I lost my dad today. He was 92, and died in ⁦ @NIHospice ⁩ It’s tempting to say that he was beaten by cancer. But, when dad died, so did the cancer. Let’s just call it an honourable draw!!!! As a family, we are indebted to ⁦ @NIHospice ⁩ but, as President, I am biased!!!!

Tonight, I am thinking about a dear friend, Teddy Dixon, here in Belfast. He was a soldier in the 42nd Rainbow Division, which liberated Dacchau Concentration Camp, 75 years ago, tomorrow. We owe Teddy, and his generation a debt which we can never adequately repay! Teddy is 100.

Seán, go raibh míle maith agat!!! I learnt Gaeilge at school, by rote... It was only when I worked at @rte in Dublin, in the early eighties, and heard the language being spoken in corridors, that it jumped off the page, and lived for me! The adventure continues to this day!!!

Yesterday, I watched the funeral of my auntie Maureen in the US. She was dad’s only sister, and was 99! I hadn’t realised that she was born in Leeds, not Belfast; nor that she knitted socks for sailors, soldiers & airmen during the Second World War. Thank you auntie Mo!

75 years ago today, a young Jim Molyneaux (future leader of the UUP) took part in the liberation of Bergen/Belsen Concentration Camp. Years later, he told me that he witnessed a Priest celebrate Mass in the camp, standing beside another Priest who had died minutes before!!!

This is Andrew Crockart. He died, earlier this week, at the age of 86/87. I first met Andy in 1972, when I was 18, and was dead keen to work in this industry. He was a mentor, a friend, and, a boss. I will miss Andy. He was one of a kind! Thank you, sir; and enjoy that pint!

I remember tonight, 45 years ago #kingsmills the murders of innocent men. As a 22 year old cub reporter for @BBCgmu I was there. The previous night, I had covered the murders of more innocents in the same area; the brothers of @EugeneReavey1 & the O'Dowd family. Dreadful times!!

I am sorry to learn of the peaceful passing, in Somme Nursing Home, today, of Colonel (Retired) Robin Charley OBE, late of the Royal Ulster Rifles & a veteran of Palestine, the Korean War & other conflicts. An amazing man who lived his life well. Duty done, Sir. QS FaB ☘️

We said goodbye to Ruthie Kohner, earlier today! Dear Ruthie was born in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. Her mother & father were responsible for the Millisle farm, which provided safety for Jewish children who escaped Nazi persecution. We will never forget her or her family!

That had been a ghastly week!!!I had met Gillian Johnston in the chemist shop in Belleek, where she worked. I knew her boss - and the bosses dad. My dear friend, Austin Hunter, was the BBC reporter at the funeral on the Sunday. I remember the total bewilderment of her parents.

My dear friend, Dr. Bill Woods, from Belfast, went to be with his God, earlier today. I made a programme with him in his adopted home of Acre, in Brazil, in 1998. He was an immensely humble servant to everyone who met him. He changed the world for people suffering from leprosy.

Michael, a year ago, I lost my dad. We could not have a Requiem Mass; and because of Covid restrictions, we all had to be socially distant!!! It broke my heart that mum was sitting alone in our family Church!!! I had to join her! I did. No cameras. & I lived to tell the tale.

Grief is a terrible thing - and nothing quite prepares you for the crippling realisation that one you love is gone for good. Queen Elizabeth is probably feeling quite alone tonight. I hope the knowledge that she is in the prayers of millions brings her some consolation.

After making a programme on The Somme, I received a phone call from a woman who told me that her grandfather was one of those, whose life was saved by Robert Quigg. Without him, her grandfather would not have survived, and she would not have been born!!! An echo of history.
