I spoke to a young ref today who was close to tears. He told me he was quitting after today, he said the players were amazing, but for 40 mins he felt bullied and intimidated by the adults. This was an U7 game. No where else in society is this acceptable. This has to STOP NOW.

Another grassroots weekend goes by where I have a to deal with a 14 year old female ref on her first day in floods of tears due to the behaviour of adults. Fortunately, and to her credit she dusted herself down and finished the day. I hope she decides to continue reffing.

Spoke to 2 scouts today who said they were disappointed at the standard of coaching in grassroots compared to academies. I said your coaches are paid staff, with top facilities, equipment, time & qualifications and Kev from Asda has a team 1 hour a week and is a level 1 coach

The word "Academy" is being used increasingly in grassroots & causing alot of confusion. Parents paying signing on £, mthly £, £ for academy tracksuits but then ultimately playing in grassroots leagues. To help clear up the confusion Cat 1,2,3 academies don't charge any fees.

It costs £0.00 to ask a grassroots volunteer if they need a hand, to put up a net, to collect in the cones at the end of a session, to collect the subs, taking one small job away helps so much, they’ll most likely say no but the offer will mean the world to them. Just saying..

Disappointing to hear of leagues being criticised for cancelling games based on predicted temps of -5. These temps will freeze the ground and will be like playing on concrete. They’re calling early for welfare reasons and so people can enjoy Xmas activities, not to annoy anyone.

£815 million spent in Jan transfer window. A record amount of money. How much went back to the Grassroots clubs that made these players. I can tell you....£0. If there is so much money, why can't some of it be distributed to Grassroots. I can tell you....GREED! Rant over.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a “grassroots football day”. A day all pro players current and retired go back to their grassroots clubs and leagues, give back to the roots of the game, coaches also could go back to their roots and give CPD to grassroots coaches. Imagine that.

There seems to be a growing trend of moving between grassroots clubs, of constantly looking for the nxt best thing or instant success. Sometimes the next best thing is where you are, if your child's coach is treating them fairly & their happy you've already found the best place

They’re too small and/or not strong enough are the 2 things I hear scouts feeding back on junior players. And yet the biggest game in the world is billed as the Messi v Mbappe match. Who are 5.7” & 5.10” respectively. Message to scouts, maybe they’re not too small!!

Not everyone will agree but… When a child’s team don’t win a match, I don’t always think of it as a negative. As the game ends, they have either won the game or will learn from it, quite often more learning is found in a loss and this learning can never be considered a negative

Coaching a team means so much more to me than what happens on the pitch, as much as I want them to be great players, I equally want them to be great people, coaching the person aswell as the player and seeing both blossom is the greatest reward for a coach IMO.

After mths of coaching my own daughter, today I gave her the player of the week trophy, not because she's my daughter but because she deserved it. When you coach your own child it's easy to avoid giving them too much praise or awards. Don't, they're also members of the team.

Training indoors with my U9s for the winter. Went in tonight and on the pitch next to us was a roller disco Xmas party complete with disco lights. Couldn’t hear myself or the kids. Was furious till we are the children of the night came on then we just all joined in dancing. 😂

Having to remove dog poo off the pitch with a marker cone so we can train was not on my level 1 but I’m an expert if anyone needs a lesson.

I once seen someone use a fluorescent Shinpad as a lino flag as the ref had no flags, what made it funnier was the enthusiasm the lad was running up and down the line and how professional he was raising the Shinpad for in/outs and offsides. Somethings are just proper grassroots.

The kids you coach will go on to be coaches, parents, spouses, employees & leaders. Your time spent with them now is about preparing them for when the game ends.

A child's decision making process, no wonder they get confused when multiple instructions are shouted at them. http://t.co/7PacCFuRwo

Why is it assumed elite sport is more important than grassroots sport? “The foundation of a sport is as important, if not more important than the elite. Without the foundation the house will fall, without the roof the house will still stand.”

Silent Support - Let’s be honest, we all know that this has polarised the grassroots community like no other topic in recent memory. Love it or hate it we all have opinions on it. I discuss my thoughts and opinions in my latest @DailyMirror column ⤵️
