I’m a HOD on the top of the payspine. I’m spending 15% of my GROSS salary on utilities. How the heck are other people affording to live. I just don’t get it.
Tough times ahead for sure.
Seriously - how do people afford holidays abroad. Am I missing something? How far in advance are you supposed to book.
It would take us a few years to save up to go anywhere just in europe. And thats before you arrive needing money to spend???
At my new school when you go to print a second window pops up to confirm you wish ti print and confirms the cost. This appears 30s after you hit print.
I without fail forget this window will appear and jog off to the printer (different room) to find no document waiting for me.
Anyone else a little tired of being shown links to possible CPD pages when all you want is your children to stop shouting for five mins?
Just making me feel inept.
My mum needs me to go shopping for her- absolutely fine. But she wants me to face time the entire trip so she can keep an eye out for offers and be “involved” in the shoppping experience. 😩
An incredible dialogue with a student today.
I asked her to sit in a Specific seat
She claimed she was being victimised as no one else had been asked to move
I asked again and she said “I’m like that girl who got shot in the face”
“You mean Malala?”
“Yeah. Just like her”
😶

Which might mean we shop more locally helping the local economy and small businesses? Individual pays more yes but goes to a better place!
Teaching students with no intrinsic motivation is so draining. Do you teach classes differently who are intrinsically motivated compared to those that are not?
This probably makes me sound super grumpy but I really don’t like the idea of just showing students “fun experiments” for the sake of it. All it does is take away from lessons “we’ve seen this before” and undermines the actual science.
In a world where you don’t think the human race can get more stupid, someone mistakes paul Potts for pol pot and the vast majority of people don’t realise and genuinely think he is one of histories most awful people.
So let me get this straight. Exams cancelled a few months ago with a plan to come up with something as an alternative. And their plan is to ask teachers to come up with something?
Guest speaker from a local college Today presenting to all of year 11.
“If you really want to you could study A level physics. I couldn’t imagine anything worse. Think I’d rather be sick”
And we wonder why numbers are low. 🤨😠😡
Utterly fascinating how so many have watched this and been horrified?
Lots of students active, taking part, risking being wrong, talking about the subject, applying understanding to a new situation (and it’s a topic many find hard. ) What’s not to like?
At Soane we use:
🤚🏼‘Heads down, hands open’ to check for understanding
🗣️ ‘Turn & talk’ for rehearsal
🙋🏽♂️ ‘All hands up cold calling’
How do we do this? Find out more at our 🧬Science conference on Mon 22nd Jan. Get tickets here 👇🏼
@bbcbitesize
Really surprised at the criticism levelled at this which has been put together in just three weeks.
Genuinely unfathomable.
Just want to say thanks for all of the hard work.
So schools are closed. But also open. But not sure who for.
Exams are cancelled. In May or June. So they may be postponed.
I feel I nOw have more questions.
@historyguy7292
With No prior warning- “so go back to depts and HOd could you lead on the discussion and work through the agenda that’s been laid out. You’ll know when you open the email. Meeting starts in 5. “
Covalent bonding with year 9 today could’ve gone better. turns out my molecule of hydrogen may have looked like something it shouldn’t and the boys couldn’t contain themselves. Going to have to practice my diagrams.

So disappointing- the belief that the final line of “they should find another job” is a chefs kiss when so many teachers are doing precisely that. We dont have enough teachers, we cant recruit or retain?
So how do you fix this supply and demand issue as a business leader?
@staffdb66
Often they dont have children. Its a raw envy for how “lazy” we are.
Lots of holiday, hate children, high wage, good pension tend to be the main ones- and they always “know a teacher who…”
Walked out the room for five mins. Came back in and the boy is watching solo a Star Wars story. Not such a big deal you might think. We don’t have sky movies. He’s somehow bought nowtv and started watching the film. He’s fifteen months and mashed the buttons to get to here.
As a science teacher I find it really odd that other subjects get very obsessed with ASsessment objectives?
Have I missed something?
Should I be making students learn what AO1, AO2 AO3 are in science ?

seems a waste of time to me????
Just met a former student out shopping. Did a chem degree, went into medicinal chem and is about to finish her phd to become a doctor. Her parting words were. “Sir you were right. “
So after a half term of instruction, modelled answers, choral responses, discussions, practice questions, on asking my year 10 to write about salt we had “it goes on chips”
Back to the drawing board.

God no.
The added work load has been bonkers and we haven’t even dealt with the fallout from the summer yet.
Ofqual should be looking at how to make next summers exam season a success and not repeat the debacles of the last two years.
Teachers, exams officers, schools, and colleges - Tell us what you think of the proposed changes to the assessment of GCSE maths, physics and combined science in 2024.

Massive opportunity!
After 20 years I am moving onto pastures new to join a leadership team.

Get applying!!!
Just wanted to give a shout out to all the introvert teachers whose one positive of lock down is not having to do something incredibly excruciating for prom or other leaving occasion in the name of pupil celebration.
Well you could have the grade from the statistical model, your mock grade, your teacher assessment or do you want to risk it all for what’s in the box?
@ScottPughsley
Sir whats your name?
Mr Caden
No I mean you real name
Mr caden is my real name I’m not batman.
What’s your first name.
Well firstly I’d like you to call me mr caden.
Always said with a smile.
@Samfr
I’d argue the problem is the definition of working class. As a teacher I know I automatically become middle class. My mates a builder. He earns more than me. - he would (and neither would I) claim he was middle class.

There are more stars in the night sky than there are grains of Sand on the beach ( but we can’t see them all). And this is still nowhere near a mole.

Love this- whenever the question of girls in STEM comes up i I do think the question of underrepresentation of boys in the arts needs to be mentioned in the same breath.
Teaching colour yesterday- never known it where the students had the primary colours of paint so ingrained they would refuse to accept the primary light colours.
If antibiotics prevent disease, why are there still diseases?
If shoes protect feet why are there still blisters?
If bannisters help you balance why do people still fall down the stairs?
If food fills you up, why am I still hungry?
If reading makes you clever why do I feel stupid
Chemistry drop down day! Cations completed. Flame tests when smoothly and some lovely micro scale of the ppt reactions. (Now called PowerPoint reactions apparently.
Remembering this morning ing teaching OCR gateway. The coursework was science in the news where students had to analyse an article for its reliability and accuracy. At the time thought it was a big waste of time. Happy to concede how wrong I was.
Due to the complexity of love lessons we have gone down the video route with a google form to check understanding.
Lots of kids doing the google form.
Out of 110 students 6 have watched the video according to youtube.
