Hurricane Florence : a lesson in never assuming anything.
Full archive of the NHC 5 day cone. This was a “guaranteed fish storm” aka out to sea track.
Until it actually goes OTS, we watch them all.

Never say never, especially when talking tropics.

What seemed like a harmless storm going out to sea may end up as the first landfalling hurricane in the Northeast in 30 years…
“My stomach is in knots”
“I have a bad feeling”
“I’m uneasy”
No, it isn’t.
No, you don’t.
No, you aren’t.
Odds are you’re hundred of miles away ogling wx models
I’d wager >90% of people that say this actually want these severe events to go wild…it’s a bit disturbing tbh.

I’m sorry for the late update. It was hectic since 4 yesterday.
Wife and son are both healthy, pushed for 4 hours before they decided on C section
He is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
Skies reminiscent of the sunset Dorian put on in Florence, this was on 52 in Florence, SC tonight.
Clouds from

The forecasts for Hurricane Florence were never too far off of from what happened, but watching the forecast track change over time is still pretty wild. It is evident when models started showing the bend towards the US
The buildup to landfall for this storm was quite stressful.
Nice Shelf cloud on the leading edge of severe thunderstorms in Florence, SC this evening.
Location: exit 157 on I-95
First shelf cloud of the summer for me, and the iPhone did its best here, but the true contrast on this storm was gnarly.

“Snowrise” -Blue Ridge Parkway
So with the flizzard this morning in WNC, I had to drive up to the parkway, and boy was it worth it.
A few shots along the way, but my favorite was atop the Rough Ridge Overlook - the 4th photo
That was a cold hike, but worthy!

“The fingers of God”
A few storms popping up this evening right after sunset. Sea breeze maybe? Looked like it on radar.
Managed to snag a few shots on the phone.

On this dreary day in the great Appalachian mountains, the views are still surreal to take in!
The sun is popping out making for some nice views finally. It also makes it harder to take a picture that does the colors justice.

Awesome colors at sunset, sky on fire and beautiful pink hues.
Colors change quickly as the sun lowers, light dancing around the low level clouds

He has red hair like his brother! More later when we can see him.
Keep him in your prayers because he is in the NICU on CPAP. His little lungs are struggling just a bit. He is in the best hands and so is my wife.
Y’all I’m so excited to be a dad. Just got home from the hospital, long story short had to make sure my wife’s water didn’t rupture. All is good and contractions have started but aren’t super close together yet. Wish us luck and prayers are welcome and appreciated! Not long now.
To whoever needs to hear it : never give up hope.
A month ago my wife lost her job, Including insurance for our family.
Not ideal during a pandemic.
She had an interview at 9, called me just now saying she starts her new job tomorrow, with benefits.
I also got a bonus today.
Down here on the battery in Charleston, the Harbor is angry. Going to possibly see a top ten surge event here later this evening.

A little over-performer near Boone. Decided to take Poplar Grove road coming down from the Pkwy.
Snow covers the road entirely in spots.
Right before this Timelapse, a truck slid off the road in a curve. It was teetering on the edge of a 100ft drop. On its side.

So let’s talk about when the sun finally came out, just in time for at least one more magnificent show in 2019!
This was near Scranton, SC.
Full double rainbow at sunset! 🌈🌈
The “lines” are due to these being panoramic mobile shots.

My serenity is easy to find. Give me a field, some clouds and I’m good.
Clouds looked like tiles over the farm this afternoon in Florence county, SC

Still quite a long ways out, but many folks may experience their coldest Christmas in quite some time. Many, as in nation wide.
The day 7-14 timeframe looks quite chilly.
This would be absurd.
If I’m right, we had a pretty rare sight here in Florence, SC.
Looks like lenticular clouds, which are rare on the coastal plain away from any mountains where these are more common.
If I’m wrong, well, they still look cool! Interested to know if so.

Y’all it just hit me...one year ago, TODAY my wife and I were in this very same hospital for the opposite reason.
We had a miscarriage for our first pregnancy and a DNC procedure on 10-17-18.
Now today, 10-17-19 we are in the hospital for the opposite reason. Child birth

Could use your thoughts and prayers. My uncle who is intubated and has covid is not doing well. His levels continue to drop. My aunt also just got admitted with breathing issues
My cousin got a call to come to the hospital because my uncles o2 levels are dropping.
I hate covid.
Conditions are beginning to deteriorate near Keaton Beach as the very dangerous Major Hurricane

I’ll get back to weather soon, slowly adjusting to the next chapter of life.
First day back at work for me today, wife and son at home. Leaving them was very hard, but mother in law was able to be off to help my wife recover this week.
Highlight of the day was coming home.
Too many to choose from for tonight’s amazing sunset. A perfect way to end a storm. Extremely vibrant, a light pillar and some Kelvin-Helmholtz action.
I swear that there is not a better vehicle than the absolute tank of a Mazda that

drives.
Highway 27 is also a complete mess, if you have to drive there, plan to navigate a maze of power lines and trees..

It is eerily calm, like dead calm right now on Keaton Beach. Not a single wave, but it is also low tide currently.
Water has pushed quite far off of the beach. Truly the calm before the storm.,

Didn’t post at the time, Because the area between surfside and garden city was a mad house of cars whipping into every beach access in a dash to find the best view surge from

weathered the storm. News of a house collapse on the west end, can’t verify. Locals said 4 cars were also under water.

It is time, after all these years, Columbia and

will finally get the snow they’ve been waiting on.
Happy for all the snow lovers there who have been missing out on snow for what felt like an eternity.

After all the rain we’ve had, almost forgot how beautiful sunsets could be.
Took a lot of shots on this one, extra ones below.
