and its library has plenty to love. But at times its unique crank can create more ergonomic issues than its worth and the backlight is sorely missed. Our review:

Crit-Rate is a game review platform with a personalized twist. It sorts you into a gamer house and then gives game recs/has you review games to see which ones your house loves, likes, or skips.
It debuted at PAX East 2023 & is off to a promising start:
This is our first video review of the year. Go watch it and also SUBSCRIBE because we need 1,000 subs (and 4,000 watch hours in the last year) to monetize.
This is the first review published in the new CMS and with the new layout. Give it a look!

Going hands-on with High on Life gave me a more positive outlook but hasn't won me over. Still, my convo with Justin Roiland & Mikey Spano left me intrigued by the narrative & ways the game evokes Metroid, Mega Man, & (perhaps most surprisingly) Uncharted.
Once we get a budget it’s ***over for you hoes.

Just Dance remains a fun formula but, at this point, it feels like we are paying for new songs rather than new ideas. Our first impressions of

The Artful Escape is visually stunning, surprising, and downright delightful. But, with a few exceptions, it's more fun to look at than it is to play.

There is very little repeated dialogue in terms of barks, according to the team. They also said the instructional chatter will die down after that opening area but basically your gun is your companion so expect chatter akin to Nathan Drake & Sully. I only did the opening tho.
Pacific Drive seems incredibly unique but so specific it risks losing more widespread appeal. Ultimately I left less intrigued than when I entered.
Our hands-off preview:
Pizza Possum is a hide-and-treat game where you're just a possum looking to eat and avoid the cops. Lovely premise, solid gameplay, but ultimately it's just not that compelling based on this brief

Button City is an adorable & charming story with a heartfelt message & some genuine moments of amusement. Though it can get bogged down by its slow movement, & occasionally annoying quest structure.

Taking pictures of dogs in goofy scenarios and cute costumes feels like a formula for success but Pupperazzi’s awkward controls and frustrating design choices hold it back despite how cute dogs are in raincoats. Our review:

Fabledom makes building easy and adds some fun fairytale magic to the formula. It's coming out soon so keep an eye out for this one. Also the devs took inspiration from Shrek.
Anyway hopefully this makes sense, I am tired and didn't plan any of this out I was just like YO WHAT IF WE DID IT RN.
I want to get better at planning but I'm also a big fan of Just Do It! (s/o to Nike I guess) - J
My ethos is I'd rather us take forever to raise say $300 and only get 1-2 pieces out of it than raise $300 and use it to pay for 30 pieces at $10 a pop. Fuck that unethical ass pay and hopefully our readers feel the same way and thus are cool with their dollars not "going as far"

My dream isn't for a fulltime staff at the site (at least its not the dream today). My dream is to be a place where a writer can do a review, for decent pay, and continue to freelance/pitch at big places. I want to be a nice stepping stone instead of a scummy stepping stone ✨
Toodee and Topdee offers a refreshing take on the puzzle platformer genre that delights in its clever level design. However, it’s held back a bit by its weak story and overly complex enemy encounters.
