I lost my dad today. He was 92, and died in
@NIHospice
It’s tempting to say that he was beaten by cancer. But, when dad died, so did the cancer. Let’s just call it an honourable draw!!!! As a family, we are indebted to
@NIHospice
but, as President, I am biased!!!!
This is David, my son. He wants to wish you a happy St. Patrick’s Day, wherever you are in the world, at the moment. His dad wishes you the same.... Lá Féile Naomh Phadraig shona dhaoibh go léir...
This is my boy with the wonderful James Martin! Both are members of the same drama group, BABOSH, who meet at the Belvoir Players Theatre, in Belfast. James is a star!! He features - from Los Angeles - on tonight’s
@UTVNews
. Don’t miss it. He could be an Oscar winner.
Look at this!!!!!!!!! Hollywood loves a story with a happy ending!!!!! Last night we got it!!!! That’s the icing on the birthday cake of Oscar winner JAMES MARTIN who’s 31….
This is my dad. He’s 91, and living with cancer. Our wonderful NHS hasn’t given up on him. His family hasn’t given up on him. And, he hasn’t given up either!!! Well done dad!!! Happy Father’s Day...
I will never be too old to search the sky on Christmas Eve… and wonder!!!! My son, David, has the same idea… I wish you what you wish for yourself, this Christmas!!!
This is the photo I tweeted of my dad, earlier this week. He died in the
@NIHospice
on Wednesday morning. I have been so deeply touched by the many messages. I have not been able to reply personally. I am sorry... Sufficient to know that we are all in this together!!!
May we never be too old to search the sky on Christmas Eve… and wonder! David and daddy are looking upwards, again. We wish you what you wish for yourself, this Christmas…
This is deeply, deeply, uncomfortable to listen to!!!! It is also an uncomfortable truth!!!! Just listen to this Irishman tell it like it is, in the world, right now!!!!!

I am the dad of David. He is 27 and has Down’s syndrome. He leads a full life. Everyone deserves the same chance as David. He has changed my life. Thank you

Once again I say... may we never be so grown up, that we don’t look up at she sky on Christmas Eve and wonder... I wish you what you wish for yourself this Yuletide/Nollaig/Christmas/Noel/ Weinachten/et al...
@GDSFoundation
Hi there!!! This is my boy at lunch a couple of weeks ago!!! The bottle of water in the foreground is a social enterprise in Northern Ireland. The bottling plant provides employment for people like David!!!

@socentni
Tonight, I will not be so grown up, that I don’t look to the sky and wonder... From this little boy, and his son, happy Christmas; Nollaig shona; Blythe Yuletide...
@AllisonMorris1
I’ve been following your tweets over the past few days; they reminded of my last year at
@STMARYSCBGS
in 1972. The then principal, Brother O’Neill, told us we were going out into a society which believed we could achieve nothing. Go & prove them wrong! WE DID!!!!
Look at this!!!!!!!!! Hollywood loves a story with a happy ending!!!!! Last night we got it!!!! That’s the icing on the birthday cake of Oscar winner JAMES MARTIN who’s 31….
When I was learning my craft as a journalist, in the 1970s, a senior scribe said that, "An attack on one of us, is an attack on all of us!" It has happened on a number of occasions over the years. And, on this Good Friday, it has happened again...

@DeanesAtQueens
for stocking this product in all your restaurants...
My dad rang that bell, a few weeks ago. The spontaneous applause was deeply touching. Cancer does not respect class nor creed! Dad is 91 and fulfilling his lifelong ambition of growing old disgracefully!!!!
Tonight, I am thinking about a dear friend, Teddy Dixon, here in Belfast. He was a soldier in the 42nd Rainbow Division, which liberated Dacchau Concentration Camp, 75 years ago, tomorrow. We owe Teddy, and his generation a debt which we can never adequately repay! Teddy is 100.
Just about to head to the studio for my last bulletin before Christmas. And, just ahead of tomorrow evening, may we never be too grown-up to search the skies on Christmas Eve... I wish you all that you wish for yourself this coming year!!!!!
Today is
#RemembranceSunday
November 8th, 2020. At the moment, I am remembering another
#RemembranceSunday
which occurred on November 8th. The year was 1987!!! I can never forget that day in Enniskillen...

I’m delighted to do my bit to end the stereotype, and stigma, that people with Down’s syndrome cannot achieve!!!! Well, guess what? People with Down’s have more normalities than abnormalities… and I know! Just ask my son, David.
@DSAInfo
I have been humbled 7 deeply touched, in equal measure, by the many kind comments, following my interviews, marking 50 years in journalism. I have read them all! It is impossible to reply to each one of you, individually. Please accept this tweet as a grateful thanks. THANK YOU!
It is with a heavy heart that I tweet this photograph. We have lost these two brave men, within a few days of each other. That’s Teddy Dixon in the left of the picture; and Bill Eames on the right. These extraordinary gentlemen represent a generation we forget at our peril!!!!
I have just introduced this "star" on tonight's UTV Live. Kate is some lady - definitely, one to watch. As the father of David, who has Down's syndrome, Kate Grant is, not only challenging perception, but turning it on its head!!!! Well done Kate. Watch this - and enjoy...
"People who can’t have a voice, I have a voice for them."
Kate Grant campaigns for inclusion for those with special needs and also has big ambitions for her own career - like modelling with

As the father of David - who has Down's syndrome - I have found that people with Down's bring out the best in all of us!!!! Well done Jay! Well done RH Bell Memorial RBP 267. We have more in common with each other, than we realise...
Big thanks to the R.H. Bell Memorial RBP 267 for raising £400 from their Christmas Carol Service for Down's & Proud. Here is Richard Dunlop handing the cheque over to Jay. Thank you so much for choosing Down's & Proud from us all, we are very grateful 🌟🎉🎊🌟💫

Actually, nobody is beyond redemption. As someone educated in the Catholic system in NI I feel very strongly about educational underachievement in Loyalist working class areas. They have been let down - big time - by their political masters!!!
@PolitlcsUK
It’s called international protocol!!!! On arrival, a visiting Head of State is welcomed by - in this case - the Lord Lieutenant for County Antrim… representing the King!
Seán, go raibh míle maith agat!!! I learnt Gaeilge at school, by rote... It was only when I worked at

in Dublin, in the early eighties, and heard the language being spoken in corridors, that it jumped off the page, and lived for me! The adventure continues to this day!!!
This morning I really feel for those whose Christmas dreams have been shattered. After an awful year, it was all, so many people had to look forward to. I think we know that Christmas is not just a day. It is much more than that!!!!!!!
And, away from the news - April 14th 1912, was a Sunday. That was the night the RMS Titanic hit an iceberg in the N. Atlantic. She foundered, in the early hours of April 15th. I grew up with stories about the Titanic. I can never forget this night...
Thank you to everyone who has been in touch, following my return to

Yesterday, I watched the funeral of my auntie Maureen in the US. She was dad’s only sister, and was 99! I hadn’t realised that she was born in Leeds, not Belfast; nor that she knitted socks for sailors, soldiers & airmen during the Second World War. Thank you auntie Mo!
BTW it wasn’t with a view to being subversive, and bringing down the State… but to finding our place within the State!!! A far sighted speech from a former principal… He knew what he was talking about. Thank you Brother O’Neill. Míle buíochas.
75 years ago today, a young Jim Molyneaux (future leader of the UUP) took part in the liberation of Bergen/Belsen Concentration Camp. Years later, he told me that he witnessed a Priest celebrate Mass in the camp, standing beside another Priest who had died minutes before!!!
Remembering this day 30 years ago 17 January 1992. It was a Friday afternoon, and as word came through about the bomb attack at Teebane cross roads, in Tyrone, a silence descended on the news room...
Poppy season again. My grandmother had 5 uncles who fought in WW1. 4 of whom died. Of course we should remember them, but I won’t be wearing a British blood stained poppy.
This is Andrew Crockart. He died, earlier this week, at the age of 86/87. I first met Andy in 1972, when I was 18, and was dead keen to work in this industry. He was a mentor, a friend, and, a boss. I will miss Andy. He was one of a kind! Thank you, sir; and enjoy that pint!
It has been one of the privileges of my life to have known Billy McConnell. He went to Normandy on D Day, by glider, with the Royal Ulster Rifles. Next week he will rejoin his comrades who never came home, at Ranville

two colleagues; but much more than that... exceptional human beings!!! I have learnt much, from both of you. Thank you for your good humoured company, along the way. I’ll miss you both!
I remember that day so well. The media attention was on the Nun who died!!!! Our news editor reminded us journalists that four people had been murdered that day... He was right!
Remembering our colleagues Jim Hanson, Cyril Willis and David Sterrit, murdered this day in 1990 by land mine on Killyleagh Rd, Armagh. Also murdered in this reckless act was Sister Catherine Dunne. We also think of her family on this day also.

Tis the season for many things. Whether you believe, or not, I hope we can all find a resonance in the beauty of music. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate - and a restful, reflective time for all. A silent night, is something to cherish, in a dangerous world right now!!!

I am sorry to learn of the peaceful passing, in Somme Nursing Home, today, of Colonel (Retired) Robin Charley OBE, late of the Royal Ulster Rifles & a veteran of Palestine, the Korean War & other conflicts.

We must never take our lifeboats for granted!!!!!!! When most of us take to the shore, when the going gets tough, they are the ones who put to sea!!!!! Thank you all...
Northern Ireland's first Education Minister, Lord Londonderry, introduced the 1923 Education Act, in which all schools would be free of religious denominationalism. However, he was thwarted by clerics from both sides & the PM, James Craig, withdrew his support. One wonders...
And that lady’s family are still involved in the running of Blacksod lighthouse, in Co. Mayo!!!! So, now you know… I understand that she is still alive, and living in a nearby nursing home… a real echo of history!!!!
This man is a hero!!! I’ve known Billy, for years. Do read your history!!! I worked with him in a primary school near Ballymena, when he was Road Safety Officer with the RUC. It was the same day as Dunblane school attack...
We said goodbye to Ruthie Kohner, earlier today! Dear Ruthie was born in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. Her mother & father were responsible for the Millisle farm, which provided safety for Jewish children who escaped Nazi persecution. We will never forget her or her family!
God rest all our loved ones who have gone before us.

That had been a ghastly week!!!I had met Gillian Johnston in the chemist shop in Belleek, where she worked. I knew her boss - and the bosses dad. My dear friend, Austin Hunter, was the BBC reporter at the funeral on the Sunday. I remember the total bewilderment of her parents.

My dear friend, Dr. Bill Woods, from Belfast, went to be with his God, earlier today. I made a programme with him in his adopted home of Acre, in Brazil, in 1998. He was an immensely humble servant to everyone who met him. He changed the world for people suffering from leprosy.
The Orange Order mantra for this year’s Twelfth - It’s about the Battle, not the Bottle. But they have their work cut out for them when you read a banner in Sandy Row proclaiming - NO SURRENDER TO THE FIVE DAY BENDER. Ouch!
Michael, a year ago, I lost my dad. We could not have a Requiem Mass; and because of Covid restrictions, we all had to be socially distant!!! It broke my heart that mum was sitting alone in our family Church!!! I had to join her! I did. No cameras. & I lived to tell the tale.
Grief is a terrible thing - and nothing quite prepares you for the crippling realisation that one you love is gone for good. Queen Elizabeth is probably feeling quite alone tonight. I hope the knowledge that she is in the prayers of millions brings her some consolation.
After making a programme on The Somme, I received a phone call from a woman who told me that her grandfather was one of those, whose life was saved by Robert Quigg. Without him, her grandfather would not have survived, and she would not have been born!!! An echo of history.
